SCRIPT

SCENE ONE
INT. CLASSROOM – LATE AFTERNOON
The screen cuts to film when a voice is heard off-screen, yelling at
the main character.

MRS DEAN

(Off-screen & shouting)

Matilda!

Enter MATILDA HAMILTON, a young teenage girl aged approximately

fifteen years old. She is dressed in a white school shirt, a red and
gold tie and a dark blue blazer. Matilda (more commonly referred to
as ‘Mattie’) is sat at her desk, sleeping over it. As her name is
called out, she jolts awake.

MRS DEAN

(Annoyed)

Sorry if I am boring you Miss

Hamilton, however this is
detention. Not a time for you to
catch up on forty winks.

Mattie kisses her teeth and hisses slightly.

MATTIE

(Agitated)

Nah Miss leave off.

Mrs Dean looks confused by the attitude she is receiving from her
student. She frowns at Mattie.

MRS DEAN

(Offended)

Excuse me?!

Mattie slumps back in her seat. The audience can see the drawings in
her text book of knights and wizards. There might be a few figurines
on her desk as well.

MATTIE

(Cockily)

I’m not doing anything.

MRS DEAN

Exactly Matilda. You’re meant to be

writing lines, but you don’t seem
to be doing anything.

MATTIE

I was tired, so I fell asleep. What

are you gonna do about it? I’m
already in detention.

Mrs Dean considers her options for a moment.

MRS DEAN

(Unimpressed)

Take out your phone Matilda.

MATTIE

(Confused)

Urm, why?

MRS DEAN

Just take it out.

Mattie looks puzzled as she slowly takes out her phone from her pocket.

MATTIE

Alright, what now?

Mrs Dean smiles smugly before delivering her next line.

MRS DEAN

You need to text your Mum to say

you’ll be staying afterschool
another hour.

Mattie sighs and rolls her eyes. She starts texting. Mrs Dean turns
back around to face the board.

MRS DEAN

(off-screen and fades out towards

the end)

Just in case you forgot, the line

you are writing is ‘I will not skip
class’.
Mattie finishes her text and looks up from her phone. She smiles
weakly, as if she has a secret reason for wanting to stay at school
late.

SCENE TWO

EXT. TOWN CENTRE – LATE AFTERNOON/EARLY EVENING

Mattie is walking through the town centre, past shops and other
features of Reading Town/Henley Town. She is alone and disjointed
from reality. She sits down at a bus stop or a bench, and takes out
her phone. There are messages from her dad, and when she opens them
they appear on screen next to her. She quickly replies to him,
apologising for being late. She receives another message from him,
clearly very angry. She looks up, scared.

SCENE THREE
INT. HOME BATHROOM – LATE NIGHT
Mattie is standing by a dirty mirror, brushing her teeth. She has
earplugs in her ears and is swaying a little to the music. There is
arguing going on in the background, so she looks to the door. Instead
of moving though she just looks back at the mirror and aggressively
brushes her teeth some more. As the arguing gets louder, she keeps
looking at the door. This drags out for a bit, before she starts
hearing screaming. At that point, she puts down her toothbrush and
walks to the door. About three seconds after it closes, there is a
slap sound and the screen goes black.

SCENE FOUR
INT. SCHOOL BATHROOM - MORNING
Mattie stands next to the mirrors in the school bathroom, tying
up her school tie. She runs her hand over the bruise that is
circling her eye and she winces. She leans in to get a closer
look, and the audience can see the large purple bruise that has
started to form. After she has been looking at it for a while,
she hears the sounds of girls coming into the bathroom. She runs
into the bathroom, listening to what they are talking about. The
girls begin to ‘bitch’ so she turns her back and starts to calm
down. The bell rings and she hears them leave, so she pokes her
head out of the stall door.
SCENE FIVE

EXT. SCHOOL FIELD - DAY

Mattie walks down to the bottom of the hill. She sits at the bottom,
next to an old arc-like structure. She opens up her bag, and pulls
out an old fairy-tale book. Camera zooms in as she starts to read
the book. Her eyes flicker across the page, and her hand tracks the
words she is reading. As the voiceover starts, the camera zooms back
out.

