 MIRAMAR AIR SHOW
The Miramar Air Show is an annual air show
The three-day event is the largest military air
show in the United States, with total annual
attendance estimated at 700,000.
It celebrates on 3-5 October, San Diego,CA.
It's famous because LT Pete ‘Maverick’
Mitchell slayed bogeys and blondes in Top
Gun.

Though the station has a military history dating

back to 1846, it became the stuff of legend when
the Navy opened the Top Gun school in 1969 to
train pilots in dog-fighting and fleet air defense. The
Air Show, born thereafter in this tradition of
showmanship and air superiority, was run by the
Navy until 1997; today, MCAS Miramar is home to
the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, and the Marines put
on the spectacle, which has maintained its luster.

At the Miramar Air Show you’ll see the U.S. Navy Blue Angels fly up to 700 mph,
performing vertical rolls at 15,000 feet and sneak passes as low as 50 feet above
the ground. That’s the main event, but there other demonstrations of coordinated
military skill and impressive technology, like the Marine Air-Ground Task Force
show, the vertical takeoff and landing of a Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey, and Maverick
buzzing the tower… Okay, that’s wishful thinking. For aviation enthusiasts or casual
fans, this is festival of choice, and as an added bonus you can spend a few days
exploring San Diego.

 BUMBERSHOOT
Seattle, WA | August 30 – September
1. Three days of music performed by
more than 100 bands. It's a moment to
celebrate the summer that has been
with an eye toward the fall that’s
coming. Seattle has been making sure
summer doesn’t go quietly with the
Bumbershoot Arts and Music Festival.
It wasn’t always called
Bumbershoot.

When Mayor Wes Uhlman pulled the first event together in Seattle Center it was
simply called Festival ’71 and featured wide-ranging attractions from local rock
bands and indoor motorcycle races to a Hot Pants competition that apparently
was a real crowd pleaser.

Since those humble beginnings, Bumbershoot has grown into a premier festival,
regularly attracting huge headliners — Death Cab for Cutie and Fun in 2013. Not
just content to showcase local and national music, Bumbershoot also brings in
comedians and art exhibits for a truly well-rounded send off to summer. Every
year they create a new brochure.

 OUTSIDE LANDS
San Francisco, CA | August 8–10. Let’s get
one thing straight: there are plenty of more
famous — and infamous — summer music
festivals to pick from out there. So why Outside
Lands? Simple: San Francisco. Though the City
by the Bay may now be more café mochas than
Kerouac, the easy-going vibe that has long been
the calling card of SFO still beats steadily every
August in Golden Gate Park.

Outside Lands is one of the few places in this country that you can observe a gaggle of
normcore hipsters, an entire pledge class of sorority sisters, and a young father/son duo all
within five feet of each other, all bouncing to Jurassic 5 (or Vampire Weekend, take your
pick). It’s the only place where corporate swag tents give away neon tank tops and hand
warmers on the same day, because, you know, San Francisco in August. And perhaps
most uniquely, Outside Lands seems to be the only music festival that truly gives a damn
about the festival experience beyond the music.

Aside from Outside Lands, “the music festival”, there’s also Outside Lands “the beer
festival”, (Beer Lands), Outside Lands “the wine festival”, (Wine Lands), and Outside
Lands “the food festival”, (sadly, not Food Lands — the large strips of stalls and trucks
bear no name). Highly unimaginative naming conventions aside, Outside Lands delivers
on all fronts, assembling some of the best regional food, beer and wine in a region that’s
highly touted for its food, beer and wine. This is perhaps the one music festival in the
country that you could go to and enjoy even if you’re not a music fan.

But this doesn’t mean the music is to be missed.

Past top billers include Paul McCartney, Stevie
Wonder, Arcade Fire and Radiohead. The 2014
lineup includes Kanye West, Tom Petty and the
Heartbreakers, The Killers, and various bands
you most certainly don’t know. Yet.
