SEISMIC ANALYSIS QUALIFICATION FOR

TGOOD SUBSTATION

1 General

The 66KV &13.2(6.9) KV Prefabricated Switching Station

The 66KV&13.2(6.9) KV prefabricated switching station is used for 66kV
substation to open and close the 66kV and 13.2(6.9) kV feeder. It consists of two
main parts – 66kV roof top equipment and modular e-house.
The 66kV roof top equipment
The hybrid GIS breakers allowed the addition of isolation switches, multiple
current transformers and grounding switches within the same footprint of a
standard 66 kV dead-tank breaker.
The 66kV switchyard equipment was designed to be assembled on the top of the
e-house, eliminating the need for multiple cast-in-place concrete foundations.
Also, the assembled 66kV equipment on the roof makes the substation more
compact to save substation area.
The Modular E-house
The modular E-house consists of 13.2(6.9) kV switchgear, panels and other
auxiliary system.
13.2(6.9) kV switchgear adopts TGOOD welded type switchgear which can meet
customer flexible application requirements.
With the majority of the fabrication, internal assembly and wiring performed in
an efficient factory environment, the prefabricated modular E-house only needs a
little commissioning work before energized on site.

The modular compact design can be successfully applied to both medium and
high voltage solutions, as shown by 66KV &13.2(6.9) KV Prefabricated
Switching Station. Transportation, infrastructure and skilled labor challenges are
easily overcome by utilizing this concept.

2.2 Maximum input accelerations

In accordance with <<IEEE 693-2005 Annex D Transformers and liquid-filled
reactors>>, there are given recommendations the vertical acceleration value
relative to the horizontal one in the norms:
a v max  0.80  a h max
Where
a v max - maximum vertical acceleration

a h max - maximum horizontal acceleration

Two horizontal values of acceleration (longitudinal & traverse direction) and a

vertical value of accelerations were used as below, (g: acceleration due to
gravity :32.2 ft/s2 (9810 mm/s2)).
ah max  6.48 g
av max  0.80  6.48 g
The safety factor is greater than or equal to 2.0 leading to the conclusion that
must withstand 2  2  1.62g = 6.48g according to IEEE693-2005 if porcelain
insulators are used. The factor 1.62 is the maximum acceleration response
spectrum of NORAM in "high level". This is a safety factor, and the value would
be 1.2  1.5  2  1.32g = 4.75g when applying the ETG-1020. Those values are
very high and very difficult to comply with porcelain insulators. So synthetic
polymeric insulators are used and are possible to meet those accelerations.

3 Method of analysis

3.1 Method of analysis

To analyze the substation for seismic stability, several calculation schemes are used.

3.1.1 Calculation scheme for response spectrum analysis

For complex structures with many modes in the seismic range, a detailed finite element
model is needed. The RRS method is used with damping ratio of 2% when analyzing the
whole structure and E house. The loads and modal stresses are combined using the SRSS
method. High required response spectrum (0.5g) is used. The curve of spectral
acceleration versus frequency is shown below.

Spectral Accelerations, S a (g) , for Frequencies, f(Hz):

S a (g)  1.44 f for 0.0  1.1

11
SEISMIC ANALYSIS QUALIFICATION FOR TGOOD SUBSTATION

S a (g)  1.25 for 1.1  8.0

S a (g)  (1.32  5.28) / f  0.4   0.66 for 8.0  33

S a (g)  0.5 for f>33

  (3.21  0.68ln(d )) / 2.1156 , where d is the percent damping (2,5,10,etc.) and

d  20%.

3.1.2 Calculation scheme for static coefficient analysis

The static analysis is used to calculate the bolts connected to the ground and separate
parts of the substation. A factor of 1.0 times g is to be applied when analyzing the bolts
connected to the ground according to the mass distribution in each principal axis
direction(vertical and two horizontal) simultaneously. And a factor of 6.48 times g is to be
applied when analyzing separate parts of the substation according to the mass distribution
in each principal axis direction(vertical and two horizontal) simultaneously.

3.2 Loads
Below loads have been considered in this model.

3.2.1 Dead load

The dead load of the steel is applied in the vertical direction. A translational nodal
acceleration of 1.0g is applied to the vertical global Y-direction of the ANSYS model.
Vertical Translation Acceleration, a=1.0g

3.2.2 Seismic loads

The load consists of 100% of the weight of steel and lumped oil mass applied to 3 (three)
directions.
- Horizontal acceleration a = 6.48g
- Horizontal acceleration a = 6.48g
- Vertical acceleration a = 0.8*6.48g

In the method of static analysis the value of seismic loads depends on the feature of the
construction function at earthquakes. According to IEEE693-2005, “The vertical seismic
forces act simultaneously with both horizontal seismic forces. The three forces at each
component’s CG is applied using the SRSS method in the direction that produces the
most severe equipment stresses, and then combined with dead load stresses and normal
operating stresses.”
ASD = 1.0D +1.0ERRS +1.0OP
D is the dead load
ERRS is the earthquake load demand from the RRS (service load)

12
SEISMIC ANALYSIS QUALIFICATION FOR TGOOD SUBSTATION

OP is the normal operating load

3.3 Combinations of loads

The combinations of loads is calculated in accordance with the ASCE standard of the
ASCE 7_Chapter 2. The combinations of load are taken into account. And the first
combination is also the IEEE 693 stated in section 3.2.2 of the report.

1 : 1.00D+1.00E+1.00OP

Where:
D : dead load
E : weight of earthquake

3.4 Name of computer program

The Analytical procedure to conduct the design, static and response spectrum analyses is
done by the computation software. The multi-purpose Finite Element Method computer
program used to perform the detailed analysis is ANSYS release R14.0.

4 Analysis result

4.1 Numeric result

adequacy of the geometry.