MATTIE

(Voiceover)

The hero of the story never starts

out believing themselves to be a
hero. If they did, it would be a
very boring tale. So instead, the
hero needs to be guided into a
teaching, from which they will
discover their destiny and begin
their adventures. Finding someone
to guide them is difficult, even
though a lot of the time they are
right under their nose.

By the end of the shot, a Wizard should be sat next to the main
character. They are facing Mattie, who has no idea they are there.
Two-shot, with the characters side-by-side.

WIZARD

Your book is right, you know?

Mattie jumps at the shock of someone talking to her. She stares at the
Wizard, who just smiles at her. Matilda seems confused as to why the
Wizard is there.

MATTIE
(Surprised)

What?

The Wizard laughs from under their hood. They slowly take off the hood
of their cape. One-shot of each character, taken with room around
their head and to the side.

WIZARD

You don’t have to live like this,

there is another way.

MATTIE

(Confused)

I’m sorry, who are you?

WIZARD

Your book says that you need

something to turn you into the hero
you are at heart. If I am correct,
that ‘thing’ happens to me.

Mattie stares at the Wizard, clearly very confused by what they are
saying.

WIZARD

I thought you’d be more excited

about the prospect, if I am honest.

Mattie stares at the ground and plays with her shoelace.

MATTIE

(Mumbling at the ground)

I’m not a hero.

WIZARD

(Uplifting)

Of course you are. You just need

someone to guide you – hence my
presence.

Mattie looks up at the Wizard. She’s confused.

MATTIE

(Puzzled)

How could I be a hero?

WIZARD

You could start by reporting your

Dad.

There is an awkward silence, where Matilda looks around at the scenery

distractedly. Back and forth one-shots of the characters when talking.

MATTIE

(Puzzled)

Why would I report my Dad?

WIZARD

He’s the one who caused this

bruise?

Long-shot as Mattie stays silent. She looks back at the ground.

WIZARD

Am I right?

MATTIE

(confused)

How did you know that?

WIZARD

I’m a figment of your imagination,

don’t stress about it.

MATTIE

(Puzzled)

What?

WIZARD

There is a part of you that knows

that what your Dad is doing to you
and your Mum is wrong. I’m your
way of coping with it.

MATTIE

Like an imaginary friend?

WIZARD

Yeah I guess. Going from my

attire, I’m assuming you’re a fan
of wizards.
MATTIE

Wizards are always seen as wise. I

guess I just needed someone to
help me.

WIZARD

Well then let me offer you some

advice. I think that you should
seek some guidance about the
situation at home.

Long-shot of an awkward silence.

MATTIE

What situation?

Back to the ‘back and forth’ one-shots between the characters as

they talk.

WIZARD

The abuse you and your Mum receive

from your Dad.

MATTIE

There is nothing I can do about it

though. He doesn’t mean to get so
mad, we just provoke him.

WIZARD

(Suspicious)

Is that what your Dad tells you?

Long-shot of an awkward silence.

MATTIE

Yeah, why?

WIZARD

That’s a lie Mattie. By

definition, what he is doing you
to you and your mum is domestic
abuse.

MATTIE

Domestic abuse?

WIZARD

I know that it’s scary, but by

reporting him to the police you
would be able to get protection
for you and your Mum.

Long-shot of them sat at the arch.

MATTIE

What would happen if I reported

him?

WIZARD

Well, firstly he would be

questioned by the police and if
found guilty of domestic abuse
then he would be charged in a
court of law.

MATTIE

I’m not going to send my Dad to

prison just because he gets mad
sometimes.

WIZARD

Everyone gets mad sometimes. Not

everyone breaks bones and cuts
cheeks though.

Matilda starts shoving things into her bag. Camera cuts back to the
Wizard who looks confused. Cuts back to Matilda storming away.

MATTIE

You don’t know me. You don’t know

what my family is like.

WIZARD

That’s just your problem Mattie. I

do know.

Mattie storms away from the Wizard, taking her books and her bag
with her. She walks off into the distance.

WIZARD

(Voiceover with clips of Mattie

walking away)

While many people believe that it’s

a small issue, it actually works
out that 16% of all crime in the
United Kingdom is domestic abuse.

On average, one in four women will

face domestic abuse in the UK, as
well as one in six men.

