1 Description

1.1 General Information

The MDO2-LON Diesel Emission Tester is a partial-current turbidity measurement device for the
official emission test for diesel-powered cars and trucks.
Through menu-assisted operator control, the MAHA MDO2-LON opacimeter allows easy testing
and diagnosis of the exhaust emitted from diesel-powered vehicles. The MDO2-LON consists of
at least two components which complement each other:

Š MDO2-LON BASIC UNIT

The basic unit serves to determine the quantity to be measured, that means the blackening
-1
or turbidity of the diesel smoke. The opacity of the diesel smoke is indicated in the unit k [m
] and in [%]. The RPM and the oil temperature can either be measured in the basic unit or in
the hand-terminal. The basic unit is connected to the hand-terminal via a 4-line cable. The
basic unit is to be positioned near the exhaust pipe.

Š HAND-TERMINAL WITH DATA PRINTER

The portable hand-terminal facilitates the operation of the whole system and can be taken
into the vehicle. The operational field consists of a membrane keyboard with maximum
protection against environmental conditions; although it is not recommended to expose the
keyboard and/or the entire hand terminal intentionally to corrosive substances. The
integrated LCD-display of the hand-terminal serves to display the measuring results and
leads the user through the various programs.

1.2 The Measuring Principle

The opacimeter functioning principle rests on the fact that, depending on concentration,
emission exhaust allows less light to penetrate than air would. This principle is put into practice
in the opacimeter; called absorption photometry. The emission exhaust is collected in an
elongated chamber with a transmitter and receiver located at the respective ends.
The transmitter consists of a LED which transmits a wave length of 567 nm. This wave length is
coordinated with the absorption capacity of the emission exhaust. A photo electric cell receives
the impinging light on the opposite side of the chamber.

3 Operation

3.1 Preparations

3.1.1 Connect MDO2-LON

1 Position the basic unit at the location where

it is to be used and connect it to the voltage
supply. Use either the 230 V power supply
cable (B) or the optional cable for the
vehicle’s 12/24 V onboard power voltage
(A).

2 Connect the emission probe (A) to the

emission probe connection on the basic unit
(B) and fasten the emission probe to the
exhaust pipe of the vehicle.

3 If still not done, now connect the hand-

terminal to the basic unit using the special
connection cable.

MDO2-LON V1.02.1.06.GB Operation

3.1.2 Install the RPM Sensor „Piezo Clamp“

If the emission measurement is conducted using an RPM sensor, it must be installed at the
respective location on the engine or its periphery depending on the type and version of sensor.
Then connect the RPM sensor to the hand-terminal.
The standard RPM sensor from MAHA is a piezo clamp. The following RPM sensors are also
available:

Š TDC-sensor Š Clamp W Š Optical pick up

Š Roto-Phon Š Vehicle-specific adapter

When using a piezo clamp pay attention to the following points to prevent damage to the piezo
clamp:

Š Install the piezo clamp near the injection pump or injection valve, as vibrations are damped
best in this area and the piezo clamp does not come into contact with other components.
Š Install the piezo clamp only on a straight part of the fuel pipe line. The piezo clamp will be
damaged if it is attached to a bent piece of pipe.
Š Pay attention that the piezo clamp does not touch other lines which are close to it!
Š Do not turn or push the piezo clamp on the line. (Danger of damage!) Enormous shearing
stress between measurement socket and piezo-quartz can lead to loosening or breaking of
the quartz (grooves on the measurement shell).
Š The piezo clamp will be damaged if a wrong diameter is selected. Piezo clamps are
available in various versions: A 4 mm, 4,5 mm, 6 mm, 6,35 mm, 6,5 mm, 7 mm, 8 mm etc.
Š The piezo clamp will be damaged if the fuel line is painted or dirty.
(cross section is too large, no mass).
Š The piezo clamp will be damaged if it falls onto a hard surface. Even small hair cracks in the
piezo quartz lead to RPM signal misses.

No warranty claims will be accepted with mechanical damage!

3.2 D1 3127BA1-GB02
Operation MDO2-LON V1.02.1.06.GB

INSTALLING THE PIEZO CLAMP:

1 Thoroughly clean a straight part of the fuel pipe line

where the piezo clamp is to be installed (approx. 5
cm) of dirt and paint (use abrasive cloth, grain >150).
2 Install the piezo clamp near the injection pump or
injection valve.
3 Install ground connection to the cleaned fuel pipe
line.

