REQUIRED TEXT:
Asperheim, M.K. (2012).Introduction to Pharmacology (12th Ed.). Elsevier. St. Louis, Missouri.
ISBN: 978-1-4377-1706-8
OPTIONAL TEXT: Any Nursing Drug Guide. I like Nursing Spectrum and Davis’ Drug Guide. Many students find
these at used book stores for a few dollars. Guides even a few years old are sufficient, as new drugs are slow
to market.
WEBSITE SUPPORT: We will also be using Canvas for grades, announcements and discussion board
ATTENDANCE: Attendance is required. It is the student’s responsibility to arrive on time, be prepared to learn,
actively participate and contribute to the class. It is your responsibility to notify the instructor if you are tardy
or leave early. You will be awarded 1 participation point if you are present for both attendance polls taken at
3 and 5 pm
CLASS PARTICIPATION: Lectures will be interactive. You are expected to come prepared by reading the
required text prior to class and completing both critical thinking and review questions. Each student should be
ready to actively participate in classroom discussion of critical thinking case studies and other material. Each
student is eligible for participation points by completing and submitting critical thinking case study worksheets

Quizzes and final exam will offer assessment of learning by using multiple-choice questions. The assigned drug
report will require research and the ability to present the material clearly and concisely.
Required: 6 light blue Scantrons® (50 questions on each side) Available at the OCC Bookstore and vending
machines around the OCC campus.

Final Exam 100

If you miss a quiz due to tardiness or absence, you may make up the quiz within 7 days, but you will have a
20% reduction in points. No quiz may be made up more than 7 days after the quiz date. The final exam cannot
be made up. If you have a significant scheduling conflict, such as a family need, that will prevent you from
taking a quiz or exam on the scheduled date; you may make arrangements to take the quiz or exam early. To
arrange for an alternate testing day, you must notify the instructor at least 7 days before the scheduled date.

Your instructor’s role is to teach and facilitate student learning through rigorous and demanding study and
practice. My areas of expertise for which I have been hired do not extend to counseling students regarding
their personal, financial, health and/or emotional problems. There are many resources available to assist
students experiencing problems of these types. Please do not ask me for medical advice. This means via e-
mail, during my office hours or during class time. This places me in a non-professional, and frankly,
uncomfortable position. I am employed by OCC as a professor/program director, not as a free health advice
nurse. This is also related to the liability issues related to my malpractice carrier. All health and psychological
concerns should be directed to your personal health practitioner. If you do not have one, please, contact the
The Orange Coast College Student Health Center which is located near Parking Lot A on the east side of
campus. The Health Center may be reached by telephone at (714) 432-5808.
Your instructor is available for questions regarding course material during office hours and class periods. If
students have questions pertaining to course material or clinical assignments at other times, they may email
the instructor at lcottrell@occ.cccd.edu
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY/CHEATING:
An incidence of cheating will result in a failing grade. It will be reported to the Dean of Students with a
recommendation for disciplinary action consistent with the Academic Honesty Policy and the Student Code of
Conduct. Examples of cheating are:
1. obtaining information from another student during an examination
2. communicating information to another student during an examination
3. knowingly allowing another student to copy one’s work
4. offering another person’s work as one’s own
5. taking an examination for another student or having someone take an exam for oneself
6. sharing answers for a collaborative project and take-home unless specifically authorized by the
instructor
7. using unauthorized material during an examination
8. altering a graded examination or assignment and returning it for additional credit
9. having another person or company do research writing and/or writing of an assigned paper or report
10. misreporting or altering the data in laboratory or research projects
CELL PHONES AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Absolutely NO cell phones or electronic devices during class. If you
are using a computer for note-taking, please make sure you are not on social media, games, etc…during
lecture. If you are carrying one on your person or if you have one in your purse or book bag, please, TURN IT
OFF! Please let your instructor know if you are experiencing an emergent situation.

RECORDING INSTRUCTOR: The use of electronic audio or video recording devices during class is a violation of
the course syllabus, Coast Community College Student Code of Conduct (Board Policy 5500), and the California
Education Code section 78907. The instructor does not permit the distribution of words or images in any form
of film, video, or electronic communication. Additionally, I understand that unauthorized recording or
distribution of classroom content is an unlawful intellectual property infringement.
OTHERS IN CLASS: No children, animals or non-registered persons in class. If you have a service animal, please
bring your certificate of proof.
Log onto: http://www.drugs.com/top200.html or similar website and research the top 25 prescribed drugs, by
sales, in the US. For this assignment, you may use any format that works for you, i.e., 3x5 cards, standard
format, table, etc…however, it/they must be typed/word processed. For those of you continuing in the MA
program, you will use this assignment as part of your clinical rotation information resources.
