HOLIDAY HOMEWORK (2018-19)

PHYSICS : XII

* Note:
The holiday homework should be done on separate registers/notebooks as per the
given instructions.Submit the same by 6th july 2018
ELECTROSTATIC POTENTIAL, ELECTRIC CHARGES & FIELDS
1. The sum of two point charges is 7µc. They repel each other with a force of 1 N when kept 30
cm apart in free space. Calculate the value of each charge.
2. (a) Deduce the expression for the potential energy of a system of two point charges q1 and q2
brought from infinity to the point r1 and r2 respectively in the presence of external electric
field E.
(b) Draw the Equipotential surfaces for a system of two identical positive point charges
placed a distance‘d’ apart.
3. A Hollow metal sphere of radius 6 cm is charged such that the potential on its surface is 12v.
What is the potential at the centre of the sphere?
4. Define Electric Dipole moment. Write its S.I. unit.
5. A spherical conductivity shell of inner radius r1 and outer radius r2 has a charge ‘Q’. A charge
‘q’ is placed at the centre of the shell.
a) What is the surface charge density on the (i) inner surface (ii) outer surface of the shell.
b) Write the expression for the electric field at a point x > r2 from the centre of the shell.
6. An electric dipole of length 4 cm when placed with its axis making an angle of 60º with a
uniform electric field, experiences of 4√3 Nm. Calculate the potential energy of the dipole, if it
has charge ±Qnc.
7. “The outward electric Flux due to charge +Q is independent of the shape and size of the surface
which encloses it. Give two reasons to justify this statement.
8. What is the electrostatic potential due to electric dipole at an Equatorial point?
9. Two point charges +4µc and -2µc are separated by a distance of 1m in air. Calculate at what
point on the line joining the two charges is the electric potential zero?
10. Force of attraction between two point charges placed at a distance d is F. What distance apart
should they be kept in the same medium so that force between them is F/3?
11.Using Gauss’s law, derive an expression for the electric field Intensity at any point near a
uniformly charged thin wire of linear charge density X c/m.

12.Deduce an expression for the Electric Potential due to an Electric dipole at any point on its
axis.Mention one contrasting feature of electric potential at a point as compared to that due to a
single charge.
13. A parallel plate capacitor is charged to a potential difference v by a d.c source. The capacitor is
then disconnected from the source. If the distance between the plates is doubled,State with
reason how the following will change;
I. Electric Field between the plates
II. Capacitance and
III. Energy Stored in the capacitor
14. Explain the effect of introducing a dielectric slab between the plates of a parallel plate
capacitor on its capacitance. Drive an expression for its capacitance with dielectric as the
medium between the plates.
15. Obtain the expression for capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor.