Grounding on the battery or the vehicle body may cause problems!

4 Carefully tighten piezo clamp by hand, i.e. turn piezo

clamp 1/8 to 1/4 screw torque after you feel the first
resistance (=^ 20 - 30 Ncm).

Do not use a tool! Risk of damage!!!

3.1.2.1 Piezo Clamp in Connection with Onboard Voltage Operation

If the diesel-emission tester is connected to the vehicle’s onboard voltage supply (cigarette
lighter or clamping claw) and simultaneously the RPM is determined using a piezo clamp, the
following sequence must be strictly maintained!

1 Connect the MDO2-LON basic unit to the onboard voltage (Battery) .

2 Mount piezo clamp.
3 Do the test as described in the operating manual.
4 First remove the piezo clamp and then discount the voltage supply.

3.1.2.2 Connect Oil Temperature Probe

If an oil temperature probe is available, the engine temperature can be measured using the oil
temperature. The oil temperature can be read from the display on the hand-terminal after the
MDO2-LON is switched on.

1 Set the oil temperature probe to the correct

length. Remove the oil measuring stick and
insert the oil temperature probe.
2 Connect the oil temperature probe to the
hand-terminal.

3.2 Official Emission Measurement Cycle for Emission Inspection

The emission measurement procedure is conducted based on the Irish regulations for emission
testing.

3.2.1 Cleaning Exhaust Strokes (Blow-Out Exhaust Strokes)

Only active if the number of cleaning strokes set in the system variables is not 0. Standard
setting is 0.

Up to 10 cleaning strokes can be conducted before the actual measurements begin. The
number of cleaning strokes can be set in the system-variables. The cleaning exhaust strokes
are not taken into consideration for the test results and serve only to clean or blow out the
exhaust system. There must be an engine rest period of 5 seconds between the gas strokes.
(See Rest Period). After the cleaning blow-out strokes are completed the measurement strokes
are done.

3.2.2 Rest Period

A rest period of 5 seconds is required between the individual exhaust strokes. If the current
RPM is outside the idle RPM limits (measurements with RPM sensor) the engine rest period of
5 seconds is started again. The RPM is displayed as a bar graph with the idle RPM limits. The
max. k-value of the previous exhaust stroke is also displayed. For measurements without RPM
the last max. k-max value is displayed as well as the remaining rest period.

3.2.3 Acceleration Exhaust Strokes (Measurement Exhaust Strokes)

The acceleration measurement is started when the idle RPM is exceeded (for measurements
with RPM sensor) or when the smoke exhaust turbidity increases (for measurements without
RPM).The peak value of the smoke exhaust turbidity, the idle and cut-off RPM and oil
temperature are measured (assuming oil temperature sensor is connected). The measurement
values are automatically stored. After each exhaust stroke the operator is requested to release
the gas pedal. Directly after this the rest period starts. (see Rest Period). If the turbidity climb is
not recognized with measurements without RPM, the measurement can be manually started
with the [ * ] key.

3.2.4 Measurement Categories

There are two different measurement categories available:

Š Category A for CARS Š Category B for TRUCKS

The number of tests that must be conducted depends on the chosen vehicle category. The
standard setting of the MDO2-LON is as follows:

3.6 D1 3127BA1-GB02
Operation MDO2-LON V1.02.1.06.GB

3.2.4.1 Category A for Passenger Cars

The official emission measurement cycle in category A consists of at least 3 and a maximum of
6 individual measurements. The last 3 successive measurements are evaluated. After each
individual measurement there is a cleaning time of 5 seconds while the engine rotates in idle.
The arithmetic mean value is calculated from the last 3 measurement exhaust strokes:

k n − 2 + k n −1 + k n
k mittel = n: number of the last measurement exhaust stroke
3

Š The measurement is completed after 3 individual measurements if each of the individual

measurement values of the first 3 measurements has a k-value d 2.00 m -1.
.
Š If this is not the case, the deviations from the mean value are checked for 75 %. The
arithmetic mean k-mean is calculated from the last 3 exhaust strokes. If all 3
k-values from which the mean value was calculated are not smaller than 75% of the k-mean,
then the acceleration measurement is completed. Otherwise the acceleration measurement
is continued.
Š After the 6th exhaust stroke is done, the acceleration measurement is completed. The
arithmetic mean value is calculated from the last 3 exhaust strokes. It is checked whether the
last 3 k values from which the mean value was calculated were not smaller than 75% of k-
mean. If one or two k-values are smaller than 75% of the k-mean with the last 3 exhaust
strokes, these k-values are ignored. A new arithmetic mean value k-mean is calculated from
the remaining valid k-values.

