Note: this lesson plan can be used as a guideline(lecturers are free to modify the activities if necessary)
Chapter 2: Structural Lecture and group activity At the end of the lesson,
Loading Analysis students should be able to:
- load types, load paths, 1) Plan for structural
load combinations, roof Studio activity (A&E): framing including of floor
3-4
truss design load In small groups, discuss on how layout and roof trusses
(10 hours)
to find all permanent and layout
variable loads for roof floor. 2) Differentiate the floor
Students will have to write down usage and finish floor
the permanent and variable level from the
loads based on the roof architectural drawing
materials specified in the 3) Illustrate load path
architectural drawings, and distribution of structure
decide on the load path 4) Analyze loading from
distribution from roof to roof roof trusses and any
beams. After discussion, some other external element
groups will be called to present to be included in design
their findings to the class. of structural elements.
(CO1:PO3)
Activtity (A&E):
In small groups, discuss on how
to find all permanent and
variable loads for first floor and
ground floor structure elements.
Students will have to write down
the permanent and variable
loads for different room usage
and finishes materials specified
in the architectural drawings.
After discussion, some groups
will be called to present their
findings to the class. (CO1:PO3)
Chapter 3: Reinforced Lecture and individual activity At the end of the lesson,
concrete structure design students should be able to:
- design of RC column by Studio activities: 1) Manually design of
manual and computer 1) Each student is asked to reinforced concrete
software choose any critical column column (CO1-PO3)
to be designed. 2) Justify design results
2) Use prior knowledge, draw from software
8
substitution frame for
(5 hours)
further analysis.
3) Students are required to
perform structural analysis
of the frame in order to get
the axial load and bending
moment for the column.
4) Students are required to
come out with classification
of the column.
5) Students are to compare
design results from manual
calculation with software
outputs.
Chapter 3: Reinforced Lecture and group activity At the end of the lesson,
concrete structure design students should be able to:
-design of RC foundation Studio activities: 1) Manually design of
by manual and computer 1) Based on previous frame reinforced concrete
software analysis of column and foundation (CO1-PO3)
beam reactions, students 2) Justify design results
9 should come out with the from software
(5 hours) complete design of pad
footing.
2) Students are to compare
design results from manual
calculation with software
outputs.
Chapter 3: Reinforced Lecture and individual activity At the end of the lesson,
concrete structure design students should be able to
-design of RC staircase Studio Activities: manually design of reinforced
manually 1) Students are required to concrete staircase.
find information regarding (CO1:PO3)
types of staircase and
loadings acting on
10
staircase.
(5 hours)
2) Then, they are required to
identify the type of
staircase based on
architectural drawing
3) Hence, propose the
suitable number of steps (if
not given)
4) A complete loading
analysis of the staircase
should be done together
with complete design and
detailing.
Chapter 4: Steel structure Lecture and studio activity At the end of the lesson,
design students should be able to:
- steel beam design Project 2: Steel structure design a) Sketch out a small
scale steel structure Addressing
Steel structure project: b) Identify loadings for a CO2-PO3
1) In a group, students have selected steel beam
to brainstorm, discuss and c) manually perform PS (TUA)
decide on a small scale design calculations for
11 steel structure (i.e., the selected steel
(5 hours) pedestrian footbridge, beam. (CO2-PO3) *Refer to
elevated water tank etc) appropriate rubrics
which fulfills the following for assessments.
requirements:
a) The structure must fulfill the
requirements of Jabatan
Kerja Raya Malaysia
b) The structure must fulfill the
requirements of local
authorities.
c) The design of the steel
structure must be cost
effective
2) Students to delegate
flexural member,
compressive member,
tension member and simple
connection steel design
tasks among members of
the group.
3) Each student to find the
loadings on a selected steel
beam, and come out with
the SFD and BMD for the
steel beam.
4) Students to propose a
suitable size for the steel
beam and perform design
calculation fo the steel
beam.
14 Chapter 4: Steel structure Lecture and group activity At the end of the lesson,
(5 hours) design students should be able
-steel connection design Studio activities: to manually design for
1) Each student to draw out a simple connection.
selected steel connection (CO2-PO3)
and design the connection.
PO3 – Design solutions for well-defined technical problems and assists with the design of systems, components or processes to meet
specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
PO7 – Understand and evaluate the sustainability and impact of engineering technician work in the solution of well defined
engineering problems in societal and environmental contexts.
PO10 – Communicate effectively on well-defined engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, by
being able to comprehend the work of others, document their own work, and give and receive clear instructions.
For RC building design project, lecturers are free to modify the double storey house to double storey shophouse or any double storey
buildings.
