Other Applications of Newton’s Laws
Motion in the Presence of Resistive Forces
In Chapter 5, we described the force of kinetic friction, but
completely ignored any interaction between the object and
the medium through which it moves
Now we consider the effect of that medium, which can be
either a liquid or a gas
The medium exerts a resistive force on the object moving
through it, such as the air resistance and the viscous force
acting on objects moving through a liquid
The direction of the resistive force is always opposite to
the direction of the object’s motion relative to the medium
The magnitude of the resistive force can depend on speed in a
complex way, and here we consider only two simplified models
Model 1: Resistive Force Proportional to Object Velocity
, where b is a constant whose value depends on
the properties of the medium and on the shape
and dimensions of the object
Let us consider a free‐fall of a object in the medium
From this differential equation, the acceleration
becomes zero when the speed of sphere approaches
its terminal speed
Because in this case,
Mathematics: problem to solve the differential equation
Solutions when we set v=0 at t=0,
Check: take 1st derivative
Use a formula
Model 2: Resistive Force Proportional to Object Speed Squared
For objects moving at high speeds through air, such as an
airplane, skydivers, cars, and baseballs, the resistive force is
reasonably well modeled as proportional to the square of
the speed
drag coefficient
density of air
cross‐sectional area of the moving
object measured in a plane
perpendicular its velocity
Again, for a free‐falling, we have
We find the terminal speed as
For a free‐falling, we have
We find the terminal speed as

Exercise for 1st Exam
The Exam goes like this
1. (10 points each)
A block of mass M is accelerated along the incline by a force of magnitude
F , shown below. The frictional force on the block exerted by the surface
has magnitude f .
(A) What is the magnitude of the acceleration?
Answer: ________
(B) Which of the following ……. ?

(A) What is the magnitude of the acceleration?
Answer: ________
Some space
(B) What is ……..?
Now you try to find the solution to this problem
1. (10 points each)
A block of mass M is accelerated along the incline by a force of magnitude
F , shown below. The frictional force on the block exerted by the surface
has magnitude f .
You may draw free‐body diagram
(A) What is the magnitude of the acceleration?
Wrong!
Answer: __3_____
I do not know why you arrived at the wrong answer, but I
see the free diagram is correct and you were almost there
Æ give you, say, 5 points

Answer: ________
This space is to write your process
In the same way, you got a wrong answer, but the formulas
you showed space is correct, you may earn, say, 5 points.
