Getting started

Trying the C07/4 for the first time we recommend the following approach:
• Remove all jumpers
• Put in SIM card. Any SIM card can be used (Prepaid or subscribtion). There is no SIM-
Lock.

The demo software will use the SIM-Pin „1357“. (This can be set up with every mobile
phone)

Caution:

When a Pin other than „1357“ is present on the SIM card, the C07/4 emits GSM Flashing
Code 2. After each Power-ON the C07/4 tries, to gain access to the SIM card with Pin
„1357“. If this PIN is invalid, the SIM card permanently denies access after the third
attempt. The SIM card must then be unlocked using the 8 digit PUK (Personal Unblocking
Key).
• Fit the GSM-Antennae (UFL-Plug-in Connector X102) (A GSM/GPRS Module should
never be used without a GSM-Antenna, because during use without an antenna the
dynamic signal strength regulator on modern Mobile Wireless Modules implements
continuous maximum strength transmissions. This transmission energy cannot be
completely radiated and thus remains in the module which overheats unnecessarily.)
• Fit the GPS-Antenna (UFL- Plug-in Connector X600) (Fitting this antenna is
unnecessary when GPS data is not required) CAUTION: GSM and GPS antennas are both
contacted via a UFL plug. Please do not interchange the antenna!)
• Connect Power Supply and Switch On (The optionally available Plug-In Power
Supply or an equivalent mains Power Supply should be used. The connection is achieved
via Pin X2-26 (+9V) and Pin X2-27 (GND) on the reverse of the circuit board.

Caution:

The component group has indeed a short circuit protection (Diode V10), danger of a short
circuit in the power supply however exists during connection of the plug!)

Start up with standard demo

With the standard software „C07/4-Demo“ the component should react as follows after
Power-ON:
• The LED01 (= PWR_ON) illuminates continuously (Power supply is available at the
output of the DC/DC-Converter)
• LED02 to LED05 flash 3-times (These are the four outputs of the micro-controllers
PA4, PA5, PA6 and PA7)
• LED06 (= GPS) flashes (This shows the status of the GPS-receiver)
• LED05 indicates the condition of the GSM module via a flashing code
• LED04 indicates the condition of the GPS module via a flashing code
After checking the PIN stored on the SIM-Card the mobile wireless module TM2Q attempts
to log itself into the GSM network. Depending on reception strength this procedure lasts
approximately 10-20 seconds. The current condition is shown on LED5 (–> Flashing code
GSM). After successful login to the GSM network LED05 will illuminate continuously.
Meanwhile the GPS receiver tries to independently ascertain its position. For this it
requires a signal from 3 GPS satellites. Depending on reception the initial fix from a „Cold
Start“ requires approximately 38 seconds („Cold Start < Open Sky>“). The GPS receiver is
substantially quicker (< 2 seconds) when positional information from previous
measurements is available in areas of good reception. LED06 flashes quickly (5 Hz) when
no positional data is available. When valid GPS data is available LED06 flashes for a short
period. GPS-Data in NMEA format is transmitted serially to interface 1 of the micro-
controller, but can also be read (parallel) from pins X1-10 und X1-11. The micro-controller
transmits Flashing Code 3 via LED04 during the period that no valid data is received from
the GPS receiver. After the receipt of valid GPS positional data LED04 is switched off
permanently.
Standby condition is achieved when,
• LED05 is permanently illuminated (GSM-reception is available, mobile wireless
module GE864-QUAD is registered)
and
• LED04 is permanently illuminated (GPS-reception is available, GPS position has
been determined)

Software AarLogic C07/4

Software activation/deactivation
When delivered the check, test and demo software „CN4-M-Demo“ resides in the flash
memory of the component. After Power-On when JP200 is open, the ATMEGA-162 on
board micro-controller takes control over the component and is responsible for the actions
of the C07/4 described above.
When jumper JP200 is bridged, the micro-controller remains inactive and the mobile
wireless module GE864-QUAD and the GPS receiver can or alternatively must be
controlled externally via the incorporated serial interface(via X1 and X2).

