Shellfish Conservation Intern | Stockton University | May 2017 – August 2017


• Set up tanks of oyster larva on discarded shells, to later be deposited on artificial oyster reefs to
help the New Jersey oyster population expand.
• Sampled oyster spat from various locations to understand how water quality affects the health and
population of oysters.
• Calibrated and deployed tilt current meters/HOBO devices in key locations around the Mullica
River Great Bay Estuary.
• Connected with the public at several environmental outreach events designed to help the
community understand the importance of shellfish conservation.
• Analyzed the connection between oyster spat and water currents so the data could be presented as
a poster at Stockton University’s research day event.

• Operated seines and otter trawls to collect a variety of marine organisms.

• Worked together with professors and students to sort, count, and release fish caught in the Mullica
River Great Bay Estuary area.
• Learned how to take and document environmental data, such as salinity and pH, to understand the
conditions that influence local fish ecology.
• Utilized microscopes, caliper rulers, and fish ID guides to identify a variety of fish species found in
New Jersey waters.
• Entered the collected data into large excel spreadsheets; then analyzed to create a scientific
research poster.
• Carefully tagged and took DNA samples of multiple species of sharks to aid a graduate research
project in association with the Guy Harvey Research Institute.

Reestablishing a Seafood Favorite: How do Water Currents Affect the Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea
Virginica)? | October 2017
• Created and presented a poster at the Mid-Atlantic Chapter American Fisheries Society meeting in
Dover, Delaware on the effects of water currents on the spat of Crassostrea virginica.
A Change in Summer Flounder Migration Patterns | April 2016
• Presented a poster at the Stockton University Research Day event on the abundance of summer
flounder in estuaries in the winter.
