TEMPLATE FOR ACTION RESEARCH
PARTS OF AN ACTION | KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER IN WRITING AN ACTION RESEARCH
RESEARC PROPOSAL | PROPOSAL
TITLE OF ACTION Integrate in the research title the primary purpose of the study and the
RESEARCH intervention to use in addressing the problem.
1 INTRODUCTION | The original source of the problem is discussed in this portion. Itis an
explanation of the circumstances which prompted the researcher to
pursue the study. Observed prevailing and existing conditions related to
| the problem should be clearly described to just the choice of he study
Statement of the | The specific objectives of the action research are presented in question
Problem form. They are arranged logically and are introduced using a
| paragraph that contains the primary purpose of the study.
Hypothesis It should be stated in a negative statement e.g. There is no significant
difference in the Grade 7 students’ level of performance in Math before
and after the implementation of Math Plus.
I BRIEF REVIEW OF | This part aims to present what has or has not been done on the problem
RELATED being investigated. It establishes the baseline data about the problem
LITERATURE AND | through a review of related readings/studies.
STUDIES
This part highlights the importance of the present study by presenting
the similarities and differences of the information read to the variables of
the present study. It provides a general picture of the research topic.
The “Related Literature" is an article written by an expert on the topic,
being investigated. It may be those statements published in books,
journals, periodicals or from electronic sources.
Brief discussion of the intervention program and its basis should be
| completely discussed in this part of action research.
‘The researcher can present what expert says about the topic and
contrasts the same to what another person says about. Discussion of
related readings should follow the sequence of the specific questions.
Whiting the related literature, the researchers should consider more
updated references particularly when the discussion is focused on
| innovations and continuous improvement.
|
Local literature should not be separated from foreign literature.
| "Author, Year" format should be followed in making citations e.g. (Merle,
| 2017),
_| Materials lifted from electronic sources whose authors are unknown arenot reliable. Hence, they should not be taken as reference for an action
research.
Only research findings and statements which are related in purpose,
methods or findings to the present study should be included in the
review.
Clarify the interrelationships of the studies reviewed and the present
study. Point weaknesses and strengths of each study reviewed.
Conflicting views of different authors and researchers should be linked
together.
The researcher should put together findings that are the same to avoid
duplication
Use appropriate transitional devices to keep ideas moving in orderly
from one paragraph to another.
Theoretical
Conceptual
Framework
or
The researcher may use a Theoretical Framework or Conceptual
Framework or both.
The Theoretical Framework consists of a synthesis of theories or
principles which are closely related to the study. It serves as the
theoretical backbone of the problem being investigated. It develops the
theoretical basis of the study. Hence, the researcher is expected to
discuss how the variables to be investigated interrelate with one
another.
Discussion of the study's framework, the researcher should follow the
sequence of the specific questions presented in the first part of the
action research format.
The study's framework should end with a research paradigm. This
research paradigm should be briefly described by the researcher.
Ill METHODOLOGY
This part includes the research design, research locale, research
Population and sample, data gathering procedure, research instrument,
and statistical treatment of data
Research Design
Research method which may be employed by the researcher should be
thoroughly discussed here. This means, the researcher has to begin the
discussion with a brief description of method to be used in the
completion of this study and how it will be utilized by the researcher in
the attainment of his action research objectives.
Research Locale
Descriptions of the research environment in relation to the focus of the
study should be clearly presented in this section. Valid reason for
choosing this particular research venue should be spelled out
Population
Sample
and
‘The description of the population and the selection of the samples and
the detailed description of the sampling procedure to be employed by
the researcher should be presented in this section. If the total population
included in the study, then the selection of samples is no longeressential
Research [The instrument to be used in data collection should be named and
Instrument described here. Discuss the framing and validation of data gathering
| instrument
| In the construction of the questionnaire, indicate how one is able to
| acquire knowledge and insights in devising it. Identify the parts of the |
instrument by stating what each part is all about.
The validation process should indicate what and how it is done.
For standardized instrument, it is sufficient to merely identify the
instrument to be used.
| Pretesting of the non-standardized instrument used in other studies and
| the researcher-made instrument is essential o establish the validity and
reliability of the instrument.
Before the final draft of the instrument is distributed to the respondents,
permission to administer the instruments should be sought.
Administration and retrieval of the instrument should be done by the |
researcher.
The other instrument to be used in the process of conducting the study
and reasons for utilizing them should be incorporated following the
acceptable format
Procedure
Data Gathering
This includes the researcher's detailed plan regarding the collection of
relevant data needed for the completion of the study.
It begins with seeking permission to conduct the study from the proper |
authorities.
Ethical considerations may also be discussed in this section of action
research,
Statistical
Treatment of Data
This portion of the research paper includes the statistical tools to be
employed in analyzing the data.
The formula is to be included.
Provide an introductory statement enumerating the statistical formulas
to be used. Indicate the statistical formulas for every specific problem.
The presentation of the statistical formulas must follow the order of the
‘specific problems in the “Statement of the Problem”,
Results
Discussions
and
This contains data analysis and interpretation following the sequence of
the specific questions. Relevant readings should be used to explain |
the study's results.
‘Summary
Findings
contains answers to specific questions presented in outline form.~~ Conclusions —
Recommendations
| This contains general statements about the findings
| This contains relevant suggestions (based on the research findings)
addressed to specific persons with the purpose of further improving the
Pprocess/system.
‘APPENDICES
This contains the intervention material or program prepared by the
research to address the problem presented in the action research.
Research instrument and letters relative to the making of the action
research should be placed in this section. Inclusion of statistical
calculations and researcher's curriculum vitae may also be included
here.
List of
References
Materials used as references for the completion of the study should be
presented in outlined form following the alphabetical order.
‘As regards the format, APA 6" edition format is recommended,
