1000 word evaluation outline to help you structure the piece.

You will need to refer to

• Peer and self assessment forms, you should have these

• Audience feedback, if you did any

1. Introduction.
Describe the original task (what you were asked to do) briefly, but stating the main points.
What you are going to talk about? Review of the whole process from conception (beginning) to Commented [SC1]:
end.
We were asked to either make a short action film about a hostage or a bomb situation.
We had to do a lot of relevant research and add it all to our Weebly pages. We had to show our
pre-production and our production. Then we had to show our evaluations. Like a daily blog which
starts all of the way back to the beginning.

2. Describe your role.

What did you do? What were your main responsibilities? How did your team decide this?
How did you plan?
Did the plan change? If so why?
Did any changes affect the end product? Made is better/worse?
How effective was your contribution to the product?

I started off as an actor (the more dominant Terrorist) but with the second day of filming everyone
in my group decided that I should also be the director. So I was an actor and a director. My main
responsibilities were to make sure we followed Mise en scene and we kept to our storyboard (to
some extent). I also came up with ideas and I told Mason (the camera man) what type of shot I
want. I also had to make sure I was doing some good acting to make myself look like a realistic
terrorist.
The team decided for me to become director in the second day of filming, this was because when
we were filming I was suggesting good ideas and I was telling the camera man where to film and
what camera shot/angle I want.
I planned by making storyboards and mind maps of what my group wanted to do. I followed the
storyboard to get a general idea but I did change some scenes. I planned how long the filming
would take by making a filming schedule but we found it hard to follow the time amounts I made
and I ended up having to update and make a new one, which ended up being an extra two days.

The plan changed quite a lot. We as a group came up with new ideas when filming and we did not
stick to my time schedule, this was a mix of people not concentrating and me making the
schedule unreasonable.

The changes we made from the storyboard I would day made the film better, I personally think
our version is better than the original storyboard plan. I think it makes more sense and it makes
the final product look better.

I would say my contribution was very important to the product, as director I came up with ideas
and I kept the group concentrated. I did a lot of the paper work like call sheets, risk assessments,
location sheets. I also did things like Mind maps and I made Mise en scene ideas during filming. I
also think my acting contribution was also important because I feel I did my role as the dominant
terrorist very well, making the final product look like a real film.

3. What have you learned?

Skills – technical/scheduling
Knowledge
Production issues
Organisation?
Personal/team work
What are you particularly proud of/went well?
What didn’t go so well? How would I address that in the future?

I have learned how to be a group leader, normally I would let someone else take charge but for
this I felt I needed to step up for once.
I have had learned how to plan and schedule. I now know that my scheduling used to be
unrealistic because I didn’t think about distributions and having to re-take shots.
Time management, you need to be able to manage time not just for the filming but for the whole
project because it is a lot to do in a short amount of time.

My knowledge for media has grown a lot over the past year and for this project alone. I now know
the technical side such as Mise en scene. I have also gained experience with editing and acting.
For the project I have learnt how to add special effects to Premiere Pro, I have also learnt how to
use Mise en scene when filming as a director.

Production issues, as a group we faced a lot of production issues, we struggled to communicate

as a group at first and people were getting annoyed at each other because it was the same
people doing all of the work. We also had struggles when filming, we had to move our main
shootout scene location because the room was un-useable so we had to find a new room. We
also had struggles with the extra actors by them wearing different clothes moeaning we had to re-
shoot.

As a group we were not very organised, I felt two people were not cutting their slack and leaving
for other people to do work. Personally I felt I had to do most of the work, as a group we were
organised when it came to filming but for pre –production we were not organised as much as I
wished, this could be because we didn’t have a designated director.

Personally I did quite a lot of work for the team, I made the call sheets and schedule and I helped
make the Risk assessments eg. Personally I also did a lot of work, I did a lot of research and I did
small things like I made a custom thumbnail, I added to my blog every day and I added
everything I made to the weebly page.
I am proud of all of my research work, I spent a lot of time on it and I am glad with how it turned
out. I am also very proud of my final film product as being director it feels satisfying looking at
your finished piece, I think filming went well after the group got into the filming mind-set filming
went smooth. But I think what went well the most was my editing, I hardly found myself in a bad
situation, I did have a couple like when I was editing at home the college computers couldn’t load
my edit so I had to bring in my laptop. I found added special effects quite easy and fun once I
knew how to do it.

What didn’t go so well, the pre-production with my group, nobody did their fair share of work it
was the same people doing the work. We were not organised and we didn’t communicate very
well. However in the end we did start working as a team.

4. Where do I go next?
Go back to your production diary and identify-
• Skills you would like to improve/work on
• Skills you need to acquire
• How has your contribution helped the production

Skills I would like to improve on would be using more equipment, I would of like to use more
complicated shots like using a slider, this would make the shot look more professional.
I would like to work on my ability to work and communicate with others, I feel organising would
have been more smooth if I was better at this.

Skills I want to acquire: I would like to improve my ability to use after effects because VFX looks
better in the after effects method, it looks smoother. The way I did it was basic and easy making
my special effects look not as realistic.

I would like to improve my ability to use Mise en scene when filming/ directing.

I would say my contribution has majorly helped the production, I did most of the organising and
because I was nominated director I also came up with all of the added on ideas (ones which
weren’t on the storyboard). I also told the camera man where I want to film, what shot I want and
what camera angle I want. I feel I was important to my group.
5. Does the finished product…
• Meet the agreed requirements and parameters, (limits/restrictions) of the task?
• What would I do next time because of the above?

I have met what I first wanted to make, I have match on action of I have used cross cutting just
like I first originally planned. I wanted to make it James Bond themed which I haven’t done but
apart from this I have met all of the requirements I wanted to have.

I have also met the UAL requirements which was make a bomb or hostage film. I decided to
make the bomb because I feel it is more exciting to watch and film.

What will I do different if I did it again? I would make sure my group was organised and I would
plan ahead for problems such as not being able to film ion our chosen room, I will have a backup
plan.