Demo Software Features

The following functions are available with the „C07/4-Demo“ software:

Send GPS coordinates via SMS

When the C07/4 is in standby mode (logged into the GSM Network + GPS reception
available), it can send its current GPS position via SMS. For this there are two possibilities
available:
• When a SMS with the text „?“ is sent to the C07/4, the actual GPS position will be sent
via SMS to the addressee (takes approx 10-20 seconds).
• When the CN4-M is called via a normal voice telephone connection, it also sends the
actual GPS position as a SMS back to the caller – providing of course that transmission
of the callers telephone number has not been suppressed (Mobile Phone configuration).
Format of the Status-SMS:

Send GPS Data to the „Track4Free“ Portal --> JP201 connected

The C07/4 automatically sends the actual GPS position data to the tracking gateway
„Track4Free“ every 2 minutes (www.track4free.com).
The gateway „Track4Free“ enables free tracking for up to two units per Email address. In
order to use this function, you must be registered with the gateway operator, this means
that the IMEI of the participating mobile wireless module is known to the gateway
database (see the sticker on the GE864-QUAD), so that the correct allocation of the GPS
data can be completed and displayed as Track.

On Alarm (Polarity change on IN1 ... IN4) send an SMS --> JP202
connected

4 inputs and 4 outputs are incorporated via the plug-in connector X200. When the Micro-
controller recognises a polarity change on one of the inputs (i. e. via a push-button or an
alarm contact), it transmits a Status SMS to the last known subscriber. This subscriber
may for instance be the caller that last requested a GPS position.

Flashing Codes of the GSM-LED (LED05):

The program „C07/4 Demo“ displays the current state of the GSM area via the GSM LED
and various flashing codes. There is the possibility that a fault exists when a flashing code
is displayed over a longer period of time.
Generally, flashing codes are generated at each POWER-ON and-or GSM Login event. The
following individual steps however will normally run so quickly that individual flashing
codes under normal conditions will not be discernible. ( A PIN setting with flashing code 2
for instance takes only 0.3 seconds.)

Flashin Code Action When Permanent

the complete time of a connection (= during the complete
call)

Flashing Codes on the GPS-LED (LED04):

The program „C07/4-Demo“ shows via the GPS-LED the current condition of the GPS-
receiver. In comparison with the GSM part only two conditions are shown here:

Flashing Code Action When Permanent

3 x flashes No GPS-reception
On stationary GPS-reception OK
LED04 is controlled by the Micro-controller. LED06 however is controlled directly by the
GPS-receiver and also displays both operating conditions (see data sheet „AarLogic GPS
3M“).

Remarks on software development

The above mentioned functions are only demonstration functions. They extol in no way
aspirations of completeness or particular software stability in respect to reactions in cases
of error, time-outs etc.
All allocations of functions to jumpers or LED are made arbitrarily in the demonstration
software and can of course be changed in ones own programs. JP200, JP201 and JP202
for instance lie on „normal“ GPIOs of the Controllers, just as the other inputs IN1 to IN4
and the outputs OUT1 bis OUT4 also.
Further customer specific software features such as elaborate error strategies, filing and
changing parameters in the SIM telephone book or Controller EEPROM, specific adapting
to all types of sensor, determination of credit on pre-paid cards and so on are of course
possible but not implemented in the „Demo“ program.
On the sub-assembly C07/4 two standard interfaces are incorporated for the creation and
testing of your own software:

• The JTAG-Interface: For professional software creation with the help of the In-Circuit-
IDE „AVR-Studio + JTAGProgrammer“ (You will find suitable or respectively hard- and
soft-ware tested with the C07/4 under accessories)
• The ISP-Interface: For transmitting completed programs into the flash memory of the

micro-controller, for instance for assembly (You will find suitable or respectively hard-
and soft-ware tested with the CN4-M under accessories)
Successful development of applications requires ability of reading schematics. The

module and GPS receiver. Uploading of software is done by using the JTAG or ISP
interface. All information needed for development can be found on the schematics.
