Automatic inflation system

17-May-2016 01:04 EDT

Michelin Auto Inflate is a wheel-mounted tire management solution that allows fleets to
automatically maintain optimal tire pressure. The system, powered by Halo in association
with Aperia Technologies, can save fleets an estimated $2400 per tractor-tire annually by
reducing tire-related downtime events, extending tire life, improving fuel economy and
increasing safety. The device can be retrofit on existing vehicles or incorporated as an add-on to
new equipment. It works with both duals and wide-base single tires. The compact, self-powered
pump can be mounted to the hub in 10 minutes using standard tools. With each wheel rotation,
the device monitors and adjusts for low air pressure.

Self Inflating Tires Do Just That

If Coda's claims are true, their Self Inflating Tires in development now seem like an inevitable
future for car owners. The simple mechanism works with classic principles of a peristaltic pump:
a tube is placed in each tire's sidewall. As it run over, the tube's compression forces air in (filling
the tire). A cut-off makes sure the tire doesn't explode. That's it. Sound too good to be true?
Maybe. But having all tires on the road at optimal inflation could lead to a huge gas/energy
savings every year (and as our friends at Jalopnik point out, it's pretty good for safety as well).
So our ears are perked waiting for more information.
Future Farming: A Self-inflating tractor tire
catherinacunnane, Farming Future, news, Technology

Many farmers can relate to the tedious process of tire inflation, but PTG, a company
based in Germany has devised a possible solution, as reported by Future Farming.
The innovative tire inflation systems will be showcased at Agritechnica next week.
The concept was developed by PTG close to two decades, but it has undergone major
research and development down through the years
A contactless system for transferring information from pressure sensor in a tractor’s
rotating tire to the static axle has been developed and offers a very attractive and
competitive package for farmers.
The sensor measures the pressure inside the tire and that is then integrated into the
PTG wheel valve.
Adjusting tire inflation
There is a two-line inflation system means that farmers can make adjustments to fit the
necessary requirements when travelling on and off-road, allowing the operators to
optimise performance, with the added benefit of helping to maximise safety.
The company claims that the lifetime of the sealings exceeds more than 10,000
operating hours of the tractor.
The RDS system allows double or triple tires to be connected to the axel and to regulate
the auto tires, while the company also claims that the decreasing air pressure also goes
four times faster.
Benefits
€1.45/ha has been saved per operation, up to 20% less tyre wear, up to 10% less fuel
consumption, up to 20% more traction power and up to 6% more yield, are among some
of the benefits of the system that the company outline on their website.

Self-Inflating Tubes Let You Control Your Bike's Tire Pressure While Riding

Whether you're tackling mountain trails or just trying to get through Manhattan's Chinatown,
rough terrain can put your bike's tubes at serious risk. It's not usually an option to hop off and
adjust your tire pressure, but a company called Adaptrac has a system that mounts a toggle right
on your handlebars and allows you to raise or lower your pressure even while riding.
The Adaptrac system is essentially a CO2 cartridge of varying sizes that straps to your downtube,
where you'd mount a water bottle. It comes with replacement hubs of its own, and plugs into
both front and rear tires. Controls--the toggle for adding/reducing pressure, as well as a pair of
analog pressure gauges--are mounted on the handlebars. Assuming it all works--and there's a lot
of engineering trickiness going on here, to make sure everything stays connected and rotating
properly--you'd be able to individually adjust tire pressure while riding.

That could definitely come in handy--Adaptrac notes that you could decrease the pressure for
more traction on a downhill coast, and then increase it upon the next climb for an easier ride. It'd
probably match nicely with a powered gear-set.

No word on pricing or availability yet, as it's still in the prototype stage, but that should come
fairly soon.

Goodyear's self-inflating tire system could make air pumps
obsolete

Ben CoxworthAugust 12th, 2011

It's important to keep your tires sufficiently inflated, both for the sake of the tires themselves, and in
order to maximize the performance and fuel economy of your vehicle. The problem is that for many
of us, we only think to check our tire pressure when heading out on a long road trip - if even then.
With Goodyear's Air Maintenance Technology (AMT), however, that shouldn't matter. The system,
which is currently in development, would automatically keep tires topped up to the proper pressure.

