Magazine Unit 14

LO1//
Ideas;
Recycling/ Packaging, my first idea is a magazine promoting the use of recycled
packaging within different industries, and the use of biodegradable materials
etc in the production and manufacture of a wide range of goods, the audience
would be a niche of socially and environmentally oriented young adults aged 20
- 40, as well as businesses looking at more eco friendly production techniques,
therefore it is aimed at demographic groups A/B and E, not because of income
but based on age and social status and how environmentally concerned they are
likely to be. The aim of this magazine will be to educate, and inform readers
about social and environmental issues and promote sustainability.Similar
magazines include ‘Sublime’, an international, sustainable lifestyle magazine.
It is a bimonthly print publication aimed at making sustainability appealing,
it covers topics such as nature, fashion, technology, architecture etc. There
is a strong emphasis on community, fairtrade and natural/ organic products.
"Sublime hopes that companies will put their money where their socially
responsible mouths are." My main concern with this is identifying a specific
topic that i could easily research and take primary source images for

Music - An indie/ alternative music magazine specifically oriented around

Allday. The main article an article about upcoming Australian rapper Tom Gaynor
and the indie music scene. Similar magazines include NME magazine however it
has been recently discontinued. The target audience for this magazine will be
teenagers and young adults aged 16- 25, although it's more of a niche it will
aim to raise awareness of up and coming musicians and eventually become more
popular within a mainstream audience. The main demographic groups the magazine
will target would be D and E as these are they typical groups students and
young adults/ teenagers fall into.

Beekeeping - an article on efforts being made to ‘save the bees’ and raising
awareness about declining bee populations, it will include simple tips on how
to promote the growth of bee populations and inform the audience as to current
legislation that is being implemented to help. This environment magazine will
also be aimed at young adults with environmental and ethical concerns, again i
want to target the lower demographic group however i also hope the magazine and
is content will appeal to group B as these professionals are the most likely to
have an interest in this area.

LO2// Recce
Parsons Close, Pinfold Lane, Beesby, Alford, LN13 0JG.

Saturday 28th April - 2- 4pm

This property is owned by Guy and Louise Willey, the beehives are kept in the
back corner of the field an i believe this is a good location that i can easily
access and get my source photos from. I will take photos of the hives and the
inside of them and the frames, i will also be able to photograph equipment.
This location has many advantages; primarily its ease of access, the only
disadvantage is its very weather dependent but that would be the same in any
location as it's a weather sensitive subject.
LO2// Legal and ethical issues
Legal and ethical issues can range from copyright of images and articles,
intellectual property and the use of offensive material. The IPSO is partially
responsible for regulating print based media, however it is primarily self
regulated, usually by an editor that checks all the articles before the
magazine is published, this can be risky as print based media can be published
before it is deemed inappropriate, there are also issues surrounding privacy
and what can be published, this comes as a result of gossip magazines wanting
to increase sales by printing controversial stories.
Legal
With my magazine the main issues i have will be misleading readers and issues
surrounding the accuracy of my information, i will have to use reliable sources
to ensure my article is factual and up to date and check for consistency across
multiple sources, in addition to this i will have to source my own information
and ensure the article is completely my own work to prevent any copyright
infringements, whilst also ensuring accuracy. Similarly i will need to ensure
i source and take my own images in order to prevent any copyright issues
occurring regarding the use of images in my work, this is the same as with the
text.
From an ethical point of view i need to be cautious when taking the photos to
prevent agitating or disturbing the bees and to limit risk to them, myself and
the beekeeper. The final issue is that i need to ensure my article is
informative without seeming condescending or intimidating to the audience as
this may discourage people from reading the magazine.

Risk Assessment//
The main risk associated with photographing bees is aggravating them and the
chances of being stung, to reduce this risk you should ensure you are covered
completely, wearing long sleeve clothing and gloves etc, you should also wear
appropriate headwear making a special effort to cover your face and neck as
these are the most common areas to get stung, and if they start getting
aggressive you should retreat to an indoor closed area and walk away calmly to
avoid inducing anymore stress.
Another potential risk may be smoke inhalation from the smoker (a piece of
equipment that releases smoke to calm the bees by making them drowsy and easier
to handle)
Equipment damage is also another potential hazard
