Academic Research/Guidelines & Topics

Name:
Gr.12 ___ Unit: 1, 2, & 3 Lesson: Academic Research Date:
CCSS W.11-12.7 Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question, or solve a problem;
synthesize multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation. W.11-12.8 Gather
relevant information from multiple authoritative print and digital sources, using advanced searches effectively; assess the
strengths and limitations of each source in terms of the task, purpose, and audience; integrate information into the text selectively
to maintain the flow of ideas, avoiding plagiarism and overreliance on any one source and following a standard format for
citation.W.11-12.8 Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research

Choose one of the topics listed below todo research of 2000-2500 words. Your research
MUST be solely done by you. Plagiarized work will receive a zero. Do NOT allow anybody to
check your work because your teacher needs to spot your language weaknesses and strengths
inorder to devise future teaching and intervention plans. Remember thatyour teacher will
appreciate your English and reward you for your language no matter what it looks like. This
work is meant to prepare you for research-based university study. You may use direct quotations,
but they must not be more than three and not longer than three lines each.
For the purpose of validating your findings, you need to do triangulation of data. This
means that you need to vary your sources. Therefore, you need to refer to authentic literature
and conduct surveys and interviews. The combination of data that you obtain from all these
sources will prove your points authentic and accurate. Your teacher will inform you soon how to
manage this process.

You may include relevant diagrams, tables and charts to enhance your research. These
supporting figures must be included in the research discussion, not at the end of the research
paper, and you must refer to them in the body of your research. You must use the APA citation
(in-text citation and at the end of the research) style, which you can do through the Word
software options on your computer.

You need to submit a research proposal and an annotated bibliography to your teacher no
later than Monday, November 20th, 2017, as per your teacher’s instructions. The research is due
on Monday, February 19th, 2018, and it is worth 20 marks. However, if you submit it before this
date, you will gain two bonus marks. If you choose to submit it later than that day (I hope you
bring it earlier), you will lose two marks for each school day of delay, but your research will be
accepted. However, no research will be accepted after February 22nd, 2018. Therefore, you are
advised to start working on your research early.

Your final research paper must contain the following pages (in order):

1. A cover page (to be provided by your teacher) that contains your name, section, date,
topic title and relevant CCSS
2. A table of contents (immediately under the cover page and made through Microsoft Word
software) that lists the contents of your research according to page numbers

3. An abstract, or an executive summary of the main points discussed in the research
4. The research results: introduction, body, conclusion, and appendixes (interview(s) &
survey(s))
5. A final page for bibliography: references and citation. Please note that only correct in-
text and end of research citation will be accepted. Including the links only is not
enough.

WARNING: If you fail to include enough in-text citations and references, your research is
going to be rejected.

Follow the guidelines below to write your research essay:

1. Use APA essay format (introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion)

2. Use Times New Roman, font size 12, double space, for all the paper, except the cover
page.
3. Use titles and subtitles numbered in a multilevel style generated by Microsoft Word, with
Roman numerals (I, II, III, IV, V, X, etc.) being the main level.
4. Refer to each table, diagram and chart you use in the research. You must also add a
number and a caption for each visual you use. Do not change the proportional sizes of
the visuals used.
5. Number the pages of the research.

Since you are over 100 students in 12th Grade, no more than ten students are allowed to choose
the same topic. To avoid clash, you must inform your English teacher of your topic choice as
soon as possible so that he can make it clear to all which topics have been reserved. You are not
allowed to start doing research on a topic before informing your teacher and obtaining his
approval, and your research will be rejected if you fail to do so.

Are you going to follow the research ethics explained above?