Sadly, there is still a large

stigma associated with domestic
abuse. It takes bravery and courage
to stand up to ones abuser.

No one said that being the knight

in shining armour was easy.

SCENE SIX
EXT. SCHOOL COURTYARD – DAY
Matilda storms off towards one of the school buildings. The Wizard
follows her, calling out her name. Should last approximately 10-20
seconds.

WIZARD

(Spaced out, takes quite a bit of

time)

Matilda! Matilda come back!

Matilda!

Matilda completely ignores him, walking away. He catches up to her,

grabbing her arm. She flinches.

WIZARD

Mattie, I’m sorry. Please listen

to me.

MATILDA

(Angry. Turns around to face the

Wizard)
Do I look like a snitch to you?

(Yelling)

Do I?

WIZARD

(Cut off)

It’s not about snitching-

MATILDA

(Angry)

That’s just it. If I report my own

Dad to the police, it’s game over.
You don’t do that stuff to family.

She starts to walk away again, but the Wizard continues to follow.

WIZARD

(Calmly explains)

Matilda listen! You’re not a

snitch for protecting yourself and
your Mum from someone whose
abusive.

MATILDA

(Facing the front with the Wizard

behind her)

I don’t care, I’m not getting him

into trouble.
The Wizard stops walking abruptly as Matilda keeps running away.
The Wizard looks confused for a bit (Close-up shot)

WIZARD

Is it because you’re scared?

Matilda stops walking. She turns around and starts to walk back
towards the Wizard.

MATILDA

(Adamant and a mid-shot)

I’m not scared of him.

WIZARD

Then you should be. Just because

he’s your Dad doesn’t mean that he
can get away with physically
hurting you. That bruise on your
eye looks painful.

MATILDA

(Touching the bruise)

It’s not that bad. I mean, it

stings a little. But it’s nothing
compared to some of the other
stuff he’s done before.

WIZARD

(Not in shot)

How often does he hit you?

MATILDA

I don’t know, it’s not like I keep

count.

WIZARD

Once a week?

MATILDA

Yeah, I guess.

Some school children walk past the hallway. Matilda looks towards
then, and then looks like running away.

WIZARD

(Hand on Matilda’s shoulder)

Come on, let’s go somewhere a

little more private.

SCENE SEVEN
INT. STAIRCASE – DAY
Matilda and the Wizard are sat on the staircase. Matilda is looking
at the floor. Over-the-shoulder shots to get the dialogue in.

MATILDA

(Space out each sentence)

He always says that it will be the

last time. That he won’t hit me
again. That he won’t hurt Mum.

WIZARD

(Serious)
But it never is.

MATILDA

(Serious, looking at the ground)

Never.

WIZARD

Then don’t you think that it’s

about time you did something about
this?

MATILDA

I don’t know where to start.

WIZARD

Well the first thing you should do

is get in contact with social
services, and see what they can do
to help the situation.

MATILDA

No one trusts social services.

They split apart families. My mate
Tracey was taken away from her Mum
and then she was in a care home
until she was sixteen.

WIZARD

I know social services are painted

in a bad light, but they only do
what they do to protect people and
give them the best opportunities.
MATILDA

(Huffs)

Tracey’s still pissed though.

WIZARD

(Laughs)

MATILDA

What else can I do?

WIZARD

Well you can start by getting in

touch with companies that offer
support with domestic abuse. Most
of them have a website or a
Freephone you can call.

Matilda pulls out her mobile phone. She plays with it in her hands.
Close-up of the phone in her hands.

MATILDA

I’ve only got one number in here.

It’s my Dad’s. He says that I
should be the only one who
contacts him. If I don’t reply to
his texts straight away, he gets
proper mad. Starts smashing stuff
up.

Matilda looks down at the phone then back up at the Wizard. Mid-shot
of them.
MATILDA

I’m guessing that that’s not

normal either.

WIZARD

None of this is normal Matilda.

But that is why getting help for
you as soon as possible is the
best option. So that the damage
the abuse has done won’t have
lasting effects.

Long-shot of the two on the staircase. Cuts to over-the-shoulder

shots again.

WIZARD

You’ll be able to leave your dad,

and your old life behind.

MATILDA

(Confused)

Where will we go?

