LEGISLATIVE
CHAMPIONS
State Sen. René Garcia (FL)
Senator René Garcia has been a champion and leader to modernize Florida’s HIV specific
statute since 2016. He introduced a modernization bill in 2017 and 2018. While the bill
did not get passed, Senator Garcia provided great educational opportunities and outreach
to his fellow legislators.
He was born and raised in the city of Hialeah to working class Cuban American parents.
In 1997, at the age of 24, René García was elected to a two-year term on the Hialeah City
Council. He was re-elected, to a four-year term in November 1999.
He was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in November of 2000 and was re-elected
consecutively in 2002, 2004 and 2006. René García was elected to Florida’s State Senate on November 2,
2010. He is currently the Chairman of the Health care Regulation Committee. Garcia also serves on the
following committees: Agriculture, Budget Sub-committee on Health & Human Services Appropriations,
Governmental Oversight & Accountability, Reapportionment and Transportation.

State Rep. Jon Hoadley (MI)

Jon Hoadley is in his second term as the representative for the 60th House District in
Michigan, which includes Kalamazoo and portions of the city of Portage and Kalamazoo
Township. He currently serves on the appropriations committee, including the following
subcommittees: Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (Democratic
vice chair), Higher Education (Democratic vice chair), and the Michigan Department of
Environmental Quality.
Rep. Hoadley is a leading voice in the fight for nonpartisan redistricting, reducing the
influence of money in politics, and term limit reform, as well as for increasing education funding, lowering
student debt, raising wages for working people, paid sick leave, protecting the environment, and ending
discrimination. He is a small business owner and president and owner of Badlands Strategies, a progressive
public affairs firm. He has a track record of running ballot measures advancing LGBTQ equality and regularly
consults on nondiscrimination campaigns across the country.

State Rep. John McCrostie (ID)

John’s political involvement sprouted in Idaho’s successful “Vote No on Props 1, 2
and 3” education referendum campaign. John developed his educational and union
leadership through elected positions in the Boise Education Association, Idaho Education
Association, and the National Education Association.
Through his legislative tenure, John sponsored bills to ban conversion therapy, to repeal
Idaho’s marriage equality ban, and to modernize Idaho’s non-discrimination and hate
crimes statutes by including “sexual orientation and gender identity.” In 2015, the Imperial
Court System presented John with the Jose Julio Sarria Civil Rights Award, and in 2018, the Idaho Counseling
Association presented John with their Equality Award. John is the first openly gay man and first openly gay
person of color to serve in the Idaho Legislature.
