READING, WRITING, SPEAKING AND LISTENING

Traditionally, language teachers have considered it necessary to teach
their students all four skills: Reading, writing, speaking and listening. The
idea is that speaking reinforces listening, writing reinforces reading, etc.
Traditionally, students have been young, the teacher did not know which
skills (reading, writing, speaking or listening) they would need in later life.
But you are studying a course which concentrates only on reading. The
question is: Is it possible to read without knowing the pronunciation?
Evidence from studies of deaf-mutes (who cannot speak or listen) indicates
that it is possible to read silently without mental “pronunciation” of the
words (sub-vocalization). There are thousands of people in the world who
cannot speak a language but who can read it. Reading is probably the most
useful and durable skill of the four, for most students.

In conclusion, it seems that vocabulary can be a problem but it is only
one of the problems. It is probably not the most difficult problem – the
