BRONZE MEDALLION SYLLABUS


OBJECTIVE : This is the basic test of a qualified lifesaver who must show acceptable
standars of knowledge, judgment and physical ability
AGE LIMIT : 14 years and above
EXAMINER : One LSSM Grade 2 Examiner
DRESS CODE : Candidate & Subject - Swimwear
Men (long sleeved shirt, trousers)
Ladies (Blouse, skirt or slack)
AWARD : 1. An engraved Bronze Medallion and a certificate or
2. Item 1 plus ILS (International Lifesaving Idenification Card)

COURSE CONTENT

1. Water Safety & Assessment on an Emergency Situation


1.1 Answer 6 questions on Water Safety and principles and method of rescue
1.2 Examiner will present a typical open water emergence. Candidate should explain the
action he would take

2. Resuscitation
Successfully complete the examination for the resuscitation award
3. Water Test
3.1 This test represent a situation where a non-swimmer has slipped and fallen into the
water. The casualty will be in deep water, 2 meter from the side. Using an article or
clothing, demonstrate a reaching rescue and instruct him how to climb out

3.2 A non-swimmer is in difficulty 10 metres away in deep water. Demonstrate a


throwing rescue using an unweighter rope and secure the casualty in a position of
safety. A time limit of 1 minute shall apply, commencing with an uncoiled and
untangled ropy lying on the ground at the feet of the rescuer, and ending when the
end of the rope has reached casualty

3.3 Fully clothed, enter shallow water as for unknown conditions, swim 20m to the
subject and demonstrate ‘the reverse’ calm, reassure and approach the subject from
behind. Tow for 20m by the cross chest tow and assist the subject from the water

3.4 Entry with towing aid, swim for 50m, 50m tow, support position
Time: 3 minutes

3.5 Enter shallow water and swim 20m. Submerge & search underwater for 5m to
recover an aobject (2-4kg) from a depth of at least 1.8m
Demonstrate feet first and head-first surface dives
Exchange the object for a subject considered to be unconscious and not breathing,
tow to the nearest point of support in deep water and demonstrate mouth-to-nose
resuscitation for 3 cycles
Continue the tow to water shallow enough to stand in and demonstrate mouth-to-
nose resuscitation while walking the subject at least 5m to the side
Land the subject considered to be unconscious but breathing and place in recovery
position

3.6 A non-swimmer is in difficulty in deep water, 50m from a point of entry into deep
water. No aids are available. Enter the water with a straddle jump and swim 50m and
rescue over 50m by means of a chin tow, which will include a demonstration of the
methods used to restrain the struggling casualty
On completion of the tow support the casualty, and on the examiner’s signal him to
land

3.7 To demonstrate the action that might have to be taken in an unexpected situation,
for example in a crowded swimming pool, the candidate will demonstrate released
from 3 types of clutch as directed by the Examiner

3. Water Test

3.1 Swimming (on front only)


3.1.1 Speed (100m in less than 1min 40secs)
3.1.2 Endurance (300m with fins in less than 4min 30secs) or
3.1.3 Endurance (300m without fins in less than 6mins)

3.2 Reaching rescue: This tests represents a situation where a non-swimmer has slipped
and fallen into the water. The casualty will be in deep water, 2m from the side. Using
an article of clothing, demonstrate a reaching rescue and instruct him how to climb
out

3.3 Throwing Rescue: A non-swimmer is in difficulty 10m away in deep water.


Demonstrate a throwing rescue using an unweighted rope & secure the casualty in a
position of safety. A time limit of 1 minute shall apply, commencing with an uncoiled
and untangled ropy lying on the ground at the feet of the rescuer, and ending when
the end of the rope has reached casualty

3.4 Cross Chest Tow: Fully clothed, enter shallow water and swim 20m to the subject.
Demonstrate the reverse and calm-reassure-and approach the subject from behind.
Tow for 20m by cross chest tow and assist the subject to land

3.5 Towing with an aid: A conscious non-swimmer is in difficulty in deep water 50m away. A non-
rigid, non-buoyant aid is available. Taking the aid, enter deep water, swim 50m and tow the
casualty 50 to end in deep water.
Time : Men (3 minutes)
: Ladies (3 min 15secs)

3.6 Combined Rescue: Enter shallow water and swim 20m. Submerge and search underwater for
5m to recover an object (4jg) from a depth of at least 1.8m. During the search, demonstrate a
feet-first and head-first surface dives. Exchange the object for a subject considered to be
unconscious and not breathing, tow to the nearest point of support in deep water and
demonstrate mouth-to-nose resuscitation for 3 cycles. Tow the casualty to shallow water and
continue EAR for 5m. Land the casualty and place him in the recovery position

3.7 A non-swimmer is in difficulty in deep water, 50m from a point of entry into deep water. No
aids are available. Enter the water with a straddle jump and swim 50m to the casualty. Apply a
defensive action and rescue over 50m, by means of a chin tow, which will include a
demonstration of the methods used to restrain the struggling casualty (a double restraints). On
completion of the tow support the casualty, and assist him to land

3.8 Releases: To demonstrate the action that might have to be taken in an unexpected situation,
for example in a crowded swimming pool, the candidate will demonstrate released from 3 types
of clutch as directed by the Examiner followed by towing the subject with 3 towing techniques
over 25m each

3.9 50m swim in 1min

4.0 Underwater swim: 25m underwater swim without breaking surface