3.2.4.2 Category B for Trucks

The official emission measurement cycle in category B consists of at least 4 and maximum of 10
individual measurements. The last 4 successive measurements are evaluated. After each
individual measurement there is a cleaning time of 5 seconds while the engine rotates in idle.
The arithmetic mean value is calculated from the last 4 measurement exhaust strokes:

k n − 3 + k n − 2 + k n −1 + k n
k mittel = n: number of the last measurement exhaust stroke
4

Š The measurement is completed after 4 individual measurements if each of the individual

measurement values of the first 4 measurements has a k-value d 2.00 m -1.
.
Š If this is not the case, the deviations from the mean value are checked for 75 %. The
arithmetic mean k-mean is calculated from the last 4 exhaust strokes. If all 4
k-values from which the mean value was calculated are not smaller than 75% of the k-mean,
then the acceleration measurement is completed. Otherwise the acceleration measurement
is continued.
Š After the 10th exhaust stroke is done, the acceleration measurement is completed. The
arithmetic mean value is calculated from the last 4 exhaust strokes. It is checked whether the
last 4 k- values from which the mean value was calculated were not smaller than 75% of k-
mean. If two or three k-values are smaller than 75% of the k-mean with the last 4 exhaust
strokes, these k-values are ignored. A new arithmetic mean value k-mean is calculated from
the remaining valid k-values.

MDO2-LON V1.02.1.06.GB Operation

3.2.5 Measurement of the Zero-Point Drift

At the end of the exhaust measurement the device conducts a zero point adjustment. If the
-1
permissable zero point drift of 0.20 m is exceeded (e.g. due to dirty optics), a corresponding
error message appears after the completed measurement and the total measurement is invalid.
-1
If the offset drift is smaller than 0.20 m , this value is deducted from the mean value after the
max. permissable number of measurements has been done.

3.2.6 Evaluation of the Test

After the acceleration measurement is completed, the test is evaluated.
-1
If the k-mean is not larger than the target value k-max (with Turbo 3.00 m , without Turbo 2.50
-1
m ), the test is evaluated as „passed“ , otherwise it has failed.

The filter disc must be clean and free of dust before it is used for checking the linearity. In case
of doubt, always clean the filter disc with a clean, fluff-free cloth! It is very important that the
black plastic covers which protect the optics are properly placed when checking the calibration!

All CRC16 checksums of the digital interface transmission protocol will be calculated with the
calculation program. Moreover separate checksums corresponding to each calibration channel
(current and maximum turbidity, current and maximum k-value, date) will be transmitted in the
protocol. A measuring value will only be adopted if the CRC16 checksum of the calibration
channel is identical with the measuring value of the calibration channel. If this is not the case,
“---“ appears on the display as calibration channel.

The HDLC-polynomial for the calculation of the CRC16-CCITT-checksum is:

CRC16 (X) = X^16 + X^12 + X^5 + 1
The start value is FFFFH.
Example: the CRC16-checksum of 1234 is 40376.

5.2 Problems with Piezo Clamp

Should there be problems with the piezo clamp go through the following checklist:

Š Is the piezo clamp well tightened?

Š Does the ground line short circuit? This is caused e.g. by contact with other injection line ,
among other things.
Š Is the piezo clamp attached to the pipe bend?
Š Is the ground line of the piezo clamp connected with the vehicle mass?
Š Does the line piece oscillate? The reason for this may be a long injection.
Š Is there dirt on the fuel line on which the piezo clamp is attached?
Š Does the piezo clamp being used have the right size for the fuel line cross-cut?
Š Has the piezo clamp been damaged by unskilled attachment (e.g. by turning it on the fuel
line, letting it fall, etc.? A hairline crack could be in the piezo clamp ceramic.

The correct connecting of the piezo clamp is described in Chapter 3, paragraph 3.1.2

5.3 Equipment does not heat up

The optical temperature display does not move forward, i.e. the
equipment is not heating up.
("0" 4)1gg

No error code is issued when the heating is defective. Only the display message appears.

1 Switch off the basic unit.

2 Switch on the basic unit again.
3 If the same error occurs again, the heating itself or the sensor is defective and the unit must
be completely exchanged. In this case, contact the customer service representative in your
area.

5.4 Error Symbols on the Display
