A s most of you know, over the past five months
we have been diligently involved in a search
for a new Assistant to the Rector, following the
retirement of the Rev. Dr. Ruth E. Correll at the
end of 2017. That process included advertising
for the position, reviewing applicant résumés, and
conducting multiple interviews with short-listed
candidates - all with the goal of having the new
Assistant in place by early July.
After much work involving myself, an advisory
Search Committee, and the Vestry, I am pleased
to inform you of the successful conclusion of that
process: in the middle of May, I issued a call to the
Rev. Dr. Lynn P. Ronaldi, who joyfully accepted.
That call was in turn ratified by both Bp. John-
ston and Pohick’s Vestry, as per canonical require-
ments, allowing me to now share this wonderful
news with the entire congregation.
Lynn is currently serving as Rector of the
Church of the Incarnation in West Point, Missis-
sippi, having initially been appointed as Priest-in-
Charge three years earlier. Before that, she served
as Rector of Church of the Advent in Summer,
MS - he same congregation where Bp. Johnston
once similarly served near the start of his ordained
ministry.
Growing up near Memphis, Lynn’s early
spiritual life was formed in the Roman Catho-

lic Church, but her family began attending the
Episcopal Church when she was a teenager. After
graduating from Ole Miss with a B.A. in Jour-
nalism and Public Relations (and later from the
University of Dallas with an MBA), Lynn mar-
ried Tom Ronaldi, her college sweetheart, and
they eventually moved to Houston. They went on
to raise three daughters (Alley, Tori, and Carly),
who are now living on their own as young adults.
Through involvement in the Alpha Program
offered at her parish in Houston, Lynn was led
to a Lay Chaplain’s ministry in a Community of
Hope chapter that was then forming within her
congregation - one of the earliest in the nation.
She served in that and several other ministries for
nearly a decade prior to responding to a call to
ordained ministry.
Lynn’s ordination to the priesthood in 2013
followed her graduation from St. Mary’s Semi-
nary in Houston with an MDiv (2008), and her
completion of Anglican Studies coursework a few
years later at the Sewanee School of Theology.
She went on to earn her Doctor of Ministry from
the latter institution in 2016, with her doctoral
thesis proposing a practical model for the integra-
tion of Community of Hope spirituality within
the Clinical Pastoral Education system.
Her training, experience, and temperament
ideally suited to match the portfolio of minis-
tries supervised by Pohick’s Assistant to the Rec-
tor, Lynn will bring many spiritual insights and a

great deal of enthusiasm to the position.
And so, with that introduction, I hope you will join me in welcoming Lynn and Tom when she begins
her service with us the first week of July - her first Sunday being July 8th.
In the meantime, the Rev. Dr. Diane Murphy will continue her superb ministry with us for two Sun-
days and Wednesdays per month through June, including the weekend of our Shrine Mont parish retreat,
which will be her last.
Thank you all for your prayerful support throughout this entire process. And thanks most of all to our
Heavenly Father for leading us through this period of discernment to such a wonderful conclusion!

The annual parish retreat at Shrine Mont is June 22
through June 24. For those new to the parish or those
that have not had time to make new friends, this is a
great time for teens as well as adults to get to know
each other better. In addition to three breakout study
sessions, there is a pool, hiking, sports, and the ever fa-
mous ‘porching’!
During the three study sessions, teens in grades
4-12 will meet and explore the meaning of Christian
friendship and how it relates to their life. Study will
include scripture, questions, games, prayer and learning
about the faith. There will be two groups, grades 4-8
and 9-12, and each will dig into what it means to ex-
perience a faith friendship and how to share that with
others.
Spending time with each other for the weekend
helps spiritual growth and encourages support for oth-
ers in their spiritual life. Shrine Mont retreat center
provides the atmosphere to experience God in com-
munity with other Christians and to reflect on personal
relationships. Consider joining the fun for the weekend
and strengthen a personal relationship with Christ.
Cost for the weekend is $60 for youth/young adults
ages 4-21. Scholarships are available. Take a chance,

Special Declaration of Independence
Reading at Historic Pohick Church
On Wednesday, July 4, the congregation and
community are invited to a free public reading
of the Declaration of Independence at Histor-
ic Pohick Church. The Rev. Dr. Thomas Costa,
portraying the Rev. Mr. Massey, rector of Po-
hick Church in 1776 will conduct the read-
ing. The reading will take place at 12 noon,
with free docent tours
of the colonial church of
George Washington and
George Mason following

Shrine Mont Overview: It is that time again for fellowship, and physical, mental, and spiritual
renewal at Shrine Mont in the beautiful mountains of Virginia! Shrine Mont, located in Orkney
Springs, 13 miles west of Mt. Jackson, Virginia, is a conference center managed by the Episcopal
Diocese of Virginia. Shrine Mont consists of 1,100 acres of forest land featuring trails, lakes,
hills, and streams at the edge of George Washington National Forest, which is a stone’s throw
from the West Virginia state line. The centerpiece of Shrine Mont is an unusual open air stone
chapel, the Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration, from which Shrine Mont takes its name.
Campers, conferees, and guests worship at this beautiful shrine regularly.

