88 - approach 2: Other means according to 9.11.2.2.

89 Tests according to 9.11.2.1 and 9.11.2.2 do not need to be carried out in obvious situations.
EN 50085-1:2005/prAA:2011 -6-

90 9.11.2.1 Limitation of dimensions of gaps

91 Compliance is checked on assembly or assemblies made of one or more trunking lengths or ducting lengths
92 of (250 ± 5) mm with the relevant system component, if any, to fulfil the various purposes of the system.

93 As a general requirement, the maximum straight length of any gap in the partition shall be less than
94 12,5 mm, unless any gap having a straight length of at least 12,5 mm has a width measured perpendicularly
95 to this length smaller than 2,5 mm.

96 Compliance is checked by using a straight rigid test probe as shown in Figure 10. The probe is applied with a
97 force of (3,0 ± 0,3) N in every possible position, if necessary after cutting the sample apart in areas which do
98 not contribute to separation.

99 NOTE Separation by labyrinth is under consideration.

100 The full cross section of the probe shall not enter from one compartment to a separated compartment.

101 9.11.2.2 Other means

102 The test is carried out on an assembly made of one or more trunking lengths or ducting lengths with the
103 relevant system component, if any, to fulfil the various functions of the system and prepared according to the
104 manufacturer’s instructions. More than one assembly may be necessary to fulfil the various functions of the
105 system. In each direction, the length L of trunking length or ducting length coming out of the functional area
106 associated with the function of the system is 100 mm. The tolerance of L is ± 5 mm. If the manufacturer's
107 instructions require the use of cable retainers, the test is carried out using the cable retainers and if possible
108 symmetrically fixed along the length.

109 NOTE 1 Functional area refers, for example, to a fitting, an apparatus mounting device, a junction as shown in Figure 11.

110 Test on trunking length is made on a length equal to (200 ± 10) mm plus one maximum interval between
111 cable retainers as declared in the manufacturer’s instructions.

112 Test on ducting length is made on a length equal to (700 ± 10) mm.

113 The samples are mounted on a rigid smooth support such as a plywood board 16 mm thick, with a
114 50 mm minimum spacing between the assembly and the edge of the support.

115 Examples for arrangement are shown in Figure 12.

116 The assembly is positioned in the most unfavourable intended installation position according to
117 manufacturer's instructions.

118 NOTE 2 in case of doubt, more than one installation positions can be tested.

119 The tests 9.11.2.2.1, 9.11.2.2.2 and 9.11.2.2.3 are carried out on each pair of compartments declared as
120 separated by the manufacturer.

121 9.11.2.2.1 Test with one insulated conductor in each separated compartment

122 In each separated compartment that is so declared by the manufacturer, a flexible insulated conductor of
2
123 1,5 mm nominal cross section and designated H07V-K according to HD 361 S3 is placed in the most
124 unfavourable position.

125 For each insulated conductor, the length coming out of the assembly is at least 200 mm at both extremities.

126 The insulated conductor of each separated compartment is submitted to a push or a pull action
127 approximately simultaneously simulating the worst case.
-7- EN 50085-1:2005/prAA:2011

128 NOTE In case of doubt, more than one case is tested.

129 A pull action consists in fixing one extremity and pulling the other extremity of the insulated conductor
130 approximately in the direction of the trunking length or ducting length. The pull force is (22,5 ± 1,0) N.

131 A push action consists in pushing both extremities of the insulated conductor approximately in the direction
132 of the trunking length or ducting length. All reasonable effort is made to reach at each extremity a
133 displacement of approximately 50 mm in the direction of the trunking length or ducting length.

134 During the test, there shall be no physical contact between insulated conductors of separated compartments.

135 A possible physical contact is visually detected, if necessary after

136 - cutting the sample in any area which does not influence the separation, and/or
137 - removing any part which does not influence the separation, and/or
138 - replacing any part with a transparent part of same or similar shape.

139 9.11.2.2.2 Test with one full compartment and a separated compartment containing one insulated
140 conductor

2
141 One separated compartment of the sample is filled with flexible insulated conductors of 1,5 mm nominal
142 cross section and designated H07V-K according to HD 361 S3. The number of insulated conductors is equal
143 to the declared cross sectional area for cables in mm² divided by 17 mm² and rounded to the lower integer.

144 A flexible insulated conductor of the same type is placed in the other separated compartment, in the most
145 unfavourable position.

