Commentary: The mother of fishes is the mystery of fertility; the Guardian

unconditional love which is the ase or spiritual power that guides the
effective development of children. The Spirit of the River is a reference to
the idea of understanding our emotional inner self.

Commentary: in traditional Ifa medicine for both physical and spiritual
well-being is often given to children in their soup. This is typically pepe
soup made from palm oil which can include a wide range of herbal
remedies. Elders of Yemoja are expected to know, make and use the herbal
remedies that are essential to the healthy development of children.
Okéré, ‘mo de o.
Okere comes bringing the fortune of children.
Commentary: Okere from the elision oke rere means the mountain of
fortune. This is a reference to the idea that we our ability to access okere is
supported by the way we were nutured as children.

Okere who secretly buys the magical gourd.
Commentary: in traditional Yoruba families children are protected by
gourds filled with secret ingredients that form a wall of protection around
the child. If we look at the phrase Baroye Okere ayadoo ra we get the
elision baba ro oye oke rere aya doo ra meaning the Spirits of expansion
and protection descend to earth to show us the source of good fortune and
to guide use through taboo.
Yemoja ayádóò rá, Obalufe Ayádòó rà é, Yemojá ayádóò rà é.
The Mother of Fishes secretly buys the magical gourd; the Mother of Fishes
secretly buys the magical gourd.
Commentary: the contents of the magical gourds used to protect children
is a secret because secrecy maintains the effectiveness of the medicine.
Pàròyín o, Pàròyín o. M’Okéré me dé, Omídína. Ase.
She states the riddle, then She solves it, She states the riddle then She
solves it. Okere arrives and puts on a magic performance, great water that
blocks the road. May it be so
Commentary: the riddle referred to here is the question how do I provide
good fortune for my children. The verse is suggesting that negative
emotions block good fortune and that the ase or magical power of Yemoja
the power of the nurturing voice of the mothers is the solution to good
fortune. As children we are who are mothers say we are and this is a huge
sacred responsibility that is honored and protected by the role of Yemoja in
the Yoruba village as the foundation to the idea that it takes a village to
raise a child.

Agbo ato.
Ogun.
