Instructions to the Examiner

1. Group students into groups of 5.

2. Instructions and guideline on project are to be given to students in Week 3 to

Week 4.

3. Students are advised to plan the fieldwork for their project during the Mid-
Semester break in order to give them sufficient time.

4. To present the project, a duration of 15 minutes is allocated for each group,

followed by 5 minutes of ‘question & answer’.

5. A copy of the raw interview and slideshow must be submitted in a compact disc
during the presentation week together with all consent forms used in the
interview and transcript of the interview.

1. GUIDELINE FOR INTERVIEW SESSION

No. of Students will work in a group of five (5). Each student needs to take part in the interview
student process.
Each group needs to search for 5 foreign speakers to be interviewed (They can be either
Subject. native speakers of English or second language speakers of English.)

Note: Students are allowed to interview international students as their respondents as long as
the latter is not from their own class. However, students are encouraged to go out to the real
world to seek for their respondents.
The interview should include the following items:
Content
1. Greeting & self-introduction
2. Respondent’s details
3. General questions – 7~10 WHQuestions
4. An issue - 7~10 WHQuestions
5. Closing

*For ethical reasons, Consent Form should be filled in by interviewees before the
interview session is conducted.
Duration 5 minutes for each respondent x 5 = 25 minutes.
Mode The interview must be video recorded. Make sure the voice in the recording is clear. The
video must be uploaded into the YouTube.

question about a water pollution. So, first what is your name?

Bhuthanashudi: Nice to meet you Mohd Azman. My name is Buthana Sudi.

Azman: Oh.

Bhuthanashudi: Yeah.

Azman: Okay. Aaa… Where are you from?

Bhuthanashudi: I am from Tanzania.

Azman: Tanzania, oh Tanzania where… where?

Bhuthanashudi: In eastern Africa.

Azman: Oh… Eastern Africa. Okay I see. Okay aaa… what are you doing aaa…

Bhuthanashudi: Yeah. I am taking a Bachelor of Software Engineering at UMS.

your perception about local people in here.
Bhuthanashudi: The local people here nice, thier are humble, polite. Yeah I like them very
good it feels like at home.

Azman: Alright. Okay aaa.. what is your religion? Aaa.. sorry.

Bhuthanashudi: Aaa… it’s okay I’m a Muslim.

Azman: Also… also. Same… same hahaha. So Do you like food in this country?

Bhuthanashudi:Yeah. But not many of them because I’m not try lot of them. But I like
Nasi goreng Ayam.

Bhuthanashudi: Umm… Let me say I’m not familiar enough. But in the few places that I
have been at, let’s say the Island where you can find the ocean. They seem clean to me not so
much polluted.

NAME: ANGEL(Suhaima)
Angel is a tourist from England who travels to Malaysia with her partner. They
are a couple who have recently graduated. My first view of Angel is a tourist
who has a friendly attitude. This is because at first when I asked permission
to interview, Angel without a long thought agreed to be interviewed. Even
Angel always gave us a smile. Angel and her partner are also sporting
travelers because when we want to take pictures with them, they are very happy
and take pictures together. Although Angel wanted to rush, but angel answered
the question given earnestly. This gave me more confidence to interview her.
Issues discussed are also common issues and are known to many p. Therefore,
Angel is easy to answer the question being questioned even though the question
is somewhat complicated and requires general knowledge.
NAME: ALEX(Suhaima)
Alex is a very friendly traveller. We met him in the market area. We saw him walking with his
friend. Actually they want to find a restourant. However, when we want to interview them. They
are also excited and want to be interviewed. We asked why came to sabah. They said to travel.
Additionally, they are very easy to answer every given question. They are also very good, for
allowing us to record them and also allow them to be uploaded on youtube.
NAME: NEYMARK( Hidaya)
Neymark is a very friendly person. First, I thought he didn’t want to do the interview but after we
approached him and asked nicely, he said okay and smile. Neymark has been very cooperative
with us by providing a very long and detailed answer. He like Sabah very much and want to
come again when he have another chance. When we do this interview, I realized that my skills
communication in English had been improved very much. Other than that, this interview also
made me more brave to talk in English and give me confident. The interview session also give
me a chance to work in group to do our project and give us memories.
NAME: MOGANA(Asikin)
What I can conclude through interviews, pollution happens according to where we are. For
example, water area maybe have potention pollution as there are waters such as oil mining or
shipping. Water pollution in sabah especially in the city, is not very bad because water pollution
occurs but can be handle it with by cleaning the area. Like we know, kota kinabalu famous
among tourist because so many beauty of islands, so this attraction is one of the reasons that the
area needs to be cleaned for tourist attractions. In the event of lack of tourists the possibility of
cleaning activities is not well done. I am a local resident feel the responsibility to deal with the
pollution problems that occur in my own country. The pollution can affect the image of the
country and this can have a negative impact on the country's own society. Kota Kinabalu is the
state center of Sabah. Kota Kinabalu is a local fascinated by the world. Therefore, pollution
should be addressed to prevent less tourist attraction. This is not only our country but also other
countries.
NAME: AZIZ MUMUY( Shahril)
The interview session has giving me a chance to doing something that I hav e never
experianced before. To talk directly with the foriegners from the other country. Even though at
first I feel a little bit nervous, but in the end it getting well. I think the experienced that I gained
has giving me the confident level to meet a new people from the other coutry to have some talk
with them. The interview session has given me a new experianced to work in a group to doing
our project and it will give us a good memory and give us a new knowledge to use in the
future.
NAME BHUTANAHSHUDI(Azman)
The interview giving me a new confidence to have some discusson with foriegners. Even at first
it quite dificult for me to talking with Bhutanahshudi. It teach me how to gained the confidence
to make people feeling confortable with me. Even they don’t know me and my language are not
so good but it really helping me to build the confidance level.

TOPIC/ISSUE: WATER POLLUTION

SUMMARY
In conclusion, based on my interviews I found that not all societies are very sensitive to about
pollution because respondent do not know much about pollution but the visible pollution can be
commented by the respondents well. Based on the interviews, respondent said the pollution was
valid depending on where we were. This means that pollution occurs according to the condition
such as the water area will potentially suffer from water pollution and likewise with the airspace
likely the occurrence of air pollution due to the smoke released by the plane or aircrafts.
Pollution will also occur according to community activities such as housing construction or
potential development for pollution. Example, construction of houses in the water will cause
potential waste disposal activities to occur because one of the society's own attitude is not very
concerned about the fact that will happen. Every place will be polluted but it is up to the
responsible to manage the area. For example, through interviews, respondent said the areas
visited had been polluted but could be solved by clearing the area. In addition, respondents are
also of the opinion that visits from tourists are one of the reasons for cleaning activities to
continue. Without visitors or tourists cleaning activities are probably not well done because of
the lack of visitors and tourists.So the conclusion is that pollution can be solved in a variety of
ways, such as respondent quotes where tourism factor is one of the reason why pollution should
be avoided. Pollution also needs to be resolved by the local community and responsible to the
government. In addition, life in the sea also should be taken care of as it is
also one of the tourist attractions that are not owned in all places. Many
marine life will die if waste is not properly managed. This is because fish
will eat such trash as plastic which should not be eaten by fish because it
can cause the fish to die. The beauty of the sea-drawn scenery will also be
contaminated by these trashes and will spoil the sight of tourists who make
scuba diving. Therefore, all parties must take care to maintain our
cleanliness of the sea, it is always beautiful and clean that can attract many
tourists.
