Hippies came to be because many of the young
people were dissatisfied with their uneventful

“originally taken from ‘Hipster’, the term ‘hippie’
was used to describe beatniks who found their
technicolor heart in the Haight-Ashbury district
of San Francisco."
Tactics
Hippies of the 1960s had many different ways to
speak their opinions. The main way they express
their opinions is by protesting. One example of a
protest is when they sat on the lawn in front of the
white house.

class families. Their age would usually range
between 15-25 years old. The hippies would have
long hair to go against the men and woman in the
military and modern society to show that they
were going against everything.
What did they want?
Hippies are people who reject mainstream
society. They mainly focused on authenticity,
individualism, and community.
 Important Events
One example of an important event from this time
period is the summer of 1967, also known as the
‘Summer of Love.’ As mentioned on
theculturetrip.com, “it has been referred to as one
of the most widespread social and political
gatherings in recent history.” thus event was so
popular that over 100,000 hippies gathered in San
Fransisco. This summer event was considered the
cultural center of the hippie movement because it
is where free love, drug use, and communal living
became the popular things to do.
Legacy/Impact
As mentioned on brainless.com, “The counter
culture movement reached its heights in 1969,
when young people attended the Woodstock
Music and Art Festival at New York. The festival
became a symbol of anti-war movement.” This is
an example of how the events that were held are
still symbols of defiance and people speaking
their own opinions to this day.
