Beach Erosion

COLIN NYSSA TYLER

OVERVIEW

Beach Erosion occurs when waves push sand away from

the beach, which makes the coastlines narrower and less
elevated. Sand that is carried by the waves is later
deposited in large hills called sandbars.

CAUSES?

Man-made Sand Liquid

Dams Mines Extraction

Humans have played a MAJOR role in the occurrence of

Beach Erosion. The above reasons have been known to
disturb the natural terrain of beaches by exposing
smaller particles like sand. Thus making beaches more
likely to be lifted by waves.

BUT WHAT IS THE

I M P A C T?

LOSS OF COASTLINE
+
NO HABITAT FOR FISH
+
REMOVAL OF VITAL SOIL NUTRIENTS
+
REDUCTION IN VEGETATION

= reduced biodiversity, meaning the

beach cannot support a vibrant
ecosystem
Effects of Erosion
In NC
The North Carolinian coastline is very
far out because it has the Outerbanks.
This is where most of the trouble is
happening. What is happening is
Hurricanes are deteriorating these
parts, and it destroys all in its path,
specifically the soft grounds

The main place that the erosion is

happening is on the soft coasts and rocky
coasts. Thanks to the erosion here, it causes
many problems.
These problems are; Destruction of habitats,
the destruction of homes, and the movement
of salt water inland to freshwater.

Analysis of beach erosion:

Solutions?

Hard Solution: Seawalls serve as

semi-permanent infrastructure.

Soft Solution: Sandbag (temporary

sea walls) and beach nourishment
(relocating sand from other areas)
are not intended to be long-term
solutions or permanent solutions.

Relocation: Humans move from the

coast and surrender the coast to
the natural processes of both
absolute and relative sea level rise
and erosion.
