Already, yet, still, just, no longer, not any longer, no more, not any

more.

We use just, already and yet with the present perfect. Usiamo already e yet con il
present perfect.

1. Already
Already is used to say something happened before now. Already usually goes
before the main verb. Already è usato per dire che qualcosa è già accaduto. Va di
solito prima del verbo principale.

"I've already done my homework. Can I go out?" Ho già fatto I compiti. Posso
uscire?

2. Yet
Yet is used to say something has not happened, but is going to. Yet usually goes at
the end of a sentence. It is most common in negative statements and questions.
Yet si usa per affermare che qualcosa non è ancora accaduto, va in fondo alla frase.
È usato in frasi negative e interrogative.
I haven't visited New York yet. But I'm going to. Non ho ancora visitato New York,
ma lo farò.
It isn’t raining yet. Non sta ancora piovendo.
The research has not been completed yet. La ricerca non è ancora stata
completata.

3. Still
Still is used to talk about things that have (or haven’t) happened over time. Still is
used mainly to refer to something that began in the past and is continuing into the
present. It is most common in affirmative statements and questions. Still si usa per
parlare di cose che sono o non sono successe. Still si usa principalmente per
indicare qualcosa che inizia nel passato e continua nel presente. Si usa soprattutto
in frasi affermative e interrogative:
He still lives abroad. Lui ancora vive all’estero.
It’s still snowing! Sta ancora nevicando.
Do you still want to come over for dinner? Vuoi ancora venire a cena?

4. Yet and Still

Both yet and still can be used in negative statements to talk about something that
wasn’t true in the past and continues not to be true in the present. Entrambi yet e
still vengono usati in frasi negative per dire che qualcosa non era vero in passato e
che non è ancora vero in presente.
She hasn’t arrived yet. Lei non è ancora arrivata.
She still hasn’t arrived. Lei ancora non è arrivata.
The reasons haven’t become clear yet. Le ragioni non sono ancora chiare.
The reasons still haven’t become clear. Le ragioni ancora non sono chiare.

I’ve been waiting for over an hour and the bus still hasn’t come. Aspetto
l’autobus da oltre un’ora e ancora non è arrivato.
You promised to give me that report yesterday and you still haven’t finished it.

Notice that yet is usually placed at the end of the sentence, and still is placed
before the verb. In addition, still include a sense of impatience that the sentences
with yet do not have. È da notare che yet va in fondo alla frase, mentre still si
colloca prima del verbo. Inoltre, still include un’enfasi, un senso di impazienza che
yet non ha.

5. Just
Just is a short time ago. Just usually goes before the main verb. Just indica
qualcosa appena accaduta, va prima del verbo principale.

I’ve just seen Susan coming out of the cinema.
Mike’s just called. Can you ring him back please?
Have you just taken my pen? Where has it gone?

6. No longer or not any longer

We use no longer or not any longer to talk about the end of an action or state. No
longer is more formal. Si usa no longer or not any longer per parlare della fine di
un’azione o di una condizione. No longer è più formale.
She no longer wears black, but grey and white, now. Lei non indossa più il nero,
ma il grigio e il bianco adesso
He's no longer in charge, I am! Lui non è più il responsabile, adesso lo sono io!

No longer often comes in the normal mid position for adverbs (between the
subject and main verb, or after the modal verb or first auxiliary verb, or after be as a
main verb). No longer è spesso usato posizionandolo secondo le regole
dell’avverbio (1. tra il soggetto e il verbo principale; 2. dopo il verbo modale; 3. dopo
il primo verbo ausiliare; 4. dopo il verbo essere in funzione di verbo principale)

She no longer wears the dull colours, now she dresses in bright, fashionable
clothes. Lei non indossa più quei colori cupi, adesso indossa colori sgargianti alla
moda.

No longer or not any longer are the opposite of still. No longer or not any
longer hanno significato opposto a still.

We use Not any longer as a response on its own. We don’t use No longer as a
response on its own. Not any longer viene utilizzato nelle risposte secche, non può
essere usato no longer.
Are you still working in York? Not any longer. Not: No longer. or No, not still.

7. No more and not any more are determiners and adverbs. No more and not
any more possono avere funzione sia di determinante che di avverbio.

7.1 We use no more and not any more as determiners to talk about an absence
of something. No more is more formal than not any more. Si usa no more e not
any more per parlare dell’assenza o mancanza di qualcosa. No more è più formale.
Would you like any more tea?
I want no more tea. (formal). Non voglio altro tè.
I don’t want any more tea. (informal)
There’s no more tea. (or There isn’t any more tea.) Non c’è più tè.

7.2 We use no more and not any more as adverbs to talk about something
stopping or ending. No more is more formal than not any more. Si usa no more e
not any more per dire che qualcosa non si fa più.
We don’t go to Scotland on holiday any more. Non andiamo più in vacanze in
Scozia.

7.3 In American English, any more, as an adverb, can be written as one word,
anymore. Nell’inglese americano any more, in funzione di avverbio, si può scrivere
come una parola sola (anymore)
He doesn’t cycle anymore.
I’m not cold any more. (or I’m not cold anymore.)
