ANIMAL ABUSE

Animal abuse are behaviors that causes unnecessary pain and stress to the animal.

There are two types of animal cruelty: Direct Abuse, which consists of the intentional

lack of providing basic cares, the torture, mutilation, or even the murder of an animal,

and the Indirect Abuse, is when people are witnesses of either abuse or torture of any

creature.

Some people consider only suffering as animal cruelty, while others includes suffering

but caused by other reasons such as meat production, getting skin, scientific

experiments and eggs production.

DIFFERENT WAYS OF ANIMAL ABUSE

Every second, there is an enormous number of animals suffering pain worse

than you could ever imagine at the hand of humans, and here are a few ways of abuse

that animals suffer.

1. For entertainment:

A. Fox hunting: practiced in England. Hunting dogs and horsemen go after and kill

a fox who is escaping from them.

B. Bullfight: most likely to be practiced in Spain and some Hispanic American cities.

It consists on killing this animal by nailing him a stick in the back.

C. Bear harassment: practiced in England, and nowadays in many parts of Pakistan.

It consists on a chained bear, which tusks were destroyed, being attack by four dogs.

D. Cockfighting: steel spurs are added to the cock and they fight each other until one

of them is dead.

E. Dog fights: since they are puppies, they are taught to kill either little dogs or cats,

until the desire of killing is created in them. Even if people use lots of animal races, pit

bulls are the most commonly used dogs in illegal dog fights.

F. “Play the piano”: when the hunting season is over, some hunters get rid of their

dogs by hanging them in a tree.

2. Scientific experiments

Right now, millions of mice, rats, rabbits, primates, cats, dogs, and other animals are

locked inside barren cages in laboratories across the country. All they can do is sit and

wait in fear of the next terrifying and painful procedure that will be performed on them.

A. Monkeys and bunnies are forced to smoke until their death because of lung

cancer

B. People put cosmetics on unprotected bunnies’ eyes until they have ulcers.

And they also try tincture on them.

C. It has been used thousands of chimpanzees in different experiments to find

the cure for AIDS, but now it is known that although AIDS can kill people,it doesn’t

happen the same to this animals.

D. People deprive of food to different kind of animals and they also submit them

to electrical shocks just to test how much they can resist.

3. To try cosmetic and cleaning products

Millions of bunnies, horses, rats, and other little animals are used to try house articles

and cosmetic products.

Procter&Gamble (P&G), Colgate, Revlon, Covergirl, Maybelline, M.A.C., L’OREAL,

etc., are between the cruelest companies that experiment with animals.

In 2013 the European Commission forbade the trade of any cosmetic product (cream,

makeup, soaps, dental hygiene) that has been tested on animals. In Spain it is forbidden

to use apes as test dolls, but Scientifics can use them in case of illness.

In 2013, the main cosmetic company in Japan, “Shiseido”, removed animal testing in

their laboratories.

4. For war purposes

Animals had been used for war purposes. This idea was created by the Russian

physiologist and Nobel Prize winner Ivan Pavlov. This idea consisted of feeding dogs

under a tank and a couple of weeks before they go to the battlefield, people stop feeding

them. So when they came out, they must think the enemy tank has food and once dogs

are under it, people make them explode. These kind of explosive dogs are known as

“Pavlov’s dogs”.

Here we show you some countries and cities that have several penalization for those

who do animal abuse:

 PERU:

This year the Congress of Peru approved a law which maximum punishment is 5 years

in prison. This punishment applies for those who kill either domestic or wild animals.

Also you can spend 2 years in prison for mistreat or forcing them to do activities that

they shouldn’t do.

 NEW YORK:

For cruelty or torture, abuse, killing, or not feeding the animal, the penalty is one

thousand dollars or even one year in prison. When the abuse include sadistic or

depraved practices, the penalty raise up to five thousand dollars or five years in prison.

 ZURICH:

In case of cruelty, the government provides a lawyer who defends the animal that has

been in a situation of cruelty. The cruel and intentional treatment to animals has a

penalty from three years in prison to twenty thousand dollars.

 CAIRO:

Nowadays, kill or hurt an animal is punished with three years of prison, and the law

doesn’t allow economic fine, so the prison is unavoidable.

Recently, in March 2015, the penalty for those who commit acts of cruelty against

animals goes from five to sixty monthly salaries and 12 to 36 months in prison.

EXAMPLES OF ANIMAL ABUSE TO DOMESTIC ANIMALS

 Provide them food that contains substances that can cause them unnecessarily

pain and suffering.

 Beat them brutally just to make psychological damage to someone.

 Leaving the pet outdoors (suffer from cold, sun, and rain).

 Leaving the animal without food and water

 Neglect their health, well-being, or not clean the place where they eat or sleep.

 Abandonment of domestic animals:

In the streets or roads, animals can’t provide themselves things like water, food, shelter,

and be as healthy as an animal that actually has a home. They are exposed to every

type of aggression and violence such as poisoning, to be run over, and death.

The abandonment at global level is worrying. The World Animal Health Organization

said that exist more than 400 million of homeless dogs all around the world.

These are the characteristics that abandoned dogs have:

1. There is more male dogs abandonment

2. Most of them are adults, but people also abandon puppies

3. Most of them are in good health condition.

Reasons why people abandon animals:

1. Lack of interest in the animal

2. Family allergies

3. The birth of a child

4. The animal behaviour

5. Buildings don’t allow animals

6. The owner dies or goes to the hospital

CONSEQUENCES

The hits, physical injuries, shouting and the abandonment are just a few examples of

how damaging and cruel can be the abuse that a pet can ever experiment.

The physical and psychological abuse leave negative effects on dogs. If the animal

suffer from abuse for a long time, their behavior will change in a negative form. If the

dog hadn’t suffered from physical and psychological abuse, now they wouldn’t have

disorder on its behavior, such as distrust on people and other dogs, sadness and

depressive or aggressive behavior.
