Solve each of the following simultaneous linear

equations using the substitution method

2x + y = 4
y+ 4x = 12
 2x + y = 4 eq. 1
y + 4x = 12 eq. 2
From eq. 1
2x + y = 4 ……….eq.1

y = 4 – 2x eq. 3
Substitute eq.3 into eq.2

y + 4x = 12 ………….eq.2

( 4 – 2x ) + 4x = 12
- 2x + 4x = 12 - 4
2x = 8
x=8

Substitute x = 4 in equation (1)

When x = 4

2x + y = 4

2(4) + y = 4

8+y=4

y=4-8

From eq. 2
y + 3x = 7 ……….eq.2

y = 7 – 3x eq. 3
Substitute eq.3 into eq.1

3x + 14 - 6x = 2
14 – 2 = 6x – 3x
12 = 3x
