Introduction/ Show this short video to students to get their brain ready for learning about the
Hook planets.
1. Explain to students what they’re going to do and that they need to get in to a
group of three.
2. When they get into their group, they’ll have the choice of doing research in
books, or on the computer. They will also take notes on what they learned
with an outlined paper given to them with questions they need to answer.
Once done they will go to the teacher to check their notes to see if they are
ready to move on to the project.
3. Once the students have done their research and their notes have been
checked by the teacher, one student from each group will come up to the
Instructional teachers desk and grab the supplies needed for their project. (nine styrofoam
Activities balls, paint, toothpicks, pipe cleaners, string, and colored paper.)
4. When the students go back to their seats they will talk with their group about
what ball matches what shape of what planet. They’ll get those in order then
call for a teacher to check and make sure everything is good.
5. The students will paint and decorate the planets according to what the planets
look like.
6. Once done, the students will vote on placing each planet on toothpicks and
putting them on the styrofoam base to hold the planets up, or they have the
choice of hanging the planets with the string.
