EXCERCISE

We have a stream containing 15% ethane, 20% propane, 60% i-butane and 5% n-butane at 50°F and
atmospheric pressure, and a flow rate of 100lbmole/hr. This stream is to be compressed to 50 psia
and then cooled to 32°F. The resulting vapor and liquid are to be separated as the two product
streams. Neglect the pressure drop inside the condenser. Fluid pkg: Peng Robinson. What are the
flow rates and molar compositions of two product streams? Create a case study to see the effect of
changing temperature of the cooler out stream on the molar flow of the liquid product stream, and
write your comment.

Answer

The Problem purpose to separate the heterogen reactant into two phase liquid and Vapour

Simulation needed

- Compressor
- Cooler
- Separator

Data :

- Component are 15% ethane, 20% propane, 60% i-butane and 5% n-butane
- Inlet : Stream 1 with 50°F and 1 atm , and a flow rate of 100lbmole/hr
- Outlet : Stream 2 , be compressed to 50 psia and then cooled to 32°F using Cooler
- Then, Using separsator.
- Case study : Temperature of the cooler and Molar Flow of Liquid

Direction :

- Flow rates and molar compositions of two product streams?

- Create a case study! To know when the molar flow of liquid is zero

Some Steps to finish The Problem

Step 1 :

- Choose Component -> Component List-1

- Add all ethane, propane, i-butane and n-butane
Step 2 :

- Choose Fluid Package -> Basis-1

From property Package Selection , Click Peng-Robinson because the Reactan is gas

Step 3 :

Choose Simulation
Step 4 :

- Double click for Upstream ( )

Step 5:

- Choose Worksheet -> Composition. Add Data :

15% ethane, 20% propane, 60% i-butane and 5% n-butane
Step 6 :

- Choose Conditions . Add Data :

Temperature : 50°F = 10 celcius degree
Pressure : 1 atm = 101,3 kPa
Molar Flow : 100lbmole/hr= 45,36 kgmoe/h

Step 7 :

- Choose Compressor ( ).
- Choose Design -> Connections .
Named Inlet as 1, Energy as q1 and Outlet as 2
Step 8 :

- Choose Worksheet -> Conditions .

- Add Data into Stream 2 ( or second Column ) , Pressure is 50 psia = 344,7 kPa

Step 9 :

- Choose Cooler ( ) -> Design -> Connections

- Named Inlet as 2 , Energy as q2, and outlet as 3
Step 10 :

- Choose Design -> Parameters . Add Data at Delta P : 0,000 kPa

Step 11 :

- Choose Worksheet -> Add Data at ‘Second Column or 3 ’ to 32°F = 0 °C

Step 12 :

- Choose Separator ( ) -> Design

- Named Inlets as 3, Vapor Outlet as Vapor, Liquid Outlet as Liquid

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So We get the result

Double click separator -> Worksheet -> Compositions

We can see variation of compotion in worksheet

CASE STUDY

Use range: from -50 to 50 °C with step size = 5 °C

Step 13 :

- Click on Case Studies button on the Home menu

Step 14 :

- Click Add.
- Choose 3 on the Object column
- Choose Temperature then Click Add

Step 15 :

- Choose Liquid on the Object column

- Choose Molar Flow on Variable Column then Click Add.
- Click Close
Step 16 :

- Add Data
Low Bound = -70 °C
High Bounnd = 70 °C
Step Size = 5°C
- Click Run

The Table Result show at 15 °C, Molar flow of Liquid is Zero