Fees: The cost is $160 for adults (over 21), $60 for children, teens, and young adults (ages 4-21),
and free for children under four. If a crib is required, there is a $6 fee for the weekend. Babysit-

What to Bring: While breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided, bring snacks and a favorite beverages for evening fel-
lowship time together at the “Gathering Place.” Also, consider bringing a flashlight, Bible, jacket or sweater, fan, and other
personal items. There is no air conditioning in the cottages, however, most rooms now have electric fans.

Study: All participants are invited to join in study on three occasions. These sessions provide a great opportunity to get to
know the clergy and fellow parishioners. This year’s theme is “Christian Friendship.” Please note that Shrine Mont expects
parents to be responsible for the actions of their children, especially during the periods between the three planned sessions.

Update on Issues in the Anglican Communion

This monthly report is part of the Vestry’s ongoing effort to inform
and update the Parish about the ongoing controversies within The
Episcopal Church (TEC) and the Anglican Communion. These
controversies largely involve the blessing of same-sex unions, or-
dination of non-celibate homosexuals, interpretation of Scripture,
and breakdown of traditional boundary lines between Provinces.
The 79th General Convention of The Episcopal Church
will convene in Austin early in July. Among the topics for con-
sideration: The next steps for our church with regard to blessing
of same-sex marriages - Who should have access to same-sex
blessing rites, and how should our prayer book and catechism
define marriage?
Three years ago, the General Convention
authorized use on a trial basis of two litur-
gies for blessing of same-sex marriages, called
“I Will Bless You and You Will Be a Bless-
ing.” (They also presumably could be used by
opposite-sex couples.) Each diocesan bishop
was given authority to decide whether they could be used in
his or her diocese, but bishops were directed to make provision
for all couples asking to be married in the church have access to
these liturgies. Another resolution changed the way our canons
defined marriage to make them gender-neutral.
These actions ultimately led to sanctions, or “consequences,”
as the Archbishop of Canterbury prefers to call them against
The Episcopal Church by the primates of
the Anglican Communion.
That 2015 General Convention also
set up a Task Force on the Study of Mar-
riage to monitor how these trial liturgies
were being used, and report back with
recommendations for the way forward.
The Task Force found that in the in-
tervening three years, bishops in all but
ten of The Episcopal Church’s 101 do-
mestic dioceses have allowed use of the
trial liturgies. Bishops in eight of those ten dioceses have also
prohibited their clergy from using them while officiating in
other dioceses.
After studies, surveys and consultations, the Task Force has
proposed three resolutions for the General Convention to con-
sider.
The first, labeled A085 Trial Use of Marriage Liturgies :
• Extends trial use of the existing liturgies for another three
years, or until the next General Convention in 2021;
• Amends for trial use language in the Book of Common
Prayer’s [BCP] marriage liturgies;
• Outlines how General Convention might make these

changes permanent through additions and revisions to the BCP;
• Proposes changing the catechism in the BCP from de-
scribing Holy Matrimony as “a Christian marriage, in which
two people the woman and man enter into a life-long union
make their vows before God and the Church, and receive the
grace and blessing of God to help them fulfill their vows” to
simply read “two people enter into a life-long union…” A sec-
ond question about marriage would be added to explain canoni-
cal requirements for marriage, including instruction in the pur-
poses of Christian marriage.
• In response to complaints that same-sex couples in those
ten dioceses where the bishop does not allow same-sex blessings
are shut out of the church, the resolution requires all bishops
to “make provision for all couples asking to be married in this
Church to have reasonable and convenient access to these trial
liturgies.”
• Continues existing “conscience clause” language, which
gives every priest discretion “to decline to solemnize or bless
any marriage,” and states that we “continue to honor theological
diversity in regard to matters of human sexuality; and that no
bishop, priest, deacon or lay person should be coerced or penal-
ized in any manner, nor suffer any canonical disabilities, as a
result of his or her theological support for or objection to” what
the General Convention ultimately decides on these issues.
“Trial use” means the church is considering something
for inclusion in The Book of Common Prayer. To be formally
and finally added to the Prayer Book, two successive General
Conventions must authorize the liturgies in identical form. The
resolution explicitly states that adoption by this General Con-
vention may be considered a first of those two votes.
The second proposed resolution, labeled A086 Authorize
Rites to Bless Relationships, proposes adding two new liturgies,
one for those who live somewhere that does not allow same-sex
marriages, and one for those who, for some other reason, can-
not legally be married, such as inability to provide identification
documents required for a civil marriage. [To be married in the
church a couple must also be legally married, thus those who
live where same-sex marriage is not allowed cannot be married
in the church.]
The third proposed resolution, labeled A087 Develop Re-
lationship Pastoral Resources, proposes that the General Con-
vention “acknowledge and minister to the growing number of
persons entering into sexually intimate relationships other than
marriage” [people who chose to live together but not marry] by
developing resources that provide pastoral guidance and teach-
ing on such relationships.
As noted above, as part of its work the Task Force reached