146 For each insulated conductor, the length coming out of the assembly is at least 200 mm at both extremities.

147 One insulated conductor of each separated compartment is submitted to a push or a pull action
148 approximately simultaneously simulating the worst case.

149 NOTE In case of doubt, more than one case is tested.

150 A pull action consists in fixing one extremity and pulling the other extremity of the insulated conductor
151 approximately in the direction of the trunking length or ducting length. The pull force is (22,5 ± 1,0) N.

152 A push action consists in pushing both extremities of the insulated conductor approximately in the direction
153 of the trunking length or ducting length. All reasonable effort is made to reach at each extremity a
154 displacement of approximately 50 mm in the direction of the trunking length or ducting length.

155 During the test, there shall be no physical contact between insulated conductors of separated compartments.

156 A possible physical contact is visually detected, if necessary after

157 - cutting the sample in any area which does not influence the separation, and/or
158 - removing any part which does not influence the separation, and/or
159 - replacing any part with a transparent part of same or similar shape.

160 9.11.2.2.3 Test with two separated full compartments

2
161 Each separated compartment of the sample is filled with flexible insulated conductors of 1,5 mm nominal
162 cross section and designated H07V-K according to HD 361 S3. The number of insulated conductors is equal
163 to the declared cross sectional area for cables in mm² divided by 17 mm² and rounded to the lower integer.

164 For each insulated conductor, the length coming out of the assembly is at least 200 mm at both extremities.
EN 50085-1:2005/prAA:2011 -8-

165 One insulated conductor of each separated compartment is submitted to a push or a pull action
166 approximately simultaneously simulating the worst case.

167 NOTE In case of doubt, more than one case is tested.

168 A pull action consists in fixing one extremity and pulling the other extremity of the insulated conductor
169 approximately in the direction of the trunking length or ducting length. The pull force is (22,5 ± 1,0) N.

170 A push action consists in pushing both extremities of the insulated conductor approximately in the direction
171 of the trunking length or ducting length. All reasonable effort is made to reach at each extremity a
172 displacement of approximately 50 mm in the direction of the trunking length or ducting length.

173 During the test, there shall be no physical contact between insulated conductors of separated compartments.

174 A possible physical contact is visually detected, if necessary after

175 - cutting the sample in any area which does not influence the separation, and/or
176 - removing any part which does not influence the separation, and/or
177 - replacing any part with a transparent part of same or similar shape.

178 9.11.3 Parts providing electrically protective separation by electrically protective screening shall be
179 provided with means for earthing and have adequate electrical continuity.

180 Compliance is checked by the test of 11.1.

181 9.11.4 Parts providing electrically protective separation by supplementary insulation shall have adequate

197 10.6 System access cover retention

198 Access cover of system components of systems classified according to 6.9.2 shall not be capable of being
199 opened without a tool.

200 Compliance is checked by the following test.

201 Before the test non metallic system components and composite components are aged at a temperature
202 declared according to Table 3 with a tolerance of ± 2 °C for (168 ± 4) h continuously.

203 The test is carried out on an assembly made of one or more trunking lengths or ducting lengths with the
204 relevant system component, if any, to fulfil the various functions of the system and prepared according to the
205 manufacturer’s instructions. More than one assembly may be necessary to fulfil the various functions of the
206 system. In each direction, the length L of trunking length or ducting length coming out of the functional area
207 associated with the function of the system is as long as the width W of the trunking length or ducting length,
208 or 250 mm, whichever is the greater. The tolerance of L is ± 25 mm.

209 NOTE 1 Functional area refers, for example, to a fitting, an apparatus mounting device, a junction as shown in Figure 11.

210 The samples are mounted on a rigid smooth support such as a plywood board 16 mm thick, with a
211 50 mm minimum spacing between the assembly and the edge of the support.

212 NOTE 2 Other system components may be included, if necessary, to prevent movements. These system components are the system
213 components to terminate the trunking length or ducting length, if any. When there is no such system component, a system component
214 chosen by the manufacturer is used.

215 Examples for arrangement are shown in Figure 12.

216 Without the use of a tool, reasonable manual effort is made to open the access cover. Reasonable effort is
217 intended to simulate action and instinctive handling likely to occur.

218 After the test, the access cover shall remain secured.

219 14.1 Degree of protection provided by enclosure

220 Add “with a tolerance of ± 2 °C” after “at the maximum application temperature as declared by the
