Dear Ms. Dell,

RE: Deliverable 1 COGO, Object Classification and Map Standards for GISC 9315 CAD and GIS.

Please accept this letter as my formal submission of Deliverable 1 COGO, Object Classification and Map
Standards. A new subdivision development plan of Francesco Crescent was mapped to an existing parcel
land base for the city of St. Catharines and is provided in the following document. A single line road
network with object data containing address information was also created. The updated drawing was
completed in a ready state for exporting to other GIS formats.
The purpose of deliverable 1 was to gain an understanding and demonstrated ability in COGO, annotation,
object classification definition files, creating and assigning object classes, drawing cleanup and layout
standards. This was achieved through use of Autodesk’s AutoCAD Map 3D program. Using these
techniques, a resulting map of the subdivision and a technical memorandum detailing the methodology,
metadata and findings is enclosed.
Completion of the documents demonstrated three different blocks are to be developed with 7 houses on
block 1 and block 2, along Francesco Crescent. The provided map was completed to the map and attribute
data standards.
Should you have any concerns regarding the enclosed documents or if there are any questions please contact
me at your convenience via e-mail at winona.drouin@gmail.com or phone at (905)932-4534. I look forward
to hearing from you.
Warm Regards,

Winona Drouin, B.Sc.

RE: Deliverable 1 COGO, Object Classification and Map Standards for GISC 9315 CAD and GIS,

1.0 Introduction

Using Autodesk’s AutoCAD Map 3D, a new subdivision development was added to an existing parcel land
base for the City of St. Catharines. Three different blocks were designated in the parcel land base that house
new residential developments. A single line road network was created throughout the development that
contains object data for address information. Given this information, a map of the development was created
with recommended residential housing locations. The residential development data has been corrected to
fit the respective coordinate system. A base drawing was initially provided and using the subdivision plan
the new residential development was graphed displaying the new parcel. Lastly, the updated drawing is in
a ready state to export to other GIS formats.

The purpose of completing the assignment is to gain and understanding and practice in COGO, annotation,
creating object classification definition files, assigning object classes, drawing cleanup and ability to create
a standardized layout. This was achieved through completion of an AutoCAD drawing and associated
definition XML file. The AutoCAD drawing and attribute road data were held to specific map standards
outlined in the GISC 9315 Deliverable 1 terms-of-reference.

The following technical memorandum details the methodology involved, data standards, metadata and any
results & conclusions found. Lastly, any issues during completion of the deliverable will be discussed.

2.0 Methodology

To begin with the deliverable a base drawing of the subdivision was imported into AutoCAD and the
coordinate system provided was used. Using the provided subdivision plan benchmark locations were
identified and the new parcel subdivision was drawn in using the COGO function with the line tool. Line
segments with directions for the three blocks were inputted as outlined in the subdivision plan.
When creating the single street line network a definition file (XML document) was created for the attribute
data. This was created so that the street lines contain properties or layer specific attributes such as colour
and line thickness. A definition file with the following object data fields was created: street, from left, to
left, from right, to right, direction, type, street name, suffix, unique ID and date created. The definition file
was then attached to the layer containing the street line network. Attributes were updated for street line
network as they were digitized on the subdivision map.

Once the streets were digitized, 3 new layers were created containing the annotation for street names,
address numbers and lot numbers. Dynamic annotation was used to label the street name and static
annotation was used for house and lot numbers. An annotation template was used to standardize the labels
within each layer. To complete the labelling for addresses, drawing cleanup was used and centroids were
inserted.

After annotation was completed the map was inputted and formatted to a workable layout document.

3.0 Data Standards

The following document was completed to specific standards outlined in the terms-of-reference. Table 1
shows the attribute data standard for the street single line layer:

5.0 Findings

The addition of the new subdivision plan on top of the base drawing allowed for accurate representation of
the subdivision location and block structure. Figure 1 displays the new subdivision parcel map created.
Aspects of the map were standardized to create a uniform layout. Lot numbers, house numbers, streets and
parcel layers were formatted to the standard mentioned in the terms-of-reference. All attribute data was also
standardized as per the terms-of-reference.

Many issues arose when completing the following deliverable within Autodesk’s AutoCAD Map 3D. The
program was not as user friendly as other mapping programs such as ArcGIS. Since the program was
entirely new to the consultant, there was some trial and error when digitizing the new parcel and creating
the map layout. Although the program was not very user friendly, it did produce a clean, uniform map of
the new subdivision. This process can be replicated when producing maps for other new subdivisions or
parcels onto an existing base map.

Based on this information, we can conclude that the new subdivision parcel will contain 3 blocks with
houses focusing along Franchesco Crescent in block 1 and 2. Lastly, AutoCAD can be a useful product
for creating simple maps displaying spatial data.
