Social Media

Social media is used in many ways but its main purpose is for communicating with
your friends and family. As everyone uses social media and its popularity is climbing
we thought it would be important to touch-base and provide a little insight and
information you need to know in regards to social media.

What you need to know the basics:

• All social media platforms work hard to guarantee that everyone’s account(s)
are protected. This is done with security settings, additional social media
platform information and online security systems that run constantly to ensure
your security.
• Facebook as well as all other social media platforms provide you with access to
their privacy policies and any other information you need to know about that
platform.
• You have the ability to block someone or anyone from your online profile (s.)
so they cannot search your name let alone view your profile.
There are privacy settings that you are able to access and change in order to
decide who has access to your profile and your profile’s content.
The internet is forever, once you have shared something to the media, it is out
there for whoever can see, to see.
• Be mindful of what you post, if you wouldn’t want your grandma seeing is, it is
appropriate? This is important to keep in mind when posting on social media as
employers and even school teachers check-up on your social profiles as
another way to do a “background check” on who you are.

Privacy

• All social platforms privacy settings are regularly checked to ensure they run
successfully as well is being updated when necessary to also ensure success
and guaranteed privacy.
• You have the ability to customize and change your privacy settings so you have
control over who can view your profile, who can contact you and who can view
your personal information.
• You are in control of your Facebook Privacy.
• You choose who can send you friend requests, who can message/contact you,
who can see your timeline and personal information.

4|Page
• Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and all other social media platforms
are accountable for comprehensive privacy reviews and updates as well as
implementing security testing to their policies.
• You can also update and change your privacy settings whenever you desire.

Internet is forever
You own the information that you share and publish online whether that be on
Facebook or on any other social media platform. Although you are in control of what
you post and remove, once something has been published or shared to the internet it
is out there forever. Although you have the option to remove or delete any shared or
published information you can’t delete or remove it from anyone that has already
seen it, snapshotted it or re-shared it. Internet is forever.

Popular Social Media Platforms:

• Facebook
• Twitter
• Instagram
• Snapchat
• YouTube
• Pinterest
• Tumblr

Personal Finances And Budgeting

Have you ever dreaded going to your letterbox because you don't have the money to
pay the bills you'll receive? Are you struggling to reduce your credit card debt? Are
you sick of never being able to build up your savings enough to go on that trip you
dream of or buy the home you really want?

According to ASIC’s Money Smart Website the way to take control of your finances is
to have a budget. By taking charge of your money, whether you have a little or a lot,
you can ease money stress and feel more secure and in control.

Ways you can do this include:

Track Your Spending

You may think that spending on big things is what gets you into trouble with money.
But often it is the everyday little things that end up costing you more.

It's good to keep track of where your money goes so you don't live beyond your
means. Here are a few things you can do to make sure your spending fits in with your
money plan.

Match your budget with your bank statement

Check your bank statements and look at the money coming into your bank account
and the money going out. Use both your transaction account and credit card
statements to see if your budget truly reflects your spending.

Do a spending diary
Make a note of everything you spend for one pay or at least a week.

Check for spending leaks

Spending leaks are those small regular purchases, like a morning cup of coffee, that
add up over a period of time. If you're trying to save some extra cash, think about
your spending leaks.

ASIC has a free and easy-to-use app for tracking your spending called TrackMySpend.

Download TrackMySpend

20 | P a g e
Budgets
Make your budget realistic. If it isn't, you won't stick to it.

Setting up a budget is the only way to stay on top of your finances by making sure
your money goes where you want it to. It's not about depriving yourself - it's about
being in control.

Work out where your money is going and make it stretch further using the ASIC
budget planner.

Download Budget Planner

Prioritise your debts

Continue to pay at least the minimum repayment on all your debts.

With a clear idea of how much you owe on each debt, and how much money you can
set aside as extra repayments, you need to work out which debts you're going to pay
off first. Depending on how much and what type of debt you have, there could be a
couple of options open to you.

You could start by:

• Paying off the debt with the highest interest rate first; or
• Paying off the smallest debt first (so you feel a sense of achievement).

See how much you'll save by repaying your debts faster.

Use the Credit Card Calculator

21 | P a g e
Start a savings plan
Setting a savings goal for yourself is exciting.

Whatever your goal, once you start a regular savings plan you may surprise yourself
with how much you can achieve once you put your mind to it.

Work out how much you'll need to save each week to reach your goal using the ASIC
savings goal calculator.
Savings Goal Calculator

Then track your savings via the easy-to-use app TrackMyGoals. It allows you to set,
plan, track and manage savings goals and visualise your progress towards achieving
your goals.
