Pathways to Architecture
A degree in architecture can offer you the chance to
specialise in a variety of fields with rewarding careers
to match. Below is a list of the different specialisms.
Residential architect
Residential (sometimes called Domestic)
architecture focuses on constructing private
dwellings for homeowners. As a residential
architect, you would be working with private
clients to help them to design their homes.
Commercial or Public Architect
Specialising in larger ventures for businesses
or government entities, erecting public
buildings such as shopping malls, libraries
and government facilities. Generally speaking,
commercial architects tend to focus on
structures other than family residences.
Industrial Architect
Industrial architects will be involved in
the design and construction of buildings
serving industry.

Landscape Architect
The design of outdoor public areas,
landmarks, and structures to achieve
environmental, social-behavioural,
or aesthetic outcomes.
Interior Design
Although interior design is not actually
a type of architecture, it is closely
connected and some building designers
are also interior designers.
Green Design
Green architecture is exactly what it sounds
like - building structures friendly to the
environment. Green buildings are built with
solar panels, underground rooms and other
innovative features that reduce energy
costs and allow for sustainable living.
Becoming an architect
Its worth thinking about the type
of architecture you are interested in.
Regardless of your area of interest,
it can take at least seven years of study
to qualify as an architect in the UK.
The process of becoming an architect is
governed by the Royal Institute of British
Architects (RIBA), who also award the title
of ‘Architect’. In the UK the process is split
into three parts.
Part 1 is a Bachelor’s degree which usually
takes three years of full-time study.
Part 2 of the process enhances your overall
architectural knowledge. Whilst the actual
qualification varies between institutions
(BArch, Diploma, MArch), this stage
generally takes two years of full-time
study to complete.
Part 3 is the final stage of training and
requires students to complete a minimum
of two years in professional training prior
to their final exams. The course is taken
at a RIBA-validated institution and once
this final part has been completed and
students graduate, they can register as an
architect with the Architects Registration
Board (ARB).
It is worth noting that not all universities
that offer architecture will lead to
accreditation with the ARB Accredited
Degrees, so it is worth checking with the
university you are looking to apply to.

Your path to a Career in architecture:
Bellerbys A Level Programme
Top A Level grades are a requirement for all students looking
to study architecture, regardless of the specialism. Our A Level
Programme will provide you with all the in-depth preparation,
support and knowledge you need to get on to the most
demanding and competitive degree courses.
Architecture degree essentials
Different universities have different A Level
requirements and many do not specify any
preferred subjects. However the usual subject
combination is Art, Maths, Physics and one
other. If you choose not to study Art at A Level,
you may find that you have difficulty in
developing your portfolio. It is worth noting
that there is high competition for the best
universities, so choosing the right combination
of A Level subjects will improve your chances.
The following A Levels are often
considered desirable or useful:
⋅ Art and Design - highly desirable
⋅ Mathematics – highly desirable
⋅ Physics - useful
⋅ Geography is also a RIBA recommendation
as environmental awareness becomes
increasingly significant.
Its always best to check with the university
you are looking to apply to and make sure that
you don’t exclude yourself from places where
you would like to study.
A further consideration is that if you don’t study
Maths at A Level, many universities will expect
you to have studied GCSE Maths and achieved
Grade C or above.
It is worth noting that for many universities,
General Studies and Critical Thinking are
excluded as additional subjects.

top universities.
⋅ Interview and Personal Statement:
All universities will require you to provide
a personal statement and attend an

be able to demonstrate a genuine enthusiasm
for your chosen subject and give examples of
your personal development and related
interests to support your application.

command of English. It is also important that
you fully engage in societies, clubs and the

popular degree option and the best
universities can demand top grades, a
minimum of grade A in all subjects. And

Our Art & Design Foundation Programme is an
intensive, 3-term programme which is accredited
by Lancaster University.
Based on the A Level syllabus and taught by
A Level teachers, the Foundation Programme
will suit you if you are seriously considering
a career in architecture. This course offers a
high level of support and guidance alongside
expert teaching.
Once you successfully complete the Foundation
Programme and meet the required standards
you can progress to an undergraduate degree
at one of over 80 UK or Irish universities.
