TITLE: WOMEN AND IGNORANCE-

AN ANALYSIS OF WOMEN TEA WORKERS

(A case study based on Ducklingia Tea Garden, Jorhat District, Assam)

ABSTRACT: This paper examines the conditions of women in the

tea gardens of Assam. Tea is the chief cultivation of Assam.
Improvement of the conditions of women tea workers will lead to
overall development of the condition of women in the area. The
objectives of this paper is to find out the level of enjoyment of
workers rights by the women workers. Workers rights are relatively a
new addition to the modern concept of human rights. The
International Labour Organisation was formed to protect workers
right. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, The French
Declaration of the Rights of Man, The Constitution of India and the
like has talked about workers right.

Human rights refer to the basic rights and freedom to which

all humans are entitled. It includes civil and political rights, such as the
right to life and liberty, freedom of expression and equality before
law and social, cultural and economic rights. But women in tea
gardens are seen to be routinely subject to starvation, humiliation ,
domestic abuse, rape, child marriage etc. The condition of women
workers of the tea gardens is very pathetic. They are deprived of
various workers right. Therefore this paper makes a attempt for the
overall study of this subject, so that a effective solution to these
problems comes out in near future.
