FLC3JSP: JAPANESE LANGUAGE AND

CULTURE 3 日本の言語と文化 3

1. Course Description

This course aims to bring students to the latter half of the elementary level study of Japanese language
through a review and reinforcement of previous knowledge acquired from FLC1JSP and FLC2JSP. Students
who finish this course can take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test N5.

2. Course Objective

This course aims to help students acquire further proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing
Japanese. It also aims to provide students with a solid understanding of basic grammatical structures in
Japanese. Coverage includes Lessons 11-15 of the textbook Genki, and approximately 78 more kanji.

This course is a continuation of FLC1JSP. Students will expand knowledge and competence in Japanese language
culture at an elementary level. In the end of the course, students are expected to be able to do the following:

Communication
1) Understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in
work, school, leisure, etc.
2) Deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
3) Produce simple connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest
4) Describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and
explanations for opinions and plans.

Culture
1) Recognize distinctive products and practices of Japanese culture
2) Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and practices and the
perspectives (attitudes, values and beliefs) of Japanese culture.
3) Demonstrate the understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures
studied and their own.

3. Course Outline and Timeframe

The course discusses the contents from Lesson 11 to 15 of the textbook (Banno, Eri, Yutaka Ohno, Yoko
Sakane and Chikako Shinagawa.Genki: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese I and II. Tokyo: The
Japan Times, 2011).

1) A listening quiz will be given in the end of a chapter.


2) Speaking tests are the oral presentation by pair. The group of two makes a dialogue according to the
Can-Do Goals and presents it. Dates of speaking tests are indicated in the timeframe (#3).
3) Writing Practices are homework.
4) The submission of worksheets will be part of the course requirements.

Speaking test criteria


1 Can-DO (See Can-Do Goals in Course Outline and Timetable)
2 Vocabulary Has a vocabulary repertoire of isolated words and phrases related to particular
range concrete situations.
3 Phonological Pronunciation of a repertoire of learnt words and phrases can be understood
control without effort by native speakers used to dealing with speakers of his/her
language group.
4 Spoken fluency Can manage packaged utterances, without much pausing to search for
expressions, to articulate less familiar words, and to repair communication.
5 Grammatical Shows control of grammatical structures and sentence patterns in a learnt
accuracy repertoire.
6 Coherence and Can link groups of words or sentences with linear connectors like "and" or
cohesion "then".
7 Thematic Can interact in such a simple way that communication is dependent on minimal
development repetition at a normal rate of speech, rephrasing and repair. Can ask and answer
questions, initiate and respond to statements in areas of immediate need or on
familiar topics.

Cultural activity criteria
Oral presentation
1 Accuracy of information The information and content of the presentation is correct.
2 Evidence of library work Cross reference of scholarly sources is required.
3 Clarity of discussion points The discussion is not the presentation of information but has
research questions and discussion points.
4 Thematic development of The presentation is organized to discuss the group’s research
presentation questions and points.
5 Participation Should include a hands-on activity.

8. Classroom Policies

1) The requirements should be submitted as scheduled.


2) Make-up tests of listening and speaking will not be given if the student is absent on the day of the test.
3) Cellular phones should be off or in the silence/vibration mode in the classroom.
4) Penalties for being late or absent follow the school regulations.

9. Consultation Hours

Daily 12:30-13:30 at the Japanese Studies Program, 2nd floor, Leong Hall, or by appointment.
