Report on Intensive Reading Programme

Realizing that learning is a lifelong process, English panel of SK Lela Jasa has come out
with another meaningful programme for year 2 to year 6 pupils in SK Lela Jasa. The programme
called Intensive Reading Programme which was held from February to October of year 2017.
This programme basically is to encourage pupils to read as reading is one of the major
skills which pupils need to master in learning English. Besides, by reading, pupils are hoped to
have many benefits such as will enhance their vocabulary, expand their ideas in writing and
somehow enhance their knowedge in grammar of English Language.
This programme also is seen as killing two birds with a stone, as they will not only read
for the purpose of this programme, but also will cater NILAM programme. The books or short
stories the pupils read will be written in the pupils’ NILAM book.
This programme was held in the classroom, as in the early teaching and learning process,
teachers will distribute the short stories for every pupils, pupils will read the short stories and
listed maximum of 10 new words that they found in the story. Later they will write the words in
their vocabulary book and look up for their meaning in the dictionary.
This programme is hoped to help pupils to enhance their vocabulary so that they will
make use of their knowledge to enhance their writing especially in answering writing paper.
Besides, it also will grow pupils’ interest in reading. Not just that, pupils will also enhance their
other components of learning English such as spelling, punctuation and many others.
However, this programme still need a few improvements such as the short stories should
be prepared according to pupils’ level. Besides, for some pupils who are illiterate, the task can be
very hard and less meaningful to them. Reward and punishment should also being emphasized as
some pupils take the task for granted as many would not be able to look up the meaning of the
words in the dictionary.
Hopefully, this programme will have some impacts upon pupils’ learning process. Hence,
this programme can be an annual programme for the English Panel as it is not just meaningful
but can be very fun too.

Report on Extra Class for UPSR Programme
English Language is not a cup of tea for many pupils especially those who are in rural
areas. Less exposure to the language is one of the major factor that makes English is a very hard
subject to learn. In addition, the changes of the new format, which split English to 2 papers will
add the burden for pupils to carry in learning the language. Realising this, the English Panel of
SK Lela Jasa had come out with a programme which is called Extra Class for UPSR Programme.
This programme is held throughout the year which is from February to August. The
programme is involved all pupils of year 6 Gemilang and 6 Cemerlang which consist of 39
pupils and a teacher. As apposed for this programme, pupils were divided into three groups
according to their level. The first group is for Score A which consists of 8 pupils. The second
group is for B and C scorers which is called Write Better Right Now. It consist of 20 pupils. The
last group is consist of 11 pupils which is called Copy and Remember.
The extra class is held in three different days, once a week for every class. The Score A
class was held every Monday from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm. The Write it Better Right now pupils had
their class on every Tuesday from 2.00 pm to 3.00 pm while the Copy and Remember pupils had
their class in every Wednesday from 2.00 pm to 3.00 pm. The teacher guided pupils in answering
the questions prepared according to their levels.
This programme was really helpful in enhancing pupils’ performance in their exam.
Pupils had more confident to answer the questions in their exam. Besides, the pupils realized
their weaknesses and strength. This has given a lot of benefit to their learning. Peer coaching was
also encouraged during the programme. The pupils sharped their knowledge when they coached
their peers.
However, less human source effected the programme. As only a teacher involved in the
programme, pupils somehow could not be given attention as they requested. Besides, materials
prepared also were not from different sources. Questions from trial papers from different states
for example should be included.
Hopefully, this programme will give full benefit to all pupils of Year 6. This programme
also should be included in every year panel event as it is really meaningful and helpful in
enhancing pupils’ performance in learning English.
