AIDS Wasting Syndrome

Chronic Disease Description - AIDS
—  Acquired Immune Deficiency
Syndrome (AIDS)
—  Referred to as advanced
HIV infection with a
particular set of symptoms
—  Main Cause à poor
adherence to Antiretroviral
Therapy

—  Diagnosis
—  CD4 count <200
—  Viral load is detectable
(>40-75 copies/ml)
—  Number of HIV virus
particles in a milliliter
of the blood

AIDS - Symptoms
—  Immune system is too weak to fight off infections

—  AIDS-Defining Symptoms
—  Rapid weight loss
—  Chronic diarrhea (>1 week)
—  Night sweats/fever
—  Extreme tiredness
—  Persistent cough
—  Sores of the mouth, anus, or genitals
—  Prolonged swelling of the lymph
glands in armpits, groin, or neck

Wasting Syndrome
—  AIDS Wasting Syndrome – involuntary loss of >10% of
body weight with symptoms of diarrhea, or weakness and
fever for more than 30 days.

—  Factors that contribute to wasting:


—  Low food intake
—  Poor nutrient absorption
—  Altered metabolism
Comorbidities
—  Prediabetes
—  Risk factor for future type II diabetes and cardiovascular
disease
—  A1C: 5.7%-6.4%

—  High Triglycerides
—  Increased risk of heart disease
