Location Recces Area 1
Lighting
The light sources in this particular area is all natural light, in the summer it will be especially
hard to influence the lighting conditions due to the intensity of the sun during these times. The
shadows are thereby influenced by the position of the sun at the time of filming. I have found
that filming in this area at around 9-11am works best in terms of lighting, after scouting the
location prior to planning out my filming schedule. To resolve the issue of the harsh light which
could lead to overexposure, I could either try my best to use colour grading in premiere pro to
offset the amount the lighting will potentially wash out the shot, or I can film later on in the
afternoon when the sun is lower (which is not an option as the college will be closed at such late
hours) - or I could even film in a different season like winter or autumn when it is darker, but as
my deadline is due for the 21st this again is not a suitable alternative.
Sound
During college hours there is the potential to pick up background noise from students socializing
near the canteen or smoking area nearby. There may also be sound from cars driving in and out
of the car park. This can be worked around in a few ways, firstly I can ask students nearby to be
quieter when I am filming, I could also make sure to film during lesson times, to minimize the
amount of students that could potentially be around the shelter to possibly make noise during
my filming. There is most likely going to be natural noises such as birds chirping, which cannot
be helped.
Power
This particular location has no power sources available for charing equipment and such. If
equipment being used requires a power source, I will need to either utilize things such as
portable chargers for charging back up cameras, or using nearby classrooms or cafeteria to
recharge equipment there until it is suitable for use outside again. This is not ideal but it is the
most straightforward route.
Hazards
This particular area has various sharp rocks, trip hazards (like overgrown plants) and rusted
metal debris lying around, all of these can cause a variety of health hazards for us when filming
there, and thus we must take extra caution when navigating this area, cameras should be
secured or in cases when carried around this area to minimize potential damage if they’re
dropped etc. To resolve the issue of tripping hazards, I could try to move away potential threats
that could cause myself or my crew to fall carefully before filming starts.
Sound
Again during college hours there is the potential to pick up background noise from students
socializing near the canteen or smoking area nearby. There may also be sound from cars
driving in and out of the car park. This can be worked around in a few ways, firstly I can ask
students nearby to be quieter when I am filming, I could also make sure to film during lesson
times, to minimize the amount of students that could potentially be around the shelter to
possibly make noise during my filming. However this location is far from the aforementioned
areas and the likelihood of picking up background noise from there is very low, but still a
possibility. The form of noise that will potentially impact filming the most is the natural sounds
such as birds chirping, which cannot be helped.
Hazards
This particular area has rocks scattered about and plant branches leading to possible trip
hazards, which all of these can cause a variety of health hazards for us when filming in this
location, and thus we must be cautious when navigating this area, cameras should be secured
or in cases when carried around this area to minimize potential damage if they’re dropped etc.
To resolve the issue of tripping hazards, I could try to move away potential threats that could
cause myself or my crew to fall carefully before filming starts - I could go along the trail I am
going to take slowly before rolling the camera and surveying the pathway for hazards.
Lighting
The lighting for this particular area is variable, during the day before around 6pm, the area is
predominantly natural lighting - this can only be influenced by the time of day I decide to shoot -
however I am planning to film when it becomes darker and the street lighting comes on, this
means I will have to wait until about 6pm for the lights to turn on. Once the lights are on, when I
am filming, the artificial light could potentially not be enough for the shots I want to use, and they
could appear flat and lifeless, this can be resolved via the use of colour grading and editing
techniques in software such as after effects and premiere pro, which can let me manipulate the
intensity of the shadows and lights cast in my shots to get the desired contrast and effect that I
am looking for.
Sound
The sound of this area will be very loud crowds of people and potential music from shops or
buskers and street performers, this will overpower any sort of sound I am trying to use with the
video, to resolve this I should use premiere pro to remove the audio tracks from the Chinatown
footage so that you can clearly hear the song for the production.
Power
This particular location may have a variety of different areas in which I could charge my
electronics, as certain cafés and restaurants have outlets nearby your tables that you can use to
charge things. This is an issue as it means that I would potentially have to pay so I can sit at a
table in a café or restaurant and use their power outlets. This can be resolved by ensuring my
equipment is fully charged and that I have brought spare batteries and / or my portable charging
equipment.
Hazards
In Chinatown the hazards can vary from the forested areas; as the streets are so busy, I could
potentially knock into pedestrians and damage my filming equipment - to resolve this issue I
should make sure to use the safety straps on my cameras when filming, and get a member of
the crew to potentially ward away people from walking into me when I am trying to capture a
shot. Another Hazard is potential theft of equipment; robbery is fairly common in London and in
a crowded area someone could potentially take my equipment from me and escape into the
busy street. To make sure this doesn’t happen I should make sure I am vigilant and alert when
my equipment and props are on display, as well as ensure I am using the necessary “safety”
straps provided on my equipment to make sure I have a strong grip on everything in case
someone tries to steal it.

Contingency Plan
In a media production, there is always a potential for issues and problems to arise, and because
of this present risk, I will need to make sure I have back-up plans for when/if potential problems
happen. If the weather outside is not suitable for filming, I can perhaps shoot in a different
location such as travel to London if the weather is more suitable in Chinatown for the shots I
want to film, and failing that, I can use the time to properly reschedule my shooting days with my
crew and work on other aspects of my project such as more research. If any of my actors
unexpectedly cannot make it for filming, I have 2 potential back-ups for them, so I am prepared
for potential no-shows. For my props and equipment, if any are to break such as the guitar, I
have back-ups at home that I can use if the situation arises, if a camera is to break I can use
one of the others that we have together as a crew, and failing that I am able to book out
equipment from The Henley College for use on short notice if I cannot find any other
replacements - if the equipment is not available to hire out on the website due to probably high
demand due to the time of year, I will have to shoot on another day. I will need to make sure
both cameras have spare batteries packed when shooting, as well as the necessary tripods for
them.