out to other Anglican provinces and churches with which The
Episcopal Church is in full communion, to gauge their response
to these proposed changes.
Responses ranged from “As you continue to wrestle with
hard questions, create life-giving liturgical rites, and welcome
many into the covenant of marriage, we pray for your work
and give thanks for the common bonds we share as siblings in
Christ. We anticipate continued opportunities to learn from one
another as our liturgical expressions continue to live into the
commitments which our denominations have made” (Evangeli-
cal Lutheran Church USA) to The Scottish Episcopal Church
believes that “a single marriage liturgy should be available to
all…This helps to reinforce an understanding that Christian
marriage is marriage without regard to the sex of the couple
– there is no different category of ‘same-sex’ marriage” to “The
Episcopal Church of Sudan does not approve of same-sex mar-
riage because it does not believe that it is the will of God. As
such, the Episcopal Church of Sudan does not approve of trial
rites for same-sex marriage as it has been authorized by The
Episcopal Church of the USA. However, we are thankful to
Task Force for sharing it with us.” to “From now onward be
informed that we are not having any church partnership. Please
do not write me back on this matter.” (Anglican Church of Tan-
zania.)

On the opposite side of the earth, the Anglican Church of
Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia ended years of debate by
voting to allow churches there to bless same sex relationships.
The resolution explicitly states that there will be no change to
“the Church’s teaching that marriage is between a man and a
woman”; but says that individual bishops should be free to use
existing “non-formulary services” to bless same-sex relation-
ships. The resolution also changes church canons to make it
clear priest or bishop would face disciplinary action either for
agreeing to bless such relationships, or for refusing to do so.
The change will not apply in the province’s Diocese of Poly-
nesia – made up of the island nations of Samoa, Tonga and Fiji.
The synod noted the more traditional view of marriage that was
deeply held in those countries.

The Episcopal Church has filed its response to requests that
the U.S. Supreme Court consider church property cases in the
Diocese of South Carolina, potentially
setting a nationwide precedent. “There
is nothing for this Court to review: be-
cause the judgment against [those who
want to separate from The Episcopal
Church] rests on adequate and inde-
pendent state law grounds, [so]no action

of this Court could change the outcome in their favor.”
Last summer, the South Carolina State Supreme Court
ruled that church property in that state belonged to those who
wished to remain with The Episcopal Church, not to those who
wished to leave it. In February the Episcopal Diocese of South
Carolina, which is made of up of churches which voted to leave
The Episcopal Church in 2009, asked the U.S. Supreme Court
to hear the case. Other groups which believe churches or di-
oceses should control their own property, including The Falls
Church Anglican, have filed legal briefs urging the high court
to hear the case.
The Supreme Court has great latitude in deciding which
cases to hear. Its precedents hold that it generally will not con-
sider cases where state courts have based a decision on state laws
or constitutions. The Episcopal Church argues this is exactly
what happened in the South Carolina case. “The adequate and
independent state-law basis for the state court’s decision is read-
ily apparent,” its brief to the high court said. “[South Carolina
State Supreme Court] Chief Justice Beatty, whose vote con-
trolled the result, ‘look[ed] no further than [his] state’s property
and trust laws’ to decide the case.
Attorneys representing the break-away diocese had framed
this as a First Amendment case, and argued the state supreme
court had not found that a trust interest in the property had
been created under South Carolina law. That is “flat out wrong,”
The Episcopal Church countered. The break-away diocese had
framed its arguments in state courts on state law, never raising
a First Amendment claim, and “That failure precludes review in
this [U.S. Supreme] Court.”
The various briefs arguing for and against consideration by
the Supreme Court have been circulated to the justices and their
clerks. The justices are currently scheduled to vote on June 7th
whether to hear the case; four justices must vote in favor in order
for the court to hear it.
Meanwhile, the group that wants to remain with The Epis-
copal Church – and according to the State Supreme Court, the
rightful owner of the properties—has gone into state courts ask-
ing the judgement in their favor be carried out immediately, and
a special master be appointed to resolve any lingering issues.

