IMPACT TESTING
OBJECTIVES:
The aim of this experiment is to use Impact Testing machines to detemine the Toughness and
Ductility of prepared specimens and to examine and evaluate the test result.
INTRODUCTION:
Impact Testing is ideal for small structures, especially when boundary conditions are
seriously disturbed by shaker attachment. While it requires minimum test preparation time,
data harvesting is a tedious process. LMS Test.Lab provides a complete modal testing
solution from measuring frequency responses to performing modal analysis using impact
hammer frequency response function measurements for simultaneous response channels.
The Charpy impact test, also known as the Charpy v-notch test, is a standardized high
strain-rate test which determines the amount of energy absorbed by a material during fracture.
This absorbed energy is a measure of a given material's toughness and acts as a tool to study
temperature-dependent brittle-ductile transition. It is widely applied in industry, since it is
easy to prepare and conduct and results can be obtained quickly and cheaply. But a major
disadvantage is that all results are only comparative. Today it is used in many industries for
testing building and construction materials used in the construction of pressure vessels,
bridges and to see how storms will affect materials used in building.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT:
PROCEDURE:
1. The specimen is put into the charpy with base ‘u’ notched.
2. The specimen is fixed in a place at both ends with notched side the striker.
3. The striker sis release and impact the test piece immediately behind a machined notch.
1. The specimen is put into the izod with base ‘v’ notched.
2. The specimen is clamped into the pendulum impact test fixture with notched side
facing the striking edge of the pendulum.
