Choose:
One card that captures something about how you
thought and acted at that time. Write the card number

• A model of adult development per constructive-
developmental theory / research / practice (aka integral,
stage or vertical). The theory can remain in the
background while using this tool.
• Aligned with CCL leadership culture and vertical
development models.
Adult Development
1. Children develop in steps or “stages” (Piaget)
2. Adults also develop in stages (Kohlberg, Kegan,
Torbert, Cook-Greuter, Wilber)
3. Adults become more mature as they “grow up” and
develop “bigger minds.”
4. Stages of development shape how we think and act –
these are our action logics.
5. There are (at least) 7 transformations possible in
adulthood.

Development =
Horizontal + Vertical
There are really two types of leadership development:
horizontal and vertical.

Horizontal Development Vertical Development refers to

knowledge, skills, and act in more complex, systemic, and