It is important to remember that despite all these controversies, the work of
the Church - globally, nationally, and locally - goes on. Through youth mission trips,
food donations to LCAC, donations of school supplies and backpacks, the Community
of Hope, and other outreach efforts, Pohick continues to “leak the love of God” to
neighbors in need. As Bp. Shannon told us in June, “The Holy Spirit is as present in
the steady as it is in the remarkable. When we assist those in need, it is the result of
the Holy Spirit’s empathy for a child of God.” And as our Sr. Warden reminded us
recently, “While human lives are limited in duration, the church continues from gen-
eration to generation and age to age…The fruit of our work with homeless children at
Christmas time may be realized 40 years into the future when Pohick’s new rector tells
her parishioners how the love she felt at that 2017 party inspired her to overcome her
poverty, and to be the first in her family to graduate from college then from seminary.”

Short notes
~The St. Cecelia St. Alban Choir will be the choir
leading the service on Youth Sunday, June 2 at 10:00
am, joining a group of Pohick instrumentalists.
~Two trumpeters from the President’s Own, the
Marine Corps Band, will play June 10 for the bishop’s
visit to supplement the organ for hymn singing. We are
fortunate as a congregation to have a longstanding link
to the President’s Own, a connection established by
my predecessor, Victoria Shields, and thank Dr. Susan
Rider and James McClarty for playing here.
~Sightsinging is the ability to sing a piece of print-
ed music with no prior rehearsal of it when provided
only the starting pitch. It is musical literacy and is
hugely helpful to church people who sing hymns each
Sunday as well as to choir members who prepare the
music each Sunday. Watch the bulletin for more in-
formation about the Sundays it will be offered in the
summer. You can do it, if you practice it as a skill. Come
try it out!
~Also this summer Pohick’s musicians will be pre-
paring and presenting special music for summer ser-
vices; be sure to listen for it. We are fortunate to have
so many talented people here!
~Speaking of Pohick’s musicians, THANK YOU,
THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Many people make
music possible here. The music committee members,
Don Brownlee, Jackie Wells, Pam Hogg, and Caro-
lyn Cockroft provide assistance and advice several
times each week. Barbara Lynn directs the St. Francis
Choir; John Sessums and Chris Brown direct the Po-
hick Pickers; and TG Powell directs the Early Church
Music Ensemble. These four individuals contribute a
lot of planning, rehearsal, and music arranging time to
Pohick. Susan McHargue guest conducts, and Caro-
lyn Cockroft is piano accompanist. Choir parents Pam
Hogg and Julie Elston attend rehearsals weekly and
perform a myriad of tasks. Nancy Sage, Jane Thurston
and Isabel Hogg are choir librarians, contributing many
extra hours to organize our music. Amanda Ljuba sets
up the handbells for every rehearsal.
Adult singers meet weekly to sing anthems and ser-
vice music in the Choir of Pohick. Bell ringers practice
weekly to ring handbells in the Bell Choir. Children

and teens rehearse weekly in the St. Cecelia St. Alban
Choir, and their parents give them rides, support and
encouragement. Very young children and their parents
gather weekly to sing in the St. Francis Choir. Instru-
mentalists play in the Pohick Pickers every month and
provide hours of music for our Shrine Mont retreat, the
Country Fair and breakfast with Santa. Adult singers
participate in the Early Church Music Ensemble and
present anthems several times a year. Gloria Jackson
sings a solo the first Sunday of the month at the 11:15
am service. TG Powell and others sing the second Sun-
day of every month at the same service.
Wow! Your loyalty, dedication, and musicianship
are truly important to music for worship here. We
gather to rehearse and to make music in worship and
for the community to the glory of God, grateful to be
able to sing, ring and play his praises.
The largest music making group is the congrega-
tion as a whole. We sing every Sunday at the 9:00 am
and 11:15 am services, at 10:00 am services in the sum-
mer, on Wednesdays in Lent, and at Shrine Mont. You
are really fine singers with a great spirit! Thank you.
