Ability to analyse and develop solutions to problems

I have the ability to analyse problems and develop solutions. I take a systematic approach to problem
solving and always endeavour to come up with a resolution that is beneficial for the organisation and
stakeholders.

I undertake routine problem solving and troubleshooting activities on a daily basis and have a keen eye
for detail, understanding of how processes work, and how to resolve problems through process analysis
and systematic thinking. For example, if something is being delayed by a bottleneck, I excel in analysing
where the bottleneck is and how to resolve it. I am able to stay focussed on the actual problem without
being sidetracked by other issues and can also take a more creative approach to problem solving.

My problem solving approach includes identifying the problem, defining the problem, prioritising the
problem if more than one exists, conducting an investigation and analysis of the facts, consulting or
requesting advice if necessary, coming up with a solution based on evidence, and making a
recommendation. If I am involved after the recommendation stage (and depending upon the problem) I
will also implement the solution, evaluate the effectiveness of the solution and monitor its progress.

An example of a recent complex problem I have managed is the investigation of an abandonment of

employment issue. It was alleged that a staff member took substantial amounts of annual leave without
approval, which constituted abandonment of employment. My investigation revealed a number of
extenuating circumstances, including serious family health issues for the alleged staff member requiring
overseas travel, the supervisor and deputy supervisor being on leave at the time, and previous
unresolved clashes with this supervisor (who had instigated the disciplinary action). While interviewing
witnesses, I discovered many different versions of events. Managing this issue quickly and effectively
without the need for union intervention was of high importance, and my final recommendation was fair
and equitable for the employee, while conforming to company policy and not compromising the
interests of the Commonwealth. All parties were satisfied with the outcome, and I received a
commendation for my quick action and my dissection of the problem and underlying issues that were
affecting the efficient operation of this work area.

In conclusion, I believe it is my responsibility to understand the culture of the organisation and its
impact on organisational policies and processes. This is essential when providing innovative solutions to
complex problems. I would be able to quickly acquire knowledge of policies and practices within your
organisation.
