Acuson Confidential Overview

OVERVIEW
OBJECTIVES Given a list of assemblies, be able to identify and remove specific
assemblies. Replace the assemblies and ensure the system is
functional.

PURPOSE Taking the Aspen system apart and putting it back together is the
first step in learning how to service it. This module addresses basic
system architecture, printed circuit boards (PCBs), and FRU access
and removal.

CAUTION! Always use proper ESD protocols when working on any Aspen system
circuit boards or damage may occur.

INSTRUCTIONS Refer to the detailed instructions in this module as necessary.

1 Remove the side panel and sheet metal cover on the DIMAQ
workstation side of the system.
2 Remove the IOB and SVC boards.
3 Remove the side panel and sheet metal cover on the Scanner side of
the system.
4 Remove the ZDT and ZDL boards.

NOTE: If the system has a ZIP board, remove the ZIP instead of the ZDL.

5 Remove the PPS to allow access to remove the main power supply
(MDI).
6 Remove the system monitor.
7 Remove the user interface (UI) assembly.
8 Replace the assemblies and verify system operation.
9 Put the sheet metal covers on, but do not tighten the screws.
10 Leave the doors off.

Module 4 - Field Replaceable Units (FRUs) Acuson Confidential

FIELD REPLACEABLE UNITS (FRUS)

The design of the Aspen system is based on the use of modular,
functionally-isolated printed circuit boards (PCBs) and
subassemblies known as field replaceable units (FRUs). This
modularization greatly simplifies on-site service and repair. In most
cases, on-site maintenance is accomplished by removing and
replacing the PCBs or subassemblies.

NOTE: The PCBs used in the Aspen system are highly susceptible to ESD
damage. Always use proper ESD precautions when handling the PCBs
and always store them in an ESD-shielded container.

Figure 4-1 identifies parts of the Aspen system that are referred to
throughout this module. For additional information, ask the
Acuson instructor.

IDENTIFYING PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARDS (PCBS)

Printed circuit boards are identified by board type, version, and
revision level. The board type indicates the board’s major function.
The type is abbreviated into a two- or three-letter acronym, such as
VPB for the Video Processor Board.
Version numbers are used to distinguish significant design changes
of a board type. The new version is distinguished from the old by a
number appended to the three-letter type identifier. In the case of
VPB boards, the earlier boards were called VPB. Later changes
produced VPB2. All these versions are referred to generally as VPB
boards. Except when indicated, newer version boards may always
be used in place of older versions.
The type and version identifiers are etched in the board's copper
foil.
All changes that occur to a board or FRU are tracked and
documented by changes to the revision of the PCB Assembly. The
revision of a board is marked in indelible ink on the ejector tab of
each PCB assembly. Do not confuse the assembly revision with the
fab (bare board) revision marked in the copper etch of the board.
For non-PCB assemblies, the revision is stamped or labeled in a
visible location.
Aspen system production PCBs are marked as follows:
• XA, XB, XC: X-Alphabetic indicates an initial production
release.
• A, B, C: Alphabetic-only indicates a full production release.
An example of production revision numbering is shown below:
