disrespectful behaviour for all our people, including artists, volunteers and administrative staff.

We define disrespectful behavior as, but not limited to: harassment (including sexual harassment),
bullying and discrimination.

We do not tolerate conduct intended to undermine the dignity or self-esteem of an individual, or

which creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment.

We will take prompt action to address disrespectful behavior and allegations of disrespectful behavior,
and support those who may have experienced or witnessed harassment.

We want all our people to know that they are safe to speak up about disrespectful behavior and they
will be heard.

▪ politeness (courteous and considerate behavior toward others)

▪ inclusivity of people with different backgrounds, cultures, strengths and opinions

▪ Bullying, including, but not limited to:
- abusive behaviour
- unjustified criticism
- shunning behaviours (ganging up, exclusion)

Process

All people associated with ASP are expected to behave in a respectful manner in all their interactions
while interacting with, about and for ASP events and activities.

If anyone believes a breach of this policy has occurred, they are encouraged to speak up. All people will
be treated fairly, including those who experience, witness, report and are accused of disrespectful
behaviour.

▪ If you experience or witness disrespectful behaviour:

o Be proactive and try to resolve the problem directly with the person with whom you have a
concern, if possible
o Assume that the other person was not behaving disrespectfully on purpose
o Approach the person who made you feel uncomfortable, explain how it affected you and
ask that person to stop
o Do this calmly, respectfully and discreetly (often individuals are unaware that their
behaviour is deemed disrespectful and most will change their behaviour once they are
made aware of the problem)
▪ If a person approaches you about your own behavior:
o Listen carefully and respectfully
o Pause before responding if you are feeling emotional
o Be curious and ask questions rather than make assumptions
o Keep in mind that honest, direct discussion will often lead to a resolution
▪ If you have attempted to resolve the problem without success or are not comfortable addressing
the problem on your own:
o As soon as possible, discuss the situation with an ASP individual who is higher in the
organizational structure than the person of concern
▪ Stage manager < Director < Producer < Artistic Director < Executive Director < Board
Chair < alternate Board Member (if necessary)
o Provide as much detail as possible
▪ Include the identity of people involved (including witnesses)
▪ Make notes of the incident, including as much detail and context as possible
▪ When an incident is reported, the person receiving the report will bring the issue forward to the
Executive Director (or other if required) for prompt action, investigation and remediation
▪ Once the report is made, all parties are expected to refrain from discussing the situation with
others. To do so constitutes gossip, which is disrespectful and a breach of this policy
