SKRAĆENA VERZIJA LEKCIJA

Good afternoon everbody! My name is Zoran Drageljevic and today I will talk to you about
some terms in tourism. Lets start.

First unit talks about tourism generally. For example what is tourism and what kind of sectors
in tourism we have. For the World Tourism Organisation tourism comprises the activites of
persons travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environment. Also, for the WTO
there are three key criteria which determine a trip like tourism. They are: displacement,
purpose and duration. We have few different sectors in tourism: tourist attractions, transport,
accomodation and catering, tour operators, public sector of tourism and retail – travel agents
and online.

In the second unit we talk about world destinations. We can classify destinations in two ways,
natural or habit. Therefore we divide the destinations on: natural destinations, built
destinations, mass markets, upmarkets and niche markets. Is it a destination visited or not,
depends on climate, location and attractions. Also, we have domestic tourism and inbound
tourism. Domestic occurs when tourists visit places in their own country. On the other hand,
inbound tourism occurs when tourists arriving in a destination from another country. The
main tourism generators today are Germany, Italy, Canada, U.K., France and USA. Also
USA, Spain, France, Italy are the top tourism earners.

Further, in third unit we have tour operator who bring together transport, transfers, meals,
accomodation and other in package holiday. They buy components from the principals – hotel
companies, airlines and so on. Here we have wholesalers who represent companies that buy in
large quantities and sell to make a profit. Advantages of package holidays are cheapness and
carelessness. We have four type of tour operators: mass market tour operators, domestic tour
operators, specialist tour operators and inbound tour operators. The German TUI AG is
currently the worlds largest travel group. And for the end , tourist operation is really risky
business because of the world instability.

Then, in fourth unit we talk about tourist motivation. We have few reasons for travelling and
they are: leisure tourism ( we are going on holiday because of pleasure and resting), business
tourism ( the word itself says), and visiting friends and relatives. We also have two new
concepts: tourist motivation which is cause why people travel, and tourist berhaviour which
shows is the way how people act when they travel.

Fifth unit talks about travel agencies. Travel agencies are retailers who sell tourism product to
the public. Typical product are: package holidays, air, train and coach tickets, travellers
cheques and insurance. Services involve: guiding and advising customers about product,
giving advice about visa and passport applications, planning travel itinerariers and costs and
representing a client in a complaint procedure after an unsatisfactory holiday. Consultant in
travel agency must have: a very wide knowledge of geography, computer skills, excellent
personal skills, detailed knowledge of the products the agency offers and so on. The ammount
of commision varies, from 1% for travellers cheques to the 40 % for travellers insurance.

Sixth unit talks about transport in tourism. It is one of the six subsectors of the tourism
industry. We divided it into three stages: surface transport (train, bus, car, motorbike.) , water
borne transport ( yacht, motorboat, cruise ship, ferry..) and air transport ( helicopter, light
aircraft, jet aircraft). Each of that modes fulfills one of three functions: travel to and from the
destination, local transport to destination and transport as a turist attraction. Tourism transport
can be scheduled and charter. Scheduled operates on regular basis, but charter operates only
to a specific destination on a specific date.

Next unit, seventh, talks about accomodation. We can classified it in: serviced acommodation
like hotzels and motels, guest houses, and self catering accomodation like apartments,
campsites, caravans, villas and motorhomes. Hotels are most popular of them and they are
divided into several groups. Reservations for hotels can ber taken in few ways: face to face in
the hotel, by phone, e mail, fax or writing a conventional letter, through Internet or travel
agent. Its seems that Internet booking are increasingly common.

Eighth unit talks about marketing and promotion. Marketing purpose is to ensure that the right
product is created and made available to the right people. There we have SWOT ANALYSYS
that is very important. Using it managers can create a product that is better than that of their
competitors. swot analysis consists of: strenghts, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. We
also have a marketing mix which consists of product, price, promotion and place.

In ninth unit we talk about the arline industry. We divided it into: traditional airlines and low
coast airlines. Also we have scheduled flights which operate on specific route at fixed time and
charter flights which run on a route and time choseb by the company or person that hires an
aircraft.

Further, tenth unit talks about holidays with a difference. In this unit we talking about how
there are different types of offer, somewhat for everyone. For example holiday for lovers of
adventure and action, those who love history and more.

In eleventh unit we have reservations and sales. It includes booking procedure. Tourism
professionals refer to: computer reservation system, global distribution system and gateways.
Computer reservation systems were originated in the 1950s and were restricted to internal use
in airlines. The first was SABRE. Seeing its value, the airlines opened up their systems to
other airlines and travel agencies. Next, global distribution system have begun to carry a wide
range of tourism product and services. And the gateways which are the special computer
programms are acessed to the public through the Internet.

And last unit, twelfth talks about airport departures. Today's airport ports offer different
services to their clients. From food to small stores that sell different products. Also air
passengers rights documents cover among others four basic situations:
1. Denied boarding – usually because of overbooking. That is because companies sells
more seats than they are in aircraft.
2. Cancellation
3. Long delays
4. Lost or damaged baggage

What is interesting that in US are not required to give compensation for flights that are
delayed or cancelled.