All of the electronic and mechanical components would be contained within the tires themselves,
running off of power generated by the tires' rolling motion. AMT would monitor each tire's air
pressure, and use a miniature pump to draw in air as needed. Goodyear hasn't stated whether the
system could also expel air, to keep hot tires from becoming overinflated.

There's also no word on when AMT might be commercially available, although the company said
that research has been accelerated due to two grants - this week, the United States Department of
Energy's Office of Vehicle Technology awarded Goodyear US$1.5 million to develop AMT for
commercial truck tires, while the government of Luxembourg provided a grant for development of
consumer tires, last month.

While there have been self-inflating tire systems before, most of these have not been fully contained
within the tire, let alone powered by it. One exception is CODA DEVELOPMENT's SIT system, that
uses a built-in peristaltic pump to continuously keep tires from getting soft.

Brilliant Auto-Inflating Tires Pump
Themselves Up As They Roll

Andrew Liszewski

This Air Maintenance Technology system will automatically keeps a tire at the
proper PSI using a self-contained passive pump. Auto-inflation systems for tires have
usually involve complicated valves and tubing to connect each tire to a pump in the
vehicle itself. Goodyear's solution is far more elegant, using an internal regulator that
automatically opens, when tire pressure is low, to let air in to a pumping tube. As the
tire rolls and is deformed, the air inside this tube is squeezed into the tire's main cavity,
pumping it back up. Because the system is completely self-contained, there's less risk of
the components being damaged, and fewer ways for the mechanism to fail.

Development of a valve and optimization of a tube for
self-inflating tire

International Journal of Automotive Technology

December 2017, Volume 18, Issue 6, pp 973–981

ABSTRACT
Worldwide, the tire market requires safe and eco-friendly tires. In this study, a
self-inflating tire (SIT) was studied and manufactured. Self-inflating tire refers
to a technique for maintaining appropriate tire pressure. An internal regulator
senses when tire inflation pressure has dropped below the set air pressure. The
tire boosts air through the valve when rolling and compressed air enters into the
tire. This procedure keeps the tire air pressure at an appropriate level and
increases tire safety. In this study, a regulator was used as a negative-pressure
system. A check valve was selected the minute flow check valve depending on
the shape of the configured system. In addition, the material of the tube was
developed with excellent physical properties and resistances (elastic rebound,
working temperature, etc.) owing to its complete compression and restoration.
A tube performance tester was developed and a computer aided engineering
(CAE) model was modeled for comparison with the test results. Using the tester
and model, it was possible to optimize the shape of the tube and regulator.
Finally, the reliability of the study was verified through the prototype test. The
developed equipment and systems can be used for the manufacture of high-
performance and safe tires.

A Review On Currently Available Different Self-Inflating Tyre Systems
In Commercial Vehicles

Keywords: Pressure, Safety, Environmental, Mileage, Self-inflating

Abstract
Earlier performed studies that show that a drop in tyre pressure by a few PSI may
result in the reduction of mileage, tyre life, safety, and vehicle performance. Self-
inflating tyre system ensures that tyres are properly inflated at all times. With the
increasing prices of oil and growing concern of environmental issues, this system
addresses a potential improvement in gas mileage. Thus in this paper, we
reviewed the all available self-inflating tyre systems that are used nowadays in
commercial vehicles.

Automatic Tire Pressure Controlling and Self Inflating System: A Review

Abstract

Tire is the most essential part of automobile and it plays crucial role in ensuring safe driving. Even then,
almost every automobile on the road run with either one or more under inflated tires. Detailed survey
has come with result that drop in tire pressure by just few psi leads to the reduction in gas mileage, tire
life ,safe driving and vehicle performance. Unawareness of exact pressure requirement, sudden
environmental changes are also some of causes for tire running with improper pressure .Automatic tire
pressure controlling and selfinflating system ensures correct pressure in the tire all the time. Drop in
pressure is detected by hissing sound made by tire and system will starts refilling the tire automatically
according to the requirement of the tire. This system is named automatic because it checks the tire
pressure constantly using pressure gauge and accordingly gives alert signals to the driver. Aim of this
project is to stabilize all automobile tires with ideal pressure, make system absolutely automatic,
achieve satisfactory fuel efficiency, construct an affordable system, increase tire life and reduce accident
rate has been achieved by installing the system in vehicle.
