Highly developed analytical and conceptual skills – example one

I possess highly developed judgement, initiative, analytical and investigative skills, and the ability to
assess situations to create positive solutions. This includes the proven ability to analyse complex issues
and prepare detailed reports for senior management in my current role as Equity Coordinator.

My role as Equity Coordinator involves the coordination of equity issues within the Department of X
including compulsory equity training for all Department of X staff, the recruitment, training and
supervision of volunteer Equity Advisors, managing equity issues that have been escalated by members
of staff or Equity Advisors, and conducting equity investigations. I use my analytical and conceptual
skills daily in the planning and organising of projects and workloads in my section, advising
management, developing processes and procedures, and coordinating investigation processes.

An example of my analytical and conceptual skills in action is in the investigation of equity issues. I
regularly have multiple investigations running at the same time regarding issues such as discrimination
and harassment in the workplace. Recently I investigated an issue where a female member of staff
alleged harassment from her manager based on her gender. I used a variety of research methods to
assess the situation including interviews with both parties and others in the work area, an analysis of job
descriptions for that work area, examination of previous equity issues in the work area, and scrutiny of
the department’s equity policy. Before making a determination I gathered as much information as
possible, maintained focus on the “big picture”, analysed the relationship between facts, and identified
cause and effect, root problems, and possible solutions.

In all of my investigations I have the ability to diagnose and analyse each situation and develop an
individual solution to meet any needs or issues that arise. In many instances this has required me to
look beyond the present situation and think outside the box in an abstract manner, which I have done
successfully. These skills involve the ability to picture the organisation as a whole and the relationship
between its various parts. All of these examples have also involved the writing of reports, briefs or
policy papers that have followed detailed investigation and analysis.
