3. Method of Test
3 1 Eccentricity of Pipe
Use vernier calipers, with the accuracy of 0.1 mm as specified
ỉn CNS 4175, Vernier Calipers, to measure the maximum and
minimum outside diameters, and calculate according to the
following formula:

Di - Ũ2
Eccentricity (%) = ----------- X 100
(Di + Da)/2
Where, Di: Maximum outside diame ter of pipe
D : Minimum outside diameter of pipe
2

3.2 Tensile strength

3.2.1 Mark the gauge points on the center part of the specimen, for
pipe of nominal size below 27, distance between the two
points shall be 12.5 mm; and for pipe of nominal size above
30, 17.5 mm apart. Measure the thickness between these
points with micrometer and calculate the cross section area
according to the following formula:

A = t x b

Where, A: Cross section area (cm2)

t: Minimum thickness (cm)
b: Length of chord of specimen (cm)

3.2.2 Place the specimen on the testing machine and pull with the
speed at 10 mm/min. Record the maximum load at break of the
specimen, take average figure of three specimens, and
calculate its tensile strength. Retest shall be done in the
case when any specimen is broken outside the gauge points.
The temperature during testing is 20±2°c.

Where, Ft: Tensile strength at t°c, MPa, (kgf/cm2 }
P: Maximum lead at break N (kgf)
A: Minimum cross section area of specimen (cm2 }
3.2.3 If the temperature during testing is not 20°c, the result
shall be corrected according to the following formula:

F = Ft + 6.65 X (t - 20)

A 4 (2 1 0 X 2 9 7 )m m

Where, F: Tensile strength at 20 °c ,MPa {kgf/cm2 }

Ft: Tensile strength at t°c ,MPa (kgf/cm2 }
t: Temperature during test (°C)

Remark: Suitable temperature range of the above mentioned formula

shall be between 5 and 35*c.

3.3 Hydrostatic Pressure Test

Fit the specimen on the testing machine, raise the hydrostatic
pressure up to the testing pressure as specified in Table 2,
maintain for 1 minute, and then, check for defects like
cracking and leakage. (Minor leakage from the connections of
both ends is out of the limit of this test. Retest should be
done.)

3.4 Compression Test

Lay the specimen between two flat metal plates, press it in the
direction perpendicular to its axis at the speed of 10 ± 2 mm
per minute, until the outside diameter is reduced to one-half
of its original. Examine visually its surface for any defects
like cracking and bursting.
3.5 Ash Content
Heat a 50 ml cleaned in a high temperature oven at 9 0 0 °c for
half an hour, take it out and cool in a desiccator to room
temperature, and weigh the mass of the crucible (A) exactly.
Put about 10 g of crushed sample in the crucible and weigh for
its mass (B) again exactly. Heat the crucible and sample
slowly until they are carbonized, remove to a high temperature
oven (with the crucible cover opened about 1 / 3 ) , heat up to
900°c and maintain for 3 hours, transfer into a desiccator to
cool to room temperature and then, weigh for its mass (C).

Ash content (%) = -------- X 100
B - A
3.6 Immersion Test
After the specimen is weighed, immerse it in the testing
solution as specified in Para. 3.8 of CNS 1298, keep at 60 ±
2°c for 5 hours take it out and rinse with water for 5 seconds
(specimen immersed in distilled water needs no rinsing), wipe
out the water on the surface and weigh again for its mass.
Calculate the change of mass according to the formula and take
the average value.
