Minutes: The minutes from September 2016 were voted on and approved

Student member report: Alex Manceuski reported on his efforts. He’s recruiting students to help spread
public health information. One potential pool of recruits he is attempting to contact are the students
who have attended the Dell Children’s Summer Volunteer Program. He’s also working on an April
showcase of health related science fair projects at Dell.

Review of draft of SHAC Board Report: Kathy Green is presenting the annual report to the Board at the
Board Work session on Monday, October 10th. There was review and general discussion of the draft.

Board Report: AISD Board Member Julie Cowan reported on progress of SHAC recess policy
recommendations. Lisa Goodnow provided supporting information to fill SHAC in on where things stand.
There will be a change in the policy recommendation to the Board that recess be at least 20 minutes
(reduced from the 30 minute minimum recommended by the SHAC) and that recess is to be protected
from being withheld as punishment, used as homework make up or tutoring or testing time. 60% of
elementary schools currently meet these policy standards, and the plan is for them to be in the Master
Schedule in January. There was discussion regarding the placement as a Board Regulation, not a Board
Policy. The Board is expected to vote on the policy recommendation October 24th.

Julie Cowan also reported on a presentation from Nicole Conley on shift to zero based budgeting to
analyze departmental budgets.

District Reports:

Food Service: Anneliese Tanner reported that currently AISD is serving 74337 meals/day, which is 1861
more than last year. 78 campuses have free breakfast. There is a slight drop from last year so they are
reviewing to find out why and troubleshoot campus by campus (i.e., did campus lunch procedures
change, etc.) Salad bars continue to be added to schools and are proving very popular (at Manchaca 50%
of students take salad when it’s offered). Houston and Pillow were awarded a grant to provide more
breakfasts in the classroom. National School Lunch Week is coming and the Vietnamese food truck will
roll out at Anderson High School. Sanchez Elementary is getting their salad bar and there will be a
celebration in partnership with Whole Kids. For Take your Parent to lunch day the menu will include
vegan lentil frito pie. All the menu changes have required more staff support and training to handle the
increased amount of scratch cooking.

>>> AISD Nutrition Services has been named the #! School lunch program to watch

>>> AISD Nutrition Services director is being honored by Whole Foods for her work on behalf of our
children
Student Health Services: Sally Freeman reported staff is working hard to update all immunization
records in advance of the “Snapshot Date” at the end of October. There are education efforts underway
to help stop the spread of flu. Staff development day on Monday will have speakers on subjects
including topics such as Concussion and Return to School, and Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis.

>>> Sally Freeman is receiving Texas School Nurse Administrator award from the Texas Association of
School Nurses.

Discussion about infection and attendance requirements, discussion regarding current AISD lice policy

Employee Wellness: Melody Carlton reported on current structure of Employee Wellness programs
under the HR department. She is focusing on employee education, and getting preventive services to
come on site (flu shots on campuses, mobile mammograms). She is encouraging cross departmental
wellness collaboration.
