Question 3
A rectangular element 1234 defined by the (x, y) coordinates (in metres) (-2, -
1), (2, -1), (2, 1), and (-2, 1) respectively was used in a plane stress finite
element analysis. The following displacements in mm were obtained:
u1 = 0.001 v1 = -0.004
u2 = 0.003 v2 = -0.002
u3 = -0.003 v3 = 0.001
u4 = 0.0 v4 = 0.001

Question 4
A long span suspended floor has been designed for a new commercial
building. The first mode of vibration has been modelled as a single degree of
freedom system with mass “m”, stiffness “k” and damping “c”:
x(t)
k c
(a) Write the equation for motion for the single degree of freedom system. (3 marks)
(b) Show that the undamped natural frequency can be calculated by the
expression below. Assume that the response is simple harmonic motion:

𝑚
(c) Calculate the maximum steady state acceleration of the first mode of the
floor to a continuously running chiller placed at midspan, which generates
a harmonic load of amplitude 20N at a frequency of 10Hz. (4 marks)
(d) Explain if response due the chiller is amplified or attenuated by the first
mode of the floor. Use a graph of dynamic amplification factor versus
tuning ratio to illustrate your answer. (5 marks)
