BYU-Idaho Preschool Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan #21

Lab 2
Mail

Date: Friday, June 22, 2018

Supervisor: Madi Thomas
Lead Teacher: Lauren Smith 4th Lesson

Children Receiving Specific Focus Today:

1. Peter Knox
2. Cody-see blocks
3. Lakota
4. Jaessa
5. Truman
6. Alice

Preassessment and Findings:

In lab for the last few weeks I have noticed that Zoey, Kyler, Alice, and Lakota enjoy writing
letters and that they use the envelopes provided. I asked Zoey who she was writing a letter for
and she said Alice. I asked Alice who she was writing a letter for and she said her grandma. I
asked her how her letter would get to her grandma and Alice said her mom would put it in the
mailbox. I asked Kyler who his letter was for and he said his mom. I asked him if he needed to
mail it to her and he said that he would just give it to her at home. I asked if he had mailed a
letter before and he said yes. I asked him where our letters go and he said they go to the
mailman who takes them to the places they need to go. Lakota told me his letter was for his
brother. He told me that mail goes to the mailbox outside.
I asked Taryn where our mail or letters go and she said the letters fly across the sky. I asked
Hayden where the mail goes and he said to the mailbox and into the mailman’s truck to his
grandmas. Hayden said he writes lots of letters to his grandma. John Curtis told me letters go far
away. Olive said that sometimes she sees the mailman outside her house and that he takes the
letters they send.
Based upon pre-assessment I think that during my lesson it will be important to teach the process
that mail goes through before it is delivered. It will also be important to teach about a post office
and how a post office sorts mail. We will have activities that will implement literacy, prompting
the children to write their names or write the name of the person the letter is to. Children will also
identify that a letter needs an address on it and a stamp. I think that through incorporating the
mail and literacy both interests and developmental needs can be met for the children.

Ideas to be Emphasized and Overall Developmental Focus:

1. The post office collects and delivers letters.
2. Our letters can get to friends and family even when they live far away.
3. We put the address and names on the letters of those we are sending them to.