WIZARD

Your local council will offer

temporary homeless shelter
accommodation which you can stay
in while the lawsuit against your
Dad is being pursued. Because you
are currently living at an at-risk
household of domestic abuse and
domestic violence, you will be
high priority.
MATILDA

So I don’t have to be like man-on-

the-street?

WIZARD

(Laughing)

No, it won’t be like that at all.

These are shelters that both you
and your Mum can stay at, with a
beds and lights and a lock.

Matilda smiles and looks back down at her phone. Close-up.

WIZARD

I know that you can do this. You

don’t have to be just another
statistic, you can take action and
fight back. The sooner the police
and social services get involved
the sooner you stop having to deal
with his shit.

The school bell rings as the Wizard finishes the sentence. Mattie
looks over at where the Wizard was sat but there is no one there.

SCENE EIGHT
INT. BEDROOM – LATE EVENING

Matilda is scrolling through her laptop on some of the websites that

are available for people suffering domestic abuse. She looks through
them, serious expression on her face.

SCENE NINE
INT. OUTSIDE OFFICE – MIDDAY
Matilda and the Wizard are sat outside of the office, waiting to go
inside. Matilda is playing on her phone. Side-shot of the two.
MATILDA

I’m worried.

WIZARD

What about?

MATILDA

I guess I am just scared that

everything is going to change.

WIZARD

It is going to change.

Matilda looks up from her phone.

WIZARD

But that doesn’t mean that change

is bad. You and your Mum are going
to be so much safer once the
police and social services step
in, and they will do everything in
their power to make sure that this
doesn’t happen to you again.

Cuts to a long-shot of the two sat on chairs outside.

MATILDA

Will you come in there with me?

Long-shot as the Wizard smiles at Matilda.

WIZARD

I’ll always be with you Mattie.

Just in here (points at head)
instead.

Matilda closes her eyes and breathes deeply (Mid-shot). She pockets
her phone and then stands up. She knocks on the door and goes
inside. Camera pans back to the Wizard, sat on the chair outside.

WIZARD

There is still so much that needs

to be done in order to ensure that
nobody has to experience domestic
abuse again.

Cuts to Mattie in her meeting.

WIZARD

(Gets up and starts to walk away

from the office, into the
courtyard)

But it all starts with reporting

the abuse. In 2017 alone, there has
been an estimate of 1.9 million
accounts of domestic abuse. Only
1.2 million cases were taken to
trial, with even less than that
resulting in a conviction. People
don’t want to report their
brothers, sisters, loved ones.

Cuts to Mattie in her meeting.

WIZARD

If he hits you, he’s no longer

worthy of the title husband.

Clip of someone bruised.

If she threatens to tell everyone

that you’re gay unless you stay
with her, she’s no longer worthy of
the title girlfriend.

Clip of someone bruised.

If they leave bruises that take

weeks to heal, they are no longer
worthy of the title parents.

Clip of someone bruised.

They need to be stopped.

SCENE

INT. DESK – ANYTIME

The book starts to close, but the clip freezes. It rewinds.

VOICEOVER

If only the story was over. Sadly,

it is not. Instead, this is just
the start of Mattie’s journey and
she still has one hell of a fight
ahead of her. And this…
This is just the start.

Fades to black. White text appears on the screen – facts about

domestic abuse and the victims (especially regarding children). At
the end, the helpline appears on screen.

PROJECT CONCEPT

Matilda, otherwise known as Mattie, is a young teenage girl living with her two parents. While seeming like the
perfect family on the outside, secretly Mattie is terrified of her abuse father who takes out his anger on her mother.
One night, after hearing them fighting, she sneaks out of the house and runs into the local woods. There, she
stumbles (quite literally) on a book filled to the brim with story tales. As she begins to read one about a lost boy in
the woods, she discovers a friend hiding out in the trees with her. He tells her stories about how he was running
away from a dragon who used to be his mother, and she plays along with his fantasy. When her mother calls her
home, Mattie leaves the boy in the woods and goes back to the house. Once she gets there, she sees that her
father is still abusing her mother, so she plucks up the courage to call the police for help. As they arrive, she drops
the book open and it falls to the last page. It reads ‘And the dragon was slain’. The film ends with the girl and the
boy talking to the camera about the statistics of domestic violence, as well as some helplines and websites to visit.
