Template for Taking Notes on Research Articles

Whenever you read an article, pertinent book chapter, or research on the web, use the following format (or
something similar) to make an electronic record of your notes for later easy access. Put quotation marks around
any exact wording you write down so that you can avoid accidental plagiarism when you later cite the article.

Hypothesis: Many of the AI milestones were forecast to be achieved in the next decade, providing ground-truth
evidence about the reliability of individual experts.

Methodology: Their survey population was 352 researchers who published at the 2015 NIPS and ICML
conferences. Their questions about specific AI capabilities, superiority over humans at all tasks, and the social
ethical impacts of AI.

Result(s): First result for figure 1; when for any occupation, machines could be built to carry out the task better
and more cheaply than human workers. The mean of the individual beliefs assingned a 50% probability in 122
years from now and a 10% probablitiy in 20 years. Second result for figure 2; (milestones >24) each
respondents expected 20 of the 32 AI milestones to be reached within ten years. Third result; HLMI is seen as
likely to have positive outcomes but catastrophic risks are possible. Fourth result; respondents think that
research on minimizing the risks of AI should be prioritized by society more than the status quo(with only 12%
wishing for les).

Summary of key points: Researchers believe the field of machine learning has accelerated in recent years.
Explosive process in AI after HLMI is seen possible but improbable. HLMI is seen likely t have positive or
negative impact on humanity over the long run. Society should prioritize research aimed at minimizing the
potential risks of AI.
