Teacher: Kylee Harbour Subject: Math Grade Level: 3

Stage 1: Identify Desired Results

Established Goals (SOL or Curriculum Standards)
3.9 The student will estimate and use U.S. Customary and metric units to
a) measure length to the nearest whole centimeter and half inch
b) identify tools used to measure different objects

Enduring Understandings Essential Questions

Students will understand… ● Can the student identify each measurement
● How to properly read and identify type?
measurements using centimeters, ● Does the student know when to properly use
inches, feet, yards, and meters each type of measurement?
● How to identify differences between
each measurement
● How to determine when to use each
type of measurement

Students will be able to… Learning Targets in the “I can” format

● measure distance using inches, feet, yards and meters
● determine when to use each type of measurement appropriately

Stage 2: Determine Evidence for Assessing Learning

Performance Tasks: Summative Assessment (formal Other Evidence: Formative Assessment (informal
assessment to ensure students meet SOL standards) assessment to assess learning)
● worksheet on determining which ● Four Corners with multiple choice questions
types of measurements to use when about determining when to use each
and estimating lengths measurement type
● Worksheet scavenger hunt to practice
measuring

Materials:
1. worksheets attached at the bottom
2. Class sets of yard sticks, meter sticks and
rulers
3. Unsharpened pencil, desk, computer,
door frame, promethean board and carpet
Stage 3: Build Learning Plan
Learning Activities: Step by step activities (Include the amount of time)

● Watch Brain Pop on measurement

https://jr.brainpop.com/math/measurement/inchesandfeet/
● Introduce each type of measuring tool and explain how to read them and give example of
when to use each tool and draw on anchor chart (15 minutes)
● Have students play 4 corners in deciding which type of measuring tool to use (10 minutes)
● Have students do worksheet on deciding which type of tool to use and practicing reading
them (20 minutes)
● Have students do scavenger hunt to practice measuring (15 min) - if time allows

Differentiation/Enrichment Activities
● When students are finished with the worksheets have them partner up and send them on a scavenger hunt to
measure different objects with each type of measurement

Stage 4: Reflection
I wasn’t able to implement my lesson plan because my teacher taught it while I wasn’t in the classroom. But I
got to see some of the worksheets the kids worked on and they were very similar to the ones I created. They
seemed to be grasping the concept of measuring really well. I think measuring comes as second nature to
some of the kids, or they have already been measuring because they seemed to have no trouble. All in all, I
think that if I were to have taught my lesson that it would have gone over very well, but it was really cool to
even just write a lesson plan and learn how to do them.
